Angie Thomas’ novel The Hate U Give is the story of a teenage girl facing racism in the world around her. Starr Carter lives in Garden Heights, a neighborhood filled with gangs, when one of her best friends Khalil is shot by the police, she is quick to know he had been killed because of the racism that exists in our world. Throughout the novel, Starr is constantly trying to show the world why Khalil died in order to get justice for his death. She does not believe he deserved to die or the cop who shot Khalil deserves to walk free of the crime he committed. Through different characters, the author is able to convey the message of one should not form opinions on someone or something based on stereotypes. Throughout the novel, some characters struggle with judging people before they know their past. Angie Thomas is able to get this across to readers not only through Starr, but also characters such as her father Maverick, her friends from school, and even Officer Cruise, the officer who killed Khalil.
Stereotypes in the novel are one of the main causes for Khalil's death. The officer had killed Khalil because he had automatically assumed Khalil was a threat to him. Officer Cruise treated both Khalil and Starr with disrespect at the time of the arrest because they are African American. When Khalil began to move in order to ask Starr if she was okay, the Officer assumed he was reaching for a weapon because he had already formed an opinion about Khalil based on his skin color even
Racism; a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. In the historical fiction novel, Midnight Without a Moon, by Linda Williams Jackson, the author shows how horribly blacks were treated when they tried to vote. The main character, Rose Lee Carter, battles with understanding why blacks were facing such repercussions while trying to fight for their rights. Levi Jackson, Reverend George W. Lee, and Lamar Smith face several acts of racism while trying to vote, and because of this, they are brutally murdered. However, the reader is left wondering if the punishments the characters received actually occurred in real life. In Midnight Without a Moon, the author uses history by including key details to emphasize how far whites were willing to go in order to ensure that blacks wouldn’t be allowed to vote, while at times altering it to highlight the intense feelings Rose has over the situation.
Racism will always be an issue and will always be considered inevitable due to society. Racism is said to be morally wrong because no one is born racist, they are taught. The ideals of a group are thought to be forms of extrinsic racism which lead to morally problematic intentions. Utilitarianism is ultimately the one way to prevent the consequences and effects of racism, as Kantian ethics follow it up by defining its moral rule.
Ever since she was a child, Piper received some sort of ostracism because of her racial identity. She once rebuked an art critic that declared, “it is crucial to know that…Piper is a black artist who can easily ‘pass for white,” to which she responded, “’black’ and ‘white’ are among the terms my work critiques” (Bowles 1). She expressed her feelings not only about how people view her, but also how people view black people in general. This is seen in her pieces such as “The Mythic Being: I/You” and “Political Self-Portrait #2”. In Berger’s “Critique of Pure Racism” interview, Piper asserted that while she finds analysis of racism praiseworthy, she wants her artwork to help people confront their racist views (Bowles 6).
Racism is not a factor of the heart, according to Tommie Shelby in “Is Racism in the ‘Heart’?” He writes “the ‘heart’ does not have to be involved in order for an action or institution to be racist” (483). Instead, Shelby argues that racism is based on the effect of a person’s actions on deepening racist institutions or promulgating the oppression of a particular group of people based on their race. The individual intention of a person or the “purity” or his or her heart does not take precedence over the effect of his or her actions. Shelby’s argument is constructed as follows: Individual beliefs can be true or false but not inherently immoral. Therefore, it is not appropriate to morally condemn someone for holding a particular belief.
At the Concert for Hurricane Relief on September 2, 2005, Kanye West famously declared that “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people.” The controversial statement, made after Kanye explained how he hated the way Black victims of Hurricane Katrina were portrayed in the media, became a catchphrase for the anti-Black racism that was seen as being a major cause of the lack of federal response and aid for the Black victims. The debate as to whether or not the disastrous response to Hurricane Katrina was at all a result of racism became heightened as some saw Kanye’s statement as being factual and powerful while others perceived it as being inflammatory and incorrect. For Walter Benn Michaels, author of The Trouble with Diversity, Kanye’s claim
Stop Kiss by Diana Son illustrates a hate crime, stemming from two different individuals with an unlikely and compassionate love story in New York City. The hate crime creates waves within the play itself, which has alternating scenes between Callie and Sara, the two protagonists, before and after the homophobic attack. Callie, a traffic control reporter for a TV news station, lives in a spacious and perpetually messy New York City apartment. However, according to Callie herself, she isn’t a legitimate news journalist and basically has nothing else under her belt. Sara, an elementary school teacher from St. Louis, moves to New York for a more demanding job in the Bronx.
It can be when someone’s car gets pulled over, and when they get out the car, they are treated like a criminal. Khalil was a teenage boy when he was shot and killed, and then his passenger, Starr, his best friend from childhood, was held at gunpoint by the very same officer. This may have happened in a book, but somewhere, it has happened in real life. In the book, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, a high-schooler named Starr is dealing with the hardships of her life. Hardships in the United States of America caused by racism and fear of not conforming, as can be seen by how Starr acts at school when Hailey makes racist/callous remark, and Khalil’s murderer.
Firstly, Teachers should be able to teach the book The Hate You Give because it teaches about a great, relevant memorandum or issue. The biggest theme showed in The Hate You Give is speaking up for what you believe in, even if you are putting yourself in harms way. Starr shows this theme by going on television and speaking out about the death of khalil, her childhood friend. Teacher should use this book to show a life scenario.

During the Great Depression, racism and prejudice were the cause of suffering for many people who were greatly affected by discriminating thoughts. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Maycomb County is a town also filled with the evils of racism of prejudice, but that immorality is often hidden by certain of acts of courage and goodness enacted by the citizens of Maycomb. In her novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee portrays the importance of courage through characters Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Jean Louise (Scout) Finch, who all persevere through the path of rightness in the face of prejudiced and disapproving opinions, without worrying about the consequences of their actions. Atticus’ decision to defend Tom Robinson brings many disapprovals from others but he still continues to fight for him, although he knows that there is a high chance of Tom Robinson being doomed because of his race. Mrs. Dubose exemplifies courage because even though it costs her life and invited bad thoughts from others, she stays determined to get free of her addiction. Scout, an innocent, young girl, shows courage by defending what she thinks is right, although the consequences may not be good for her.

So let's take a look at the three cultural conflicts In Glory Road, the first being colored people versus white people, second is a poor school versus rich school, and lastly players versus coach.
Young adult literature such as The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, emphasizes teenagers using both their actions and their voices to overcome injustices such as racial inequality and police brutality. Racial inequality and police brutality is discussed greatly throughout The Hate U Give, due to the difficulties the protagonist, Starr Carter, endures when her best friend, Khalil, is killed because of him being African American and situated in an unsafe neighborhood. Starr embraces an inner conflict with herself in regards to speaking up and taking action against the presented injustices she constantly faces. The author, Laura M. Robinson, of Girlness and Guyness: Gender Trouble in Young Adult Literature thoroughly explains why adolescents are
After the recent shootings in the African-American community, we cannot go one day without hearing about random acts of violence on our fellow police officers’. Hate and racial discrimination are only one of the many concerns I have for humanity today. After reading the editorial “What happens when a white officer shoots a black man, but no one releases a video”, it leaves me with disappointment and hurt Although, the world has always had good and evil, as a parent, it makes me concerned for the future of my children.
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, discusses many problems in the south around the 1930s. Atticus and his children live in Maycomb Alabama, struggling to get by financially. In the town of Maycomb Alabama, Harper Lee explains and tells the stories connected to harsh racism, segregation, and injustice. The main story in this book expresses an unfair tria for a african american man accused of rape by a white women. He gets taken advantage of my many people in this book because of his race, this is one of many examples that i will discuss in more detail. Racism has been occurring for many many decades, it seems to be way worse in the south and segregation has played a huge role in the act of racism. Most of the southern towns including Maycomb have strict laws and rules to abide by for segregation and racism witch mentally and physically affects the people of different race everywhere. The topic of racism is very important to me and i believe that there needs to be actions to help and come close to fixing it. The main racism point i will cover in this writing is segregation, Tom Robinson, Dolphis Raymond, Calpurnia, Atticus and his kids.
