Hope,
Thank you, for sharing your personal experience. I agree with the article, "Raising Smart Kids" was enlightening and detailed on the topic of fixed mind-set and growth mind-set. I learned that if we nurture a growth mind-set in our homes and at schools we will give children the “tools to thrive in their quests and to become accountable employees and citizen” (Dweck, 2007, p. 6). In the long run my goal as an educator is to prepare students to become responsible citizens and help them thrive. Carol Dweck, stated, educators could improve their students' learning if they “persistently encouraged them to think about their mental skills as malleable, rather than as properties fixed at birth” (Glenn, 2010, p.5).
Brainology talks about the two different mindsets and how both of them work. Wes Moore’s (author) mother has the growth mindset. She has the growth mind set because she wanted her son to do better and try. When he did and started getting more involved with his life he began to have a growth mindset. In the other hand the other Wes Moore’s mother also had a growth mindset but in my opinion she didn’t really use that to do better her son had a fixed mindset because he didn’t think school was enough. The other Wes Moore was comfortable with doing drugs and getting the money that’s all he really wanted. His brother tony had a growth minds even though he was in drugs for a long time he wanted his younger brother to get out of the drugs and do
Do you think intelligence is a fixed trait? If you do, then you might be one of many people with a fixed mind-set. In Carol S. Dweck’s an essay, “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids”, she describes fixed and growth mind-sets. She describes how they affect school, and how they affect social relationships as well. The two central ideas of “The Secret to Raising Smart Kids” are that fixed mind-sets can make a person shy away from a challenge and that growth mind-sets can be put into place by parents.
I’m going to tell you how student learn these mindsets. In the 90s parents thought the most important thing that you child should have was self-esteem. But were they messed up is that you cant just hand your kids self-esteem. They took a poll among parents and found that 85% of parents thought that it was necessary to “praise” their children’s abilities to boost confidence. Now were going to talk about growth mindset. These students believe that intelligence is something that can be gained through education and effort. I wish in high school that I would of taken it more serious because now I could have had a growth mindset witch would of helped me out a lot in college. Those students have growth mindsets. They believe that you can gain intelligence through learning. Those with a growth mindset had a very straightforward idea of effort. The idea that the harder you work the greater the outcome is and I think that’s true. When these students had a set back in school they simply just study more or differently next time. That was my biggest set back in high school. Many bright students find grade school fairly easy and get right through it. But later on in life like in college they struggle. They don’t want to put the time into something and feel dumb when they get a bad grade on it. That’s bad because you should never feel dumb about something that you tried your hardest to complete. I hope that this information was helpful
This is important because it’s hard to really see a lot of growth within a time period. In the article, Carol also backs this up with evidence from a controlled experiment. The experiment was focused on the minds of seventh graders and talking to them in a certain way that influenced their mindsets. The seventh graders were split up into two groups and were to work on an eight-session workshop, however, the control group was taught about what a growth mindset is and how it can be applied into their school life. This factor leads to the control group having improved at the end of the semester. This experiment showed that just by knowing about what a growth mindset is and how it could be applied in life, people are more likely to grow more rapidly than people whose minds are fixed on having a limit to their knowledge or skills. This is important because the sooner that kids know how to make their brain think that there are endless possibilities to who they can be or what they can do, the more they are likely to excel in anything that they attempt, not only in school but in their own personal life. This will allow a person with a fixed mindset to be able to change their way of thinking and start to see more about what they can accomplish with their life.
The overall theme of the sources we studied was about growth mindset. The most important thing about growth mindset is that intelligence can be developed. Also, the brain can grow by hard working and practicing. In “You Can Grow your Intelligence,” the author maintains that contrary to the belief that a person is born either smart, average, or dumb, instead the brain is more like a muscle, it changes and get stronger when you use it. Lastly, Carol Dweck, in a Ted Talk titled “ The Power Of Believing That You Can improve,” narrates how she researches about the growth mindset and the fixed mindset, and the benefit of having a growth mindset. Also, in her video she gave many good advice of how you can change a person that have fixed mindset to a growth mindset.
A growth mindset is usually set in middle school but you can change many fixed mindsets by telling them otherwise. The way the author describes what causes a fixed mindset is pretty interesting because I was like this and my grades decreased but now I'm realizing this more. Teachers need to stop praising students “We found that intelligence praise encourages a fixed mindset more often than did pats on the back for effort. Those congratulated for their intelligence, for an example, shield away from a challenging assignment- they wanted an easy one instead”(25) which means teachers need to stop giving students treat because it causes them to do worse in school by making them have a fixed mindset. This would help Anaheim students drastically because that's what many of the students coming from middle school come in with the growth mindset but then get crushed with how hard the work is and then they give
“The Secret to Raising Smart Kids” by Carol S. Dweck is about the development of a child’s mentality when it comes to their self-confidence as well their capability of learning and working hard. Dweck informs the reader that there are two types of children and people in general when it comes to learning as well as growing. One group are the helpless people and one group are those with a growth mindset. Whether a person falls into the helpless or those willing to grow greatly impacts their success as well as their future.
Intelligence can be developed through experience and learning. In Carol S. Dweck’s who is in fact a PhD expert in the field of psychology wrote an article, “Transforming Student’s Motivation to Learn,” she states, “Results showed that what students believe about their brains - whether they see their intelligence as something that’s fixed or something that can grow and change – has profound effect on their motivation, learning, and school achievement.” Essentially what this is illustrating is that having a fixed or growth mindset can minimize students from being terrified of failure and in addition faced and embrace their challenges rather than running from them. Students need to understand an intelligent mindset is a paramount pathway in becoming successful, and eventually one needs to not be easily discouraged at the first sight of a challenge, but become motivated and driven by failure, and in turn willing to work harder to accomplish something they want to succeed at. A perfect example of this is through Mike Rose’s school experiences, we can see how he demonstrates the concepts of a growth and fixed mindset.
A fixed mindset is when someone believes the abilities you are born with are the ones you will always have, and they cannot be changed. Children who possess a fixed mindset are likely to attribute their success to pure luck and their failures to ability or lack thereof. This is also known as learned helplessness. Children with a growth mindset, however, have a contrasting perspective. They believe abilities can be improved over time with an input of effort. They attribute their success to their abilities and their failures to variables that can be easily altered. As I have mentioned in the past, I fall under the authoritative parenting style. Because an authoritative parenting style is firm but caring and encouraging, I have cultivated a growth
There are two different mindsets, growth and fixed. The mindset you should have is a growth mindset. It affects the way you learn and act. Many people have the fixed mindset which is not good to have. Adults and kids with a fixed mindset tend to lie and think that intelligence is a natural thing compared to growth mindset who like a challenge and believe that they can get smarter.
On Wednesday we divided into groups to discuss the first chapter of Mindset. Our discussion included how different people have different mindsets and how the way we are raised can have an effect of what mindset we develop. After we talked in small groups we joined in discussion with the whole class. The points Dr. Stone made to the whole class was that as teachers we have to have a growth mindset to be able to help children learn and grow. Dr. Stone also made it a point to tell us that having a growth mindset is a choice. That was something I had not considered…maybe because I have such a fixed mindset.
Everyone learns at a different pace, but not everyone has the same mindset. There are two different type of mindsets according to Carol Dweck. The first is a fixed mindset, in which students care first and foremost about how they’ll be judged. (Dweck) The second is a growth mindset, in which students believe their most basic abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication. (Dweck) These two different mindsets shows the experiences and what we can expect. Richard Rodriguez shows a fixed mindset at first throughout his early school years, and struggles to learn English in Aria: Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood. After some time, switching to a growth mindset, Richard grows exceptionally better understanding the English language. Adapting to what you are not comfortable with is difficult, but by having a growth mindset, you can learn more efficiently as shown in Richard 's experiences.
Moreover, growth mind set is very important for successful student to apply on delayed gratification. According to Carol Dweck, “Growth mind set is understood your ability could develop.” which means ability to learn is not fixed, but it can change with your effort. Carol Dweck, “student with growth mindset engage deeply and their brain is on fire with not yet.” “Process the error, they learn from it and they correct it.” (Dweck) My advice to a successful student is to work hard and put more effort in their school. Do their homework on time, attending class every day then they will have a better future
One way growth mindset is more superior than a fixed mindset is due to the ability to develop and adapt the intelligence of a person. A fixed mindset will lock you down to the "now". A study done by Dweck tested ten-year-olds with problems that were beyond their reach of knowledge. Many of the kids were excited to learn and do better the next time, but a few were upset. They felt like testing their knowledge defeated them. "In one study, after a failure on a test, they said they'll cheat next time instead of study more. In another study, they found someone who did worse than they did so they could feel better, and in
Do you remember Dr. Carol Dweck? Please bear in mind that for you to understand your mindset, you have to think about what she has found from her teaching about this subject of mindset. She had been quoted again and again in many discussions about mindset. Much of she said on mindset has been tested and trusted. As time passes by, we’re seeing that her words are true and more helpful on this matter. For instance, she said that intelligence and personality can be cultivated and developed. And that they’re not what you can’t change if you have the growth mindset. So the terms or expressions: fixed mindset and growth mindset came from her. Let’s explain these two main types of
