Have you ever been in a difficult situation where you have to confess, and tell the truth and nothing but the truth. In the story Red kayak Ben DiAngelo and Mrs. DiAngelo, (Ben’s mother), go out kayaking in their red kayak. But it just so happens that Digger ( a kid that hates their guts for buying his grandfather’s farm and changing up the whole area) drills holes through their kayak and they sink. Ben ends up dying but his mother makes it through. Later on the main character Brady, (who baby sat for Ben DiAngelo, and went out to save him and he still died) found out that his two best friends J.T. and Digger were involved in the terrible event/crime, and he had a hard time telling the truth throughout the novel because he was to afraid to turn them in. Realistic fiction is a genre where a novel or story has events that could happen in real life. In order for a story to be considered realistic fiction, it should include the elements of realistic fiction. For example authentic characters are characters that are convincingly developed, multi-dimensional, and show growth over time. Credible events are conflicts or problems that could occur in the real world. Real settings are settings that are vividly portrayed and that could exist in the real world. True-to-life themes are memorable themes that could be applied to one's own life. The last element a realistic fictional story should include is believable dialogue. Believable dialogue contains realistic conversations that help
Are fiction stories always based on imagination? Or does it come from someone’s reality? Have you ever asked yourself why people read fiction stories? Either told through movies or books, fiction stories are ways people find to escape from their reality. However, most of the fiction stories come from people’s life, or are based in a real fact in order to be credible. In some ways, the truth must be distorted to be understandable, because sometimes it can be too complex to be explained. Both Reading Lolita in Tehran, by Azar Nafisi, and How To Tell a True Story, by Tim O’Brien, attempt to discover the truth even if it was exemplified by fiction,
Realism is a combination of literary technique used to create the text. In Realism, everything is real, meaning it only focuses on the cold, hard truths of life. Realism is very detailed, and everything in the story, for example, events, places, and characters are common place. I believe Realism could be the cruelest form of writing because of the way it focuses on the mind and its reaction and its abnormalities.
Thier are five elements to realistic fiction. The 5 elements are credible events, authentic characters, real settings, true to life themes, and believable dialogue. Red Kayak is a great example of realistic fiction because of its credible events, believable dialogue and real settings. One reason Red Kayak is a great example of realistic fiction os because of credible events.
The article “Your Brain on Fiction” by Annie Murphy Paul (2012) asserts that reading can motivate the human brain, and even influences on a person’s behaviour, as has been proved by neuroscience. Not only well known parts of the brain, which responsible for written words, engage in the process of reading, and react to it, but also other sections, for instance, one of them relates to the sense of smell. The article provides information about the study that describes the reaction of participant’s brain to different words and their combinations. The words that have a strong connection with the smell or texture metaphors activate the sensory cortex. Moreover, researchers determine the response of the motor cortex by the words that represent movement.
The editors of “Flash Fiction” asked themselves the question, “How short can a story be and still truly be a story?” (11). With this in mind, they settled on a maximum word count of 750, with a minimum of 250. They debated keeping it as “one story to a page, just a little book of little stories,” but soon realized that, without the turn of a page during a story, the reader is easily bored (13). Instead, they allowed the stories to begin and end naturally in the book’s layout.
Realism can be defined as “the faithful representation of reality" or "verisimilitude" where it is a literary technique used in the literary works by the writer. Using the realism technique, it also signifies a particular kind of subject matter especially regarding the ordinary people of the middle class in the society. The element of realism portrays the events that could also happen even in the real life, not only in a story as it focuses on the natural behavior of a group of people in the society. Most of Tagore stories include the technique of realism as it is expressed in the settings, characterization and the plot. Through the eyes of the ordinary people, the readers might also apply their story in their life as they can easily relate
What would you do if you found out that your friends had committed a crime that caused a boy’s death? Would you turn them in even if you were slightly involved in the crime? Well that is the predicament that the main character in Red Kayak faces. The major plot events in Red Kayak go like this: Mrs. DiAngelo and her son Ben were in a kayaking accident, and Ben dies as a result, leaving Brady, the main character, traumatized. Later, Brady finds out that his two friends, J.T. and Digger caused the kayak to sink. Brady also remembers a day when the three of them were swimming and Digger was acting angry at the DiAngelos for buying his grandfather’s farm. Brady had suggested to put holes in the kayak, so now Brady has to decide what to do because the plan to sink the kayak was his idea. Things like this make Red Kayak a good example of realistic fiction. Realistic fiction is a type of story that might really happen. The five elements of realistic fiction are: credible events, authentic characters, real setting, true-to-life themes, and believable dialogue. Credible events are events that could really happen. Authentic characters are characters that develop over time. Real setting shows a setting that could really exist. True-to-life themes are themes that could be applied to one’s own life. And finally, believable dialogue contains realistic conversations. Red Kayak is realistic fiction because of its credible events, authentic characters, and true-to-life themes.
All books are classified by genre. Red Kayak is considered as realistic fiction because it has things like real settings in the story. Considering plot events in Red Kayak there is death, hiding from consequences, and the main character’s friends going to a camp where they just work for nine months. This could happen in real life making it realistic fiction. Other than that there is believable dialogue, true-to-life themes, and again real settings.
The book The Color of Water is an example of realistic literature. James McBride presents several characteristics of this genre in his book, such as moral issues, unpleasant aspects of life, and shows us how people handle problems.
In literature, there are genres. Two main genres are fiction and nonfiction. Fiction is a work of art that is not real or based on the facts. “‘Fiction’ refers to literature created from the imagination” (“What is the difference…?”). It can explain a story in a different point of view, maybe in a way that is out of the norm. Fiction is basically just nonfiction in an exaggerated way. Though fiction may not be based on the facts, it can still resemblance a sense of real life events. “Fiction may base on stories on actual historical events. Although fictitious characters are presented in a fictitious setting in stories and novels, yet they may have some resemblance with real life events and characters” (“Fiction”). Literature is meant to
“In nineteen minutes, you can stop the world, or you can just jump off it. In nineteen minutes, you can revenge” (Picoult). Those words are of the opening lines of Jodi Picoult’s best seller, Nineteen Minutes. Although this novel is heart wrenching, and cuts into the ‘grays’ of school shootings, it is anything but original. Lead character, Peter Houghton, is an almost perfect profile replication of 1999’s Columbine shooters, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris. A simple personaltiy analysis will reveal that both Peter and Columbine Shooters suffer from parental neglect, the violent virtual world, ruthless peers, as well as easy access to weapons.
I read the novel, Two Summers, by Aimee Friedman. The genre of this novel is realistic fiction. The genre is realistic fiction because the events that take place in the book are believable. The main character in the book, Summer Everett, has divorced parents and problems with her best friend. Both of those things happen in the real world today.
Realism can be defined as view in which the author tries to depict life as truthfully and accurately as possible. The use of realistic or lifelike settings described by the author or narrated by a character, add a layer of realism to the story, even if the story itself is fictitious. The characters themselves are often portrayed as believable as possible, to the point that the character being described could actually exist; they are often depicted as very average people, void of extreme wealth, influence, or astounding abilities. The reason characters and settings are often
Analyzing characters, describing the unforgiving mother nature, and making a story feel relatable are all elements of Realism. Both The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane, and To Build a Fire, by Jack London, are literary pieces that seem to be written using a more realistic storyline. Realism is an aspect in each piece, making the stories more "realistic", and able to have a message that will stick with the reader. The infantry going into battle, and the man who goes into the foreboding cold are both analyzed by the narrator. The weather and setting in both stories is unforgiving, and one of the character's lives comes to a quick, early ending.
Realism is famous for the way it illustrates a world that seems real and true. In “A Sweatshop Romance,” Abraham Cahan creates a clear visual of the events that occurred at the coat-making factory owned by Mr. and Mrs. Lipman. Cahan shows the lower class’s working environment and how they interact with each other in a realistic manner. In “The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane, four men are trapped on a lifeboat after their ship sinks. After almost being saved multiple time, the group of men began to lose hope. The end of the story consists of the rescuing of the cook, the correspondent, and the captain while the oiler was found face down in the water. The realistic reactions and events in “The Open Boat” adds truth to the story.
