Radical religious groups, more specifically cults, have been terrorizing societies across the globe for many centuries with many more to go. Why do these groups feel the need to despise those who differ from their beliefs both intellectually and physically? Is it because they view the various texts of their religions to be comprehended 100% literally? Or is it just that these radicalists use their religions as an excuse for their prohibited behaviors? Either way these doings are becoming more and more looked down upon by society as it advances, and why shouldn't they be? The usual victims of these religious extremist consist of those who are innocent under moral law. Religious radicalism is by no means something new to society. There …show more content…
A group within these that tends to be causing most of the activity between the media and popular culture is ISIS. ISIS is a group of Muslims who have developed radical beliefs as well as a hatred for the United States since their invasion in Afghanistan in 2003. Since this time, the radical terrorists have been able to spread larger and larger by focusing their emphasis on the ideology of eradicating the Sunni religion from Iraq and Syria. This idea is popular due to Iraq’s Shia majority (Laub, 2016). Expanding also may have been assisted by a 73% increase in Muslims from 2010 to 2050. This is by far the most rapidly growing religion in the entire world (Lipka, 2016). ISIS is also able to use the region's resources to its advantage as oil is the source of it’s primary income. A more deviant form of income for the Islamic terrorist groups is ransom payments. They obtain this by kidnapping important individuals, such as journalists, and demand a payment by threatening that individual's life. In 2014, ISIS made twenty million United States dollars off of these ransoms. It is no shock that Islamic terrorist groups, such as ISIS, affect not only those in Iraq and Syria. Nearing countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen to have sworn allegiance to Baghdadi. Unfortunately the threat of radical …show more content…
The conclusion this factor usually consists of all of these advances making radicalisation easier through allowing easier changes of one's mind set (Francis, 2012). This is well explained in Peter Berger’s “Four Characteristics of Modernization”, more specifically the “Decline in traditional values.”, as well as the, “Expansion of Choice” (Macionis, 2008).
Strategical factors tend to be those of a more intellectual response rather than using violent force or action. The often role in which these factors play in the developing of the mindset of radicalization within a being is the motivation. These aspects are not always responsible for developing negative mind sets. For example, after the 9/11 attacks many Americans quickly developed a mentality for perseverance as a nation (Francis,
Many people feel that cults are nothing more than a nontraditional religion, because of beliefs, organization, and interest. Cults are much more than just little religions. They are a dangerous, and in the United States there is little we can do about it.
Still, in our society, there are certain insane cults in the name of religion but they don’t have any importance in the society. So, these are considered as the non-religious cults that won’t give any positive impacts in the society. Now, here are mentioned the 10 non-religious cults that would help you to get familiar with the real facts:
Sects are not a new phenomenon and they have always attracted controversy. Throughout History, humanity has formed secret societies and secular groups to try to make sense of the world. Most of the time, their strong beliefs have sprung from dissatisfaction with mainstream religions, although the influence
1. Osama bin Laden is perhaps one of the most well known extreme Islamic fundamentalists in modern history because of his acts of terrorism against the United States. Even after his death al-Qaeda continues to function and other extremist groups, such as ISIS, continue to sow death and destruction in the Middle East. I will try to discuss why fundamental religious movements have continued to grow over the last several decades. First I would like to comment on the incredible diversity of Islamic opinion and as well as the variety of Islamic fundamentalist groups. There are many different groups or individuals claiming to be the official religious authority of Islam but there is no true unanimous leader since the caliphs ended. The views
Islamic States of Iraq and Sham ISIS, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, al Qaeda in Iraq, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Islamic State, Da’ish is an active group formed c. 2014. ISIS is a terrorist group that sole purpose is pushing their beliefs on others and if their religion isn’t accepted in the appropriate way (how they expected) they then result to violence. Da’ish is the official name of the terrorist group known as ISIS, dramatically arrived and shocked many people in the West. The horrifying and violent events that have occurred since the appearance if ISIS struck fear into the hearts of people all across the world. Even though fear is an extreme emotion, the hatred that came with it is even stronger and is more Ernest.
Cults can be evil and mind controlling. They can also be extremely dangerous. According to Rick Ross, an expert consultant and intervention specialist, “there are several signs of a potentially unsafe group or leader.” These signs include: “absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability; there is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil; followers can never be good enough; and the group or leader is the exclusive means of knowing the truth or receiving validation, no other process or discovery is really acceptable or credible.” Cult leaders use mind control to control their group. This could be dangerous or life threatening. Leaders are
The recruiting of an American jihad radical begins by focusing on a certain person with either a socio, economic or political dissatisfaction that is typically shared with a personal problem of some sort. Just as most young people are searching for the answer to life, successful recruitment occurs because of ignorance or minimum exposure to mainstream religions. “Most of the terrorists have some occupational skills. Three-fourths are either professional (physicians, lawyers, architects, engineers, or teachers) or semi-professionals (businessmen, craftsmen, or computer specialists). They are solidly anchored in family responsibilities. Three-fourths are married and the majorities have children” (Sageman). It seems that the ties to terrorism
ISIS obtains such a profuse amount of money that they are wealthier then several actual countries. ISIS has grown from a violent growing cell to a violent growing state. But fighting a war to establish a caliphate is expensive, especially when the U.S is trying to flip the bill. According to some estimates, they have placed Isis’ income to 3 million dollars per day. The Government has begun to examine and understand how ISIS raise their money. Isis has revenue coming from multiple areas such as: capturing cities, capturing oil feeds and refineries, as well as donations. Surprisingly, a majority of their funds come from ransoms, kidnappings and, unorganized crime extortions.
The purpose of this paper is to annotate four sources that I will analyze for my final research paper. These sources focus on the following items: (a) Comparing Muslim converts and non-converts in the United States, (b) the psychology of radicalization, (c) the risk of radicalization and terrorism, and (d) how we can combat homegrown radicalization and terrorism. By analyzing these sources, I will be able to develop in-depth reasoning on this topic and complete the research paper.
Terrorism is a difficult issue to understand and grasp for many people. What is even more difficult to understand is what drives an individual to become radicalized to the point of joining a terrorist organization and committing terrorist acts. While there is not specific criteria or a “cookie cutter” approach to understanding what motivates and radicalizes an individual to participate in such atrocities, there are however, several psychological and behavioral factors that have been common among these individuals. The following paper will outline some of the psychological and behavioral factors that attribute to an individual’s radicalization and eventual willingness and even perhaps
Terrorism has been creating havoc across the globe for the entirety of recorded history. Today, with the invention of the Internet and different computer programs, these radical groups that enact these deadly attacks are able to change the way they operate through the use of technological advances to further their onslaught on humanity. The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation defines terrorism as “the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.” (International vs. Domestic Terrorism). Every person on the planet can be affected by terrorism, regardless of religion, gender, or race. Throughout history radical groups who become obsessed with their own opinions and beliefs try to force others to believe in their views through displays of violence and terror. Contrary to modern beliefs that terrorists are only radical Islam groups like Al Qaeda and Isis, but in reality almost every group of people from Christians to even environmentalists have enacted radical terrorist attacks. Terrorism, like technology, is not exclusive to industrialized nations or countries but is available to anyone with the right resources. These technologies are used throughout the world to connect average people to others and is almost always used for good. Terrorist organizations take advantage of new found communications
Today’s current leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has considered himself the caliphate of ISIS. He was a former member of Al Qaeda which was a small terrorist group that combined with other small terrorist groups to become of what is now ISIS. Baghdadi wants to create an Islamic State in which shows the real roots of what it means to be a Muslim. To accomplish these goals, ISIS has been involved in serval criminal acts. According to the article, “Why Is Money Still Flowing into Isis?” by The Editorial Board, they state, “Extorting civilians and businesses has brought in hundreds of millions of dollars, they say. Despite American efforts to cut of the group’s oil revenues, the most recent estimate is that ISIS earns about $40 million a month selling oil from fields in Syria and Iraq…” (The Educational Board). This has caused ISIS to become powerful because they even teach the little ones how to behead their teddy bear so when they are older they are able to be behead an actual human. These brutal attacks have harmed hundreds of lives that the world has come to the assumption that we have to safe innocent lives that run in danger of harm daily. In recent events like the Paris attack it shows how cold hearted this terrorist group
The Most Bizarre Cults in the World Cults basically refer to groups that happen to believe in cultures and beliefs even if people are responding positively or negatively. There are numerous cults that are either public or private but even so, they managed to be known by people and convince to be powerful enough to take down anything. Here are the most bizarre cults in the world. List of The Most Bizarre Cults in the World:
This essay will describe the psychological, and behavior factors in terrorism, while listing the motivating factors behind them. The means of communication, and influence behind the narratives that would inspire future acts of terrorism. The factors of the psychology of the Al Qaeda leadership from Osama Bin Laden. This paper will also compare and contrast the radicalization models that would explain terrorist motives. And finally the factors of the disengagement of terrorism, and the processes behind them.
Most arguments, from what I have learned, are based on destructive action to life itself. There are definitely some cult leaders who do some terrible things, such as Warren Jeffs and Jim Jones. Warren Jeffs is a leader of a religious cult in Utah, who claims to be God’s prophet. He was incarcerated for sexually assaulting a twelve year old girl and raping a fifteen year old girl. Since he has been imprisoned, he has enforced some extreme rules on his remaining members.
