Why marijuana should be legalized
Marijuana should be legalized for many different reasons. One reason is that legal drugs such as tobacco and alcohol are far more dangerous in comparison to cannabis. A second reason explains how prohibition is an utter failure and the war on drugs has done more harm to our country than good. A third reason explains how having marijuana illegal in the United States makes billions for Mexico's drug cartels and other underground criminal organizations that grow the marijuana. Marijuana also has hundreds of medical benefits that date back to 2700 BC. Lastly, the United States spends so much of our tax dollars on keeping marijuana illegal when the country could gain trillions if it were legalized, taxed, and regulated.
Marijuana should be legal because prohibition doesn't help the country in any way, plus, it causes a lot of problems. There is no scientific evidence that suggests prohibition decreases drug use, but there are several theories that suggest prohibition might actually increase drug use. One effect of marijuana prohibition is that it makes the drug available to minors. Marijuana dealers usually don't care how old a buyer is, as long as they have the money. It is actually easier for high school students to obtain marijuana than it is alcohol; this is because alcohol is legal and therefore regulated to keep it away from teenagers. If marijuana were legal to people above the age of twenty-one like alcohol, then it would be harder for teenagers to obtain it. Prohibition is not working and I believe that education and treatment are better ways to address the drug problem.
The two most deadly drugs in America are legal. Marijuana should be legalized because it is safer than alcohol and tobacco both. Marijuana is not a dangerous drug and has never killed anybody. Alcohol and tobacco accumulate over 675,000 American deaths each year. Over the counter drugs and aspirin kill over 35,000 Americans each year. Alcohol and cigarettes are highly addictive and can cause an endless amount of health problems. Alcohol alone can cause gastritis, pancreatitis, ulcers, liver cancer, cirrhosis, and other liver diseases. Tobacco contains at least nineteen different types of
Many people from all around the world believe that marijuana is an addictive drug that has ruined the lives of millions. The U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that more than 37,000 annual U.S deaths are the effects of alcohol alone. Alternatively, there is not even a category for the deaths caused by marijuana. Many of us think that marijuana kills brain cells but studies show teens that use marijuana as well as alcohol suffered significantly less damage to the white blood cells in their brains. Alcohol use contributes to aggressive and violent behavior while marijuana will only make a person feel more comfortable. “Alcohol is clearly the drug with the most evidence to support a direct intoxication, violent relationships, whereas cannabis reduces the likelihood of violence during intoxications” (Shuette, 2013). The government does not even track violent acts specifically related to marijuana use. Marijuana and alcohol should be switched where marijuana is legal and alcohol is not because it will benefit people more than alcohol will.
In conclusion, marijuana should be legalized because there are potential benefits such as making the substance less accessible to minors, increase taxation revenues, and lowering criminal activity, as long as the price is competitive with illegal
Ending the drug war may not seem to be the best answer at first, but
Marijuana should be legal because it has several medicinal benefits, does not cause as much harm as alcohol or tobacco, and has been used by several dignitaries. The origins of marijuana date clear back to before recorded history, but the earliest written mention of it was in 1500 B.C. in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, titled the Rh-Ya. Emperor Fu also appears to have mentioned it in 2900 B.C., claiming that cannabis was a very popular medicine that possessed both ying and yang. It’s also mentioned several more times throughout history including usage in the Book of Exodus, Bhang (an Indian drink made of cannabis and milk), and possibly even in Bible. It was medically referenced in several places including Ancient Greece, Egypt, and China. Marijuana was made illegal essentially in 1937 by the Marijuana Tax Act. There are a few considerable reasons That it should be re-legalized, however.
In 1545, the Spanish brought marijuana to the New World. It was introduced in Jamestown in 1611, where it became a major commercial crop grown as an innocent source of fiber (specifically, hemp). By 1927, the production and possession of marijuana had been outlawed throughout the United States, causing a prohibition that is still in effect 80 years later. Since then, the world has seen the violent rise of drug cartels and the high price of fighting illegal marijuana use (Narconon). Marijuana should be legalized because significant research shows that legalization will benefit our society socially and economically.
The legalization of marijuana is a very debatable subject, some people think it is bad and should be illegal, and some people think it is good in some ways if used properly. It should be legal because it has few negative effects, it serves other purposes than getting people stoned, and it is better than other drugs.
Marijuana has many advantages and disadvantages attached to it. There will be an almost, never ending debate on whether or not marijuana should be legalized. Due to the good that it would cause; the medical benefits and the money that would come from it by taxing it, and the money we would save from trying to fight it. We could have a larger budget for more important things that are in need tat the moment, if marijuana were legalized there would have to be regulations on it, much like those of alcohol, This would make it safe for freedom of use.
Marijuana should be legal in America because it has been used for centuries and is relatively safe. Paul Armentano states “Marijuana has been cultivated and used by human beings for thousands of years as a medicine, as a drug, as a fiber, and as food.” Knowing that our ancestors have been using marijuana for thousands of years, I believe that the consumption or marijuana isn't as bad as others claim it to be. Since marijuana has been circulating through our society for this long I believe it’s safe.
Marijuana should not be legal the United States is the other side of this argument. The people who support the legalization of marijuana, the policies in the united states are working well and have helped to reduce the amount of marijuana use and transport in the United States(Reuters).
I believe that marijuana should be legalized. My three reasons are that it can be used for medical purposes, it can get rid of crime related to marijuana, and it’s better than alcohol. I believe that these three reasons are enough to get marijuana legalized.
Marijuana is believe it or not, one of the safest ‘illegal’ drugs on Earth. It is safer than legal alternatives: alcohol or tobacco. According to CNN “1 in 8 Americans smoke marijuana on a regular basis.” the drug can provide medical benefits, lower social costs, and better the economy. Therefore Marijuana should be deemed legal for recreational and medicinal usage across America, because it provides medical benefits, lowers social cost, and betters the economy across the board.
If marijuana were legal, it would also bring a significant source of revenue to the United States. A lot of money currently is spent on drugs, and most of it goes to illegal operators outside of the country. If legalized, the pot revenue would go to Americans. In the current economic climate, this would definitely be welcome. A tax could also be put on the drug, and the companies that grew and possessed the plants would have to pay income taxes to the government. It is possible for marijuana to become one of the number one cash crops in though whole country. And with all the people who would smoke it, or use it in other ways, it could quickly become one of the main stimulators in our economy.
Cannabis should be legal because it is a victimless crime. It is not the governments role to dictate what their citizens can or cannot put into their bodies. Cannabis is a safe way for someone to relieve stress after a long day. It also has many medicinal benefits that fight many diseases, including cancer, PTSD, Parkinsons, and more.

There has been many debates about marijuana and whether or not to legalize it throughout the United States and few states have actually legalized marijuana. Marijuana should not be legal because it is harmful to people. By legalizing the marijuana, it sends children the message that using marijuana is okay, it is available to a wider amount of people, and it harms more people. The harmful effects of marijuana outweigh the good effects of marijuana by far.
