September 1st, 1939 is the day Hitler invaded Poland. Two days after this Britain and and France declared war on Germany, leading the world into it’s second world war.. Canada Joined World War 2 September 10th, 1939. Unlike World War 1, Britain declaring war on Germany didn’t automatically mean Canada was included as well. However Canada was still greatly supportive of both Britain and France so Canada also declaring war was not unexpected. World War 2 lasted six long years officially ending September 2, 1945 generating between 45-60 casualties, 45000 in which were Canadian. (History).
Those who were not killed in battle were commonly captured and taken prisoner. The Allies (Britain, France, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, India, the Soviet Union, China and the United States of America.) usually ended up either in Germany or Japan as prisoners of war. Approximately 9 000 Canadians were

The seven Canadians were tied together with barbed wire and lead on a march to the Happy Valley Race Track. The men wouldn’t spend much time here and eventually made their way via cargo truck to their POW camp in Shamshuipo. Ralph would reunite with Deighton here. The camp supplied little food consisting of mostly mouldy rice and the rare piece of fish head or whale fat. Not only was the food horrid but garbage was thrown around the parade square, body parts were stacked in a pile and lice and bed bugs were present in all sleeping quarters. By the summer of 1942 Ralph would be nearly blinded by diphtheria and Deighton would lose his life to the disease. Ralph was sent away for special care that saved his life but was returned to the hell of the POW camp shorty. Time passed and by the next summer of 1943 Japan was losing the war due to the loss of able bodied soldiers and recruited POWs who had enough fight left for another battle.(Sakamoto. Ralph’s
World war 2 started when Great Britain declared war on Germany In 1939. It ended in 1945. Almost one million Australians both men and women were involved in world war 2. On September 3rd 1939, Prime minister Robert Gordon Menzies announced that Australia will now be involved in world war 2. This was done after Australian land came under attack for the first time. Japanese aircrafts bombed towns North West Australia and Japanese submarines attacked Sydney Harbour. Australians fought in campaigns against Germany, Italy, The Mediterranean, North Africa, and Japan.
Canada began as british colonies that settled people along the west coast. From there, Canada began to develop its own identity as its people became less reliant on Britain. Over 200 years later, Canada was officially founded on July 1st, 1867. As a new country, it was not as experienced compared to other independent nation ie. the British Empire. Although at the beginning Canada was technically part of the British Empire, Canada had proved itself to be a powerful ally in war. Canada’s influence on major international wars was significant through their skill and military prowess, along with supplying their respective allies with resources that enabled the soldiers to continue fighting on, especially in wars such as WW1,WW2 and the Korean war.
Over one million Australians were involved in World War 2. The war effort came from women and men alike, serving interstate and internationally. At the end of this war, there were 40,000 dead and more than 30,000 taken as prisoners of war. This was the first time in history that Australia's mainland had come under direct attack. The war was a catastrophic global conflict which did have a significant impact on Australians. World War 2 started in 1939, with the German invasion of Poland, and ended in 1945, by Japan being bombed by the USA. The two main sides in the fight were the Axis powers which were the countries Germany, Italy and Japan and the Allies which featured USA, France, Britain and consequently Australia. The role of women,
During the 1930s and 1940s, there was prejudice and discrimination against the Jews. The Nazis blamed them for Germany’s problems, and many people followed them. With people hating on the Jews, the Nazis were able to manipulate and control the people. The Jews were treated badly by not just the Germans, but many others as well. When Hitler came into power in 1933, he commanded the extermination of German Jews. The Jewish people were mistreated and it should not have happened. A ship called the St. Louis carried Jewish people that were fleeing Nazi persecution. They went to many countries, but they were refused and had to find somewhere else. Hitler wanted to get rid of them, so the Nazis gathered them up and placed them in concentration camps were they would be
Next was after D-Day, which was June 6, 1944. Western Europe fighting got intense, and because of that there were lots of Canadian Casualties. King finally agreed on conscription and sending conscripted soldiers overseas.
(Doc. A). This proves that there was a fifty-fifty chance of being healthy or getting sick and possibly dying; it may have seemed unfortunate for a soldier to die of illness as opposed to in the front lines fighting for their country. The “ Huts at the camp” show the constant
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states specific criteria that determine if a country should take part in a war. Canada’s participation in World War 1, follows the elements and criteria given, proving that Canada’s involvement is just. Most importantly, the Catechism states in similar words, that any army fighting a war needs to have a high likelihood of being successful at winning (“there must be serious prospects of success"). World War 1 ended on November 11th, 1918, and the Triple Entente won (the Triple Entente included Russia, Britain, France, and Canada). When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, the Triple Alliance would have 3,000,000 soldiers at their disposal.
The battle of World War II was a very difficult thing to go through. “World War II began on September 1, 1939, when 1.5 million German troops invaded Poland.”(World War II) World War II made people leave their families and go fight. It also got countries involved that originally weren’t and don’t need to be involved. There were allies and there were Axis powers, allies helped other people and then there were countries that just kept attacking others.(World War II) The war kept causing more damage and harm but didn’t force countries to join. “The number of countries participating in the war on either side increased over the course of the next two years to include virtually all the countries of the world.”(Canada Enters World War II)
Between the years of 1894 and 1914, America’s investments overseas have increased five-fold; however, German U-boats and the Great Britain’s naval blockade threaten our foreign interests. Thus, the United States must join the Allies in The Great War and defend our country, her interests and her allies overseas in Europe. In this paper the reader will be introduced to the pros and cons of America joining the fight against the Central Powers, and why it is essential that the country put up a strong fight against the enemy and become involved with the war.
One week after Britain and France declared war on Germany, Canada announced their participation in World War II. After gaining their Statute of Westminster in 1931, Canada could control their foreign policy. This states that Canada can choose what wars they want to remain neutral in, and what ones they want to participate in. This was the first time in history that Canada declared war as an independent nation from Britain; marking a significant day in Canada.
Since the soldiers only got about 600 calories a day it was not sufficient enough in vitamins and minerals to have a healthy immune system (Wells, 2013). How could the soldiers survive through such harsh conditions? Everyone had a different reason for this. Some soldiers had family which strengthened their will to live, some stole and scrounged from guards and even from each other; most helped their mates and relied on them when things got tough. Without the help of mates during such a tough time, a lot of people would not have survived the ordeal because they heavily relied on each other.
In the book, Unbroken, the POWs became delusional after being poorly treated at the camps. Even twenty-six-year-old Louie Zamperini had wasted his athlete body in one of these camps. Being POWs to the Japanese was not easy. The men were treated as if they were
In the late morning of September 3, 1939, Britain declared war on Germany following the invasion of Poland. England decides to strike at Germany with all their forces when Germany was attacking Poland at the time, which was a good opportunity for England to strike. On the 6th of September, South Africa declared war upon Germany, and on the 10th of September, Canada declares war on Germany. At this point in time, Germany is now getting attacked simultaneously by the Allied forces. As England landed in France on 9th September ready to attack, they were not aware that Hitler had made a plan with the Russian dictator to attack Poland from the East and West.
These soldiers would be more aware of the chance that they too could become a prisoner of war. Striking fear into their minds and causing them to rethink what they are really becoming a part of. More importantly this was just the beginning for these frightened soldiers who faced a unpredictable and scary journey that later became a significant part of canadian history.
The Second World War began in September of 1939 and was between the Allies and the Axis. It began with Germany’s unprovoked attack and conquest of Poland, and involved Britain and France from the beginning. Its origins lay in German resentment at the terms of the Treaty of Versailles (1919), the economic crisis of 1929-30, which favored the rise to power of Fascist dictators, the failure of the League of Nations to gain international acceptance for disarmament, and the policy of imperialism adopted by Germany, Italy and Japan as a means of acquiring raw materials and markets. As a part of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany had to accept full responsibility for the First World War, which then led up to the outbreak of the Second. The
