One reason why the sports budget should not be increased is because of health issues. One of the largest concerns for parents of teen athletes is injuries. One of the leading sports injuries are concussions. Concussions are caused by one large hit to the head which causes symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and light sensitivity. If not treated, it can lead to brain damage. While studies do show that concussions have risen from “7,000 to 22,000” (Notebook) reported cases a year. With the budget increase we can hire personal trainers to help with stretching and sports injuries. Then we can prevent injuries all together. With safer equipment, together as a school can make our athletics safer and better. A second reason to why I believe the sports
Football is game of speed, strength, and strategy. The best way to be a better player is working on becoming bigger and stronger while maintaining the speed, but when the players mass, strength, and speed all get better the forces the can produce a greater force with their hits. According to Timothy Gay, Physics professor at the University of Nebraska and author of The Physics of Football, a Defensive Back at the average one-hundred and ninety pounds that runs a 4.56 forty-yard dash can produce sixteen-hundred pounds of tackling force, which easily can break any bone of the human body. Due to the extreme forces the players are exposed to, it is necessary for each player to wear pads that help reduce and spread out the forces, and helmets
I want to write a research paper on concussions in football for these three preeminent reasons: it will further my knowledge on the topic, help me understand concussions from both a scientific and football player’s perspective, and allow me to learn about something I encounter everyday and can use to prevent possible future injuries. Currently, I coach football at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and I want to know more about concussions and their implications so I can spot them, prevent them, and help players overcome them.
In 2013, According to NFLpbs.org at least one hundred and fifty-two concussions have been brought into the NFL. Most likely the wide receivers will get the most concussions, because of the defensive linebackers and the safety’s. Well everyone on the defense is trying to tear the offense head off without the proper form tackling. Even a smaller defender can tackle someone bigger than themselves because of the proper form tackling. Due to the fact of concussions, tackling requires proper positioning, closing the distance and watching the hips to execute correctly.
Concussions are they bad? Concussions are bad for you to receive but not as bad as other brain injuries, from my experience coming home from just playing in a football game I was hit by another car going 60mph to the driver side. I sustained a brain bleed which is worse than a concussion, but I can tell you what a concussion is like having to go through all of the therapy/ recovery. Concussions are one of the most world's leading injury. Concussions are fairly common every 21 seconds it's estimated that there is someone with new trauma to the brain in the U.S.
Concussions are a problem that nearly all athletes competing in a contact sport will go through. Whether it be boxers, hockey players, skateboarders, or football players, most can usually recognize a concussion. Some say they “See Lights,” or “Hear Ringing,” with over 3000,000 concussions happening in football yearly, concussions can also occur in sports such as gymnastics, cycling, and even martial arts. A concussion by definition is a traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to one’s head by either a fall, bump, or other injury that results in the shaking of the brain within the skull. It is important to understand what a concussion is, so you can prevent possible long term affects to one’s cognitive
Athletes should have to sit out longer due to head injuries because sometimes they can have memory lost due to concussions, about 300,000 kids have concussions every year, and the concussions are long lasting. There are so many contact sports now and some peoples life's are on the line sometimes. They could also become paralyzed depending on how hard they are hit and where they are hit. It's not just concussions it's broken bones and hurting yourself.
In the sports world today, there are many different injuries that athletes experience and one of the most devastating injury is a concussion. Concussions can happen to anyone, in any sport, but we tend to see most concussions in contact sports (Świerzewski 1). While having an informal conversation with my dad about football, he told me it was common for athletes to receive a head injury in a game and continue to play as if nothing was wrong. While watching SportsCenter, I found that some of the greatest retired athletes don’t remember the best moments of their careers due to the lack of treatment. The worst aspect of concussions is that the symptoms can be delayed; in some cases, it’s only a headache so athletes don’t seek medical treatment. Multiple concussions over time can lead to life-threatening complications due to the damage they cause to the brain. Concussions can happen to anybody at anytime, but there is more to concussions than meets the eye.
For the issue that I thought would be surprising to me is the issue about concussions and how the coaches had very little knowledge of the symptoms of concussions. I thought coaches would have a broader understanding on concussions and what to look for. But according to this article that there was a lack of concussion management. What also surprised me is that the coaches weren’t consist when it comes to identifying and managing concussions. Which I thought as a football coach you would want to know more about concussions so that you can prevent them and identify them to protect your players specially in football. There was also a lack of education about concussions in smaller schools which made it harder for coaches to identify concussions.
How many people believe what they hear and see on television or the internet? It is astounding to believe that some members of the population will believe anything that is reported in the media without any scientific research or backing. With the popularity of the National Football League, it is easy to believe that any information given by ESPN or other sports broadcasting stations are providing accurate information. However, more scientific studies and research should be provided to fans based on the health of the players. Ever since the death of former National Football League star Junior Seau, which was caused by a concussion, there have been multiple reports to come out about the causes and effects of concussions. However, there are still aspects reguarding concussions that need to be clarified and studied regarding concussions: what are the long term effects of one concussion compared to many concussions, are the people who receive more playing time worse off in the long run, and will repeated concussions lead eventually to a complete mental collapse in everyone.
Concussion in schools and the NFL are a problem. They can be life-altering injuries, and they have been around for years before anyone became aware of how dangerous they can be. Ever since the discovery of football many athletes have gotten their “bell rung” and doing damage to their brain with no knowledge of it. It has been recently that there has been more talk of understanding how severe concussions can be. Many think it is not a big deal but it is considered a mild form of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The NFL had ignored all the information given to them regard concussion and they need to review their protocol and enforce it. Many players are still playing while
Concussions are a real problem, but what they cause with CTE is even more important. With the research being done by doctors is helping the NFL take steps to help lessen the amount of concussions that they have been having from year to year. The reason the NFL has had a drop-in concussion is because they have been making rules that players cannot hit the neck or head area so that nobody will launch their selves at someone else, which is helping but will not make the whole problem giving that the fact that CTE is going to be a problem because there is no way that concussions are the many reasons that people can get CTE. The reason why is because a player can hit their head against the ground and not get a concussion.
In recent years concussions have become more and more of a topic due to their effects on the people who receives them. Concussions can cause a multitude of problems for a person later in their life whether they suffered from a major concussion or just a minor concussion. These problems can occur if a person ended up with multiple concussions over a lifetime or if they only have had one single concussion The problems a person can encounter are all somewhat connected but very diverse at the same time. Most of the problems a person will encounter will be due to a change in that person's brain but they can range from simple memory problems to suicidal problems.
The scientist is discovering, that players are being diagnosed with life threatening illness. They are looking at former athletes and finding they have ALS disease. : In order to qualify for the new NFL Settlement Funding program, former players must have received a diagnosis for at least one of the following: - Level 1.5 Neurocognitive Impairment- Level 2.0 Neurocognitive Impairment- Parkinson's- Alzheimer's- ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) aka Lou Gehrig's Disease- Death with CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. (“NLC introduces new NFL concussion funding program”) There are also other diseases that come from concussions. CTE is another disease that former players are suffering from. : Recently, a group of researchers from the Department of
Many memories are made in sports, but sadly, some of the greatest players cannot remember them. Concussions are temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head. The term is also used loosely of the aftereffects such as confusion or temporary incapacity (dictionary definition). Athletes can usually can recognize a mild concussion by seeing lights or hearing bells. Before concussions were discovered it was known as “getting your bell rung” because they didn’t know what it was. Concussions are one of the most dangerous things that could happen to the human head. Concussions can cause symptoms to last a long time, and people could not know they have one. Concussions long result is Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, also known at CTE. CTE can cause Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as; ALS, anxiety, depression, and even death. A concussion is a onetime event that can make a huge change to one’s life.
It’s important to try and get parents involved with the rules and law for concussions. The graph above shows that concussions haven’t changed at all over the past year of years in general. The graph doesn’t really help the laws point on why it’s good. If anything it hurts in more than try to convince parents and or guardians that it can and will help improve concussion problems. Many of the politicians say that kids may be the blame for the problem. How they play and approach the sport. Can affect the outcome of the injuries or injuries of other athletes. Kids do have a lot of affected on how they can receive a concussion or head injury. But many parents believe the politician are just making excuses.
