The election of 1860 was one like no other, it was the event that lead to the succession of the eleven states that would become to be known as the Confederate States of America, including Texas. In the United States of America there was a lot of tension due to the different lifestyles of the North and the South, particularly those differences between the views in slavery. As we all know, the North was a very industrial and mechanics region, as for the South a very agricultural area that depended highly on their existence of slaves. In the Republican Party slavery was frowned upon. This was the main and ultimately most important reason for which the South did not want the republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln to rise to victory. As this election
Throughout much of the mid-nineteenth century Northern and Southern states remained locked in a fierce debate over the issues of slavery, state’s rights, and taxation. This partitioning between the North and the South is evident when examining the election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln, a Northerner and product of the Republican party, faced opposition from Southern Democrats to such a great extent that he did not even make the ballot in the South. The South was so angry at the prospect of a Northern Republican becoming president and possibly interfering with their rights that upon Lincoln’s election, they seceded from the Union, leading up to the bloodiest war the United States had ever taken part in: the Civil War. This lack of conflict resolution
There were many issues during the election of 1864. It was during a time while the nation faced with much doubts and issues. The war was upon the country and the voters had to determine whether to vote for the fate of the country, issues that faced around the war, or would the people vote to come to an agreement toward peace. The last time that the elections held during war period was in 1812. The election of 1864 was Lincolns second term. No president ever won an election twice in a row after Andrew Jackson was president. He was widely scrutinized for the way he handled the wars. The union had suffered long times of disappointments and many ruins the president’s strategy’s. The key political issues in the era was that
At the beginning of the 1860s, the national Democratic party split in half. It had split into the Northern Democrats and the Southern Democrats. They split because of the issue of slavery, which was very alive at the time. As well, the Dred Scott case played an important role in the split of the party. The Northern Democrats didn’t want slavery to expand into the new territory. On the other end, Southern Democrats called for the preservation of slavery within their states and the expansion into the new territories of the west. Their contentious battles at the national convention in both Charleston and Baltimore prove that they were a party divided. Because of this, it would eventually lead to the election of Abraham Lincoln and the secession of the southern states.
The 1860 election was when Abraham Lincoln was elected president. The confederates Hated Lincoln because he was part of the Republican party (which was against slavery), as a matter of fact, Lincoln despised slavery. Lincoln once wrote “if slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong”. With a man like Lincoln in office, many thought it was only time before he controls the supreme court and congress, and that they would soon abolish slavery. A South Carolina newspaper after the election wrote “the loss of liberty, property, home,country-everything that makes life worth living”.
In the 1850?s America was being torn apart because of one thing: slavery. Anti-Slavery supporters such as John Brown were heroes to the North and terrorists to the South. But amongst all this chaos, the presidential election still remained. Everybody agrees that Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860, but some believe Stephen Douglass should have won.
The final factor leading to the secession was the election of 1860. The election of 1860 brought all the previous conflicts I discussed to a breaking point. The Democratic Party split into three groups along regional lines, each having different ideas about how to deal with the slavery issue in the West. These groups lined up against Abraham Lincoln the candidate for the Republican Party, who wanted no slavery in the West. Lincoln’s opponents were extremely divided giving Abraham Lincoln a solid win with fifty-nine percent electoral votes and less than percent of the popular votes.
In the year 1861, Texas, an American slave state, seceded from the Union, joining the Confederate states of America. Prior to the state’s secession, Abraham Lincoln was elected president; he was an abolitionist, so tensions rose throughout the nation and that resulted in southern secession. Shortly after that, tensions snapped and the Civil War began.
Texas seceded from the Union in early 1861, like many other slaveholding states, and joined the Confederate States of America. It was the last to secede before the firing Battle of Fort Sumter signaled the beginning of the Civil War and made citizens of the upper South to choose between fighting against or with their Southern peers. The election of Abraham Lincoln, as well as the threatening of slavery and traditional liberties due to Republican control of the executive branch furthered the secession crisis in Texas. Texas secessionists were further encouraged by South Carolina’s decision to secede from the Unions. Some Texans took a while to accept secession, and some never accepted it. The timing of the
To begin with, immediately after the election and inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, the newly-established Republican Party’s presidential nominee, eleven states of the South seceded from the Union. These events marked the beginning of the Civil War and the war was a result of many political tensions that had emerged between the North and the South in the prior decades, all of which were associated with the institution of slavery installed in the Southern United States. President Lincoln began the Civil War with the South in response to states’ secession from the Union, and therefore, the war was not solely concentrated over the issue of slavery in American society. The North fought to preserve the Union while the Confederacy fought to
During 1860, there was an election for a new president of the United States. One of the candidates was Abraham Lincoln. He was from a largely known anti-slavery Republican Party. The south part of the United States was worried about Lincoln probability to win the election as their economy mostly depended on the labour slaves. At the end of 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the election and was elected as the new President of the United States. Lincoln later looked against slavery as contradict to the South where the internal slave trade in the southern states were strongly continued. Lincoln later banned slavery in all the U.S. territories.
Why was the election of 1860 so important after all? The election of 1860 was very momentous. (Schlesinger jr., 17) On November 6, 1860 Lincoln won the election with 180 electoral votes and 1.8 million popular votes. Lincoln was the strongest candidate and had the higher chance of winning. (Schlesinger jr., 17) After Lincoln won the election, South Carolina seceded from the Union after hearing about this news. After Abraham Lincoln won, South Carolina feared that Abraham Lincoln would abolish slavery completely. Obviously South Carolina didn’t want that to happen since they supported slavery. After South Carolina’s secession, more and more states started seceding, following their “president”, Jefferson Davis to make their own country, the Confederate States. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “We can not have free government without elections…” (History.com Staff, paragraph 5) At this time, there were now two countries with two different presidents all in one country.
Lincoln was elected in November 1860, he supported anti-slavery stood along the Democratic Party. Lincoln did mention many times, he wasn’t going to do anything about slavery. Either way, the south was conflicted by the stand he took and not in their favor.
They each tried to rack up enough electoral votes but failed to do so. As they predicted, Lincoln had the most electoral votes but not the majority for the popular vote. He got forty percent of the popular vote and received 180 electoral votes. Douglas came in third and he won 12 electoral votes which came from Missouri and three from New Jersey but second in popular votes. John C. Breckinridge came in second with 72 electoral votes but got third in popular votes. Finally, Bell came in third with 39 electoral votes but lost altogether in the popular vote with about 600,000 popular votes. The South primarily voted for Breckinridge while the North voted for Lincoln. This meant that the South wanted slavery to be legal in all states and territories because Breckinridge supported slavery in the territories. The North voted for Lincoln because he did not support slavery but, in the beginning of the campaign, he stated that he would not end slavery where it still existed which meant that he did not support slavery in the territories. Douglas was voted by Missouri which shows that they supported slavery but wanted to conserve the Union. States like Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee all voted for John Bell. The election of 1860 ended with the victory of Abraham Lincoln which would lead to the South’s secession soon
In November of 1860, the presidential election was one of the most momentous in the history of the United States. The land was split between North and the South and was smoldering for almost a decade. The candidates for the presidential election of 1860 were Abraham Lincoln, Republican, John Breckinridge, Southern Democrat, John Bell, Constitutional Union, and Stephen Douglas, Northern Democratic. Abraham Lincoln was against the increase of slavery into the new territories. Lincoln did not receive one vote from the south, but he did win over 50% of the Electoral College votes so Lincoln won the presidency to become the 16th President of the United States. Abraham Lincoln was known as one of America’s greatest heroes because of his inconceivable impact on our nation and his unique appeal. Lincoln was a captain in the military and a lawyer all before becoming the 16th President of the United States. Lincoln was one of two U.S. presidents who was assassinated while in office. Lincoln was also the president during the roughest part of American history, the Civil War. Lincoln was heavily in favor of abolishing slavery and so most of the citizens in the northern states of the U.S... On the other hand, the south had large plantations and favored slavery because the slaves worked for free and made plantation owners and other farmers a staggering amount of profit. The slaves were not treated as human beings; therefore, the slaves were mistreated. Slave owners often beat their slaves
The controversy over slaves ultimately led to the secession. Abraham Lincoln thinks slavery is wrong and he wants to stop it from spreading. Earlier, he had warned that slavery could separate a nation. In the 1860 election Lincoln is elected, but southerners are worried he will end slavery forever. Southern states start to secede because they are worried. First South Carolina succeeds, then North, Texas, and then Florida too. They give themselves a new name called the Confederate States of America. (Wise...)
