One of the vital components of a radiation therapy position is the ability to work as a valued team member. I spent two months in a clinic that lacked a strong team dynamic. I believe this started with the lead therapist who was disconnected from the team and it felt as though the team was constantly fighting against each other. This lack of leadership and team dynamic was taking a tool on the work flow on the department but most of all it was affecting the patients. When I was there I could tell that some of the patients were affected by the lack of communication. Being new in this field and the department I found it difficult to witness this and not say anything.
My favorite tools from the quality improvement tools that were covered

If the manager is interested in advancing themselves; then the topic of sending them off to a motivation training program that can educate this person on how to become a better manager would be the next topic. There are a ton of programs available to assist employers on how to educate their management teams to stay focused and how to keep their team members working efficiently together. The following arrow would point to a possible hiccup which could be the manager might not be interested in participating in a program like this. At this point the management team would have to access whether to let this individual go and hire a new leader or try and persuade this person to reconsider. At this point, there could be two possibilities. They may need to hire someone new, which could be a positive thing too or they may need to spend some time with this original manager to motivate him/her to participate in this training program. Unfortunately, sometimes you cannot teach old dog new tricks. Whether the upper management has to hire someone new to replace the lead therapist or not either way the lead therapist will be required to attend a training program. Once the lead therapist has completed the required coaching, they will have to reconvene with the team and share the tools that were provided in the course. That way when the whole team sits down he/she can share all the new and exciting tools that were made available. In addition to the lead therapist, I believe it would be beneficial for the all of the therapist’s to attend a similar seminar that would provide similar tools that are more focused towards working as a team. On the flow chart the possible obstacle that could occur is that the employees may be resistant in attending a program like this. At that point the management would
The code of conduct for medical radiations practitioners outlined by the Medical Radiations Practice Board of Australia (2014) states to assist and support practitioners to deliver suitable effective services with an ethical framework to highlight elements of good practice and professional behavior amongst patient-colleague relationships. Within Section 1.2 of the code “Professional values and qualities”, states that “Practitioners must have their own beliefs and values, there are certain professional values on which practitioners are expected to prioritize their patients and safely conduct practice regardless of setting to provide best “duty of care for patients …and to practice safely and effectively “(Medical Radiation Practice Board of
I'm currently the lead unit deployment manager at Mountain Home AFB, and our team primary goal is to ensure that anyone deploying from our base have nothing to worry about besides leaving the completing their mission around the country or overseas. Our team usually consists of five members with five different personalities, five different temperaments and five different motivators. The most difficult part I face as a team lead is ensuring everyone complete their tasks in a timely manner and that each member understands their role on the team. After performing the Belbin Team Roles I got a better understanding of some of the strengths and weakness of team dynamics. Of the Belbin team roles survey I scored the highest in the Shaper, team worker
At Grinnell Regional Medical Center (GRMC), there are a variety of teams that make up the organization which includes the hospital and outpatient affiliated clinics. Due to the diversity of healthcare services that are provided at GRMC, a team leadership approach is essential to the success of the organization. According to Northouse (2016), leadership is “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (p. 6). Through this process, leaders help to create vision and direction for the team while engaging others on the team through motivation and inspiration, to reach a common goal (Northouse, 2016). In this paper, we will discuss the steps necessary to create more successful teams at various levels
A team is a type of organizational group with independent members. They share common goals and work together to meet these goals (Northouse, 2016). The organization where I work has teams at various levels for maximizing the success. These teams include, core teams, coordinating teams, patient aligned care team (PACT), contingency teams, ancillary teams, support and administration teams (Veterans Health Administration [VHA], 2015). Some of these teams have interdepartmental members while others have intradepartmental staff. Successful teams have a concrete blueprint and that contributes to their effective functioning. There are several factors that affect these teams irrespective of the level. The factors comprise the presence of a clear task, separation from non-team members, authority, and stability. The factors like working conditions, team process and bridging the gaps are concerns for the executive level. The complexity of the task, individual skills and their diverse specializations affect the selection of the team members. The team’s meaningful interactions decide their success. Independent teams can help promote friendly competition within the organization and lead to better staff performance. An efficient leader can design and launch an effective team through careful planning and selection of the right members. He/she keeps the factors that affect the success of the team in mind when designing the teams. The patient care units
Coaching Ayame even after training can boost her performance managing her project for the pharmaceutical company. Other ways management could boost Ayame’s motivation are to give her room to make her own decisions, keep her involved in what is going on in the organization or keep her posted on any changes in her project at all times. No matter what happens when Ayame is managing her project, she should still always be treated like a hero and an important part of the company or organization she is working for. Also, management should keep Ayame aware of their strategy and how they would like for her to manage her project with the pharmaceutical company, so this way Ayame knows what is expected of her and will feel more motivated to do her job (Martin, 2013).
One of the main issues impeding the efficiency and preventing successful teamwork in this situation was uncertainty with the structural design of this project team. I was more familiar (and comfortable) with a rigid chain of command structure. My belief that we should be precisely executing the stated orders of our Navy leadership created obstacles for the other team members. Other more academically inclined team members were less oriented toward this centralized structure and therefore did not comprehend my opposition to their content ideas.
“Leadership is not a vacuum” and it is very important to recognize that there are a bunch of environmental factors that can play into how well your group performs (Shankman et al 2015). Being aware of the toll that outside forces can put on your group will better prepare you for any obstacles that might be in the future of your group. The stress of the environment most assuredly has an impact on the productivity and positivity of your group and it is key to be able to recognize this. A way to be able to do this is to “get on the balcony” so that you can assess the group from a more distanced perspective (Shankman et al 2015). This will help you to be able to perform more adequately without being just as distraught as the rest of the group. As an RA, assessing the environment is extremely important because your residents will all react differently to different situations, such as
Of the liver enzymes that showed elevations in their serum concentrations following irradiation in the current study, only the early increase in the AST level was significant (Fig. 9). ALT is also a marker of hepatic damage, and it is found exclusively in the cytoplasm of cells. In contrast, AST is present in the cytoplasm, which comprises 20% of its total activity, and in the mitochondria, which comprises 80% of its total activity (Rej 1989). While the recruited granulocytes and the gamma irradiation could damage some periportal hepatocytes, irradiation treatment may have a more damaging effect on the numerous large mitochondria that reside within the hepatocytes, which would lead to a greater
As the team lead for the Computer Axial Tomography (CAT) Scan department, I was in charge of 15 technologist. In this position, I was faced with many challenges, but there was one that was a continual trial. Ours team was expected to perform more patient exams while maintaining our current staffing levels, all while providing quality service to our patients. This tested my ability to be an effective leader on many occasions. I was challenged to keep my team motivated, while doing more with less and instill pride in their work.
Due to some circumstances being out of our control, whether it is through natural means of toxicity from radiation or unnatural means of radiation, how do we protect ourselves? The Earth is covered in natural background radiation. Terrestrial, cosmic and radon radiation are all a part of our environment. Even if manmade radiation and nuclear radiation didn’t exist, we would still be exposed to toxic, unhealthy sources of biological changing substances. How do our bodies recover from an assault to our immune systems and resume a healthy life from ionizing radiation that can cause cancer? How do we become proactive, and responsible for our own health outcome? Can we eliminate from our bodies unwanted toxins, carcinogens, free radicals, and ionizing substances? Do we have control over our health after a large dose of radiation from a nuclear accident, or treatment from radiation therapy? Evidence shows that we do. Just as there are natural sources of radiation, there are natural ways to cleanse our bodies and use nutrition to detoxify, rejuvenate, and restore health when our immunity has been compromised from natural or unnatural sources of radiation.
Managing people in this day and age is now more about development and empowerment than it is about command and control. Increasingly, managers are taking a majority of the responsibility for ensuring that their staff members always have the knowledge and skills necessary to perform at the highest level possible. Managers are doing more coaching than ever before. For this reason, it is imperative that effective leaders master the skills necessary to become knowledgeable teachers and successful coaches because internal coaching is very important for the success of organizations. According to Manning & Curtis (2012), a learning organization uses six key ingredients to discover, create, and transfer knowledge and skills (P. 350). They are constantly in search of new knowledge and ways to apply it, review both successes and failures, benchmark and implement best practices, share lessons learned, reward innovation, and encourage experienced and new employees to learn to together (Manning & Curtis, 2012). Leaders who follow this tactic have a respectful attitude, build self-esteem, use the correct medium or combination of techniques, uses coaching rather than judging, and encourages repetitive practice to build proficiency (Manning & Curtis, 2012). Mary, my current manager, is a very capable
Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and other highly invasive techniques (such as surgery) are extraordinarily toxic mechanisms employed to attempt the removal or reduction of cancerous tumours and growths. Such procedures are comparably barbaric to current research areas regarding immunotherapy and targeted therapies, aiming to enhance and harness the body’s natural immune antitumour response by overwhelming tumour immune evasion and suppression mechanisms [8].
Management training consists of courses which helps managers to be organized to deal in situations an example for this is observing employees and projects. Many businesses offer this type of training themselves; it can be done in two types of ways workshops and seminars. The advantage of this is that the manager’s confidence would
Next, same type of cancer cases or interrelated ones. Not all cancers have the same mode of action physiologically, so by grouping analyses we can potentially pick up on important patterns for specific cancers. In fact, rare or cancers of one type are more likely to have a common cause (Thun, 2004). Since we have them, we can use the demographic and geographic information to analyze the incidences that happens within groups of people and areas. Finally, how can we forget about incidences over time?! The great prospect of such a state of the art and timely registry is the high capability for it to be effective in capturing cohort data moving forward. In fact, together these parameters can be used to examine if the reported cases of cancer
This team did not have in place the necessary aligned group dynamics to meet the standard of a high-performing team. In Kreitner & Kinicki, the first stage known as “Forming” states the team member should develop a mutual understanding in order to work efficiently and effectively (Pg. 274). Eric quickly formed a team of highly diverse members but good at their own field: Randy Lowerback (director of sales and marketing), Ray LaPierre of manufacturing, Maureen Turner of the design division and Carl Simmons of distribution. They all were the most capable person of what they did but working as a team, there were too many problems arose.
