In communities where there are heavy percentages of racial and ethnic minorities, racial profiling can cause a gap between them and law enforcement departments. Communities and officers work better together if they are in a positive relationship. However, when the two parties are at odds with each other due to racial profiling, it diminishes the ability to find criminals and probe crimes and also minimizes belief in these agencies (Head). What racial profiling specifically does is cause a central problem to minority communities: trust. When there is trust between people, organizations, or other groups, there develops the power to cooperate and actually move forward. In a simple racial profiling case, an officer arrests an African American male
To the supporters, racial profiling makes perfect sense and is a rational law enforcement strategy (Harris, 2003). Furthermore, supporters do not acknowledge the effects racial profiling has not only on people who belong to these groups, but on the relations between police and the communities they serve. Today policing strategies which center on community policing and racial profiling only alienates people from the police and causes deep seeded mistrust. Failure to acknowledge the racial context of the law and its enforcement will only increase the racial disparities that already exist in all aspects of criminal justice (Johnson, 2003).
I seriously don't understand what is wrong with some of these officers where they think this type of thing is alright. It takes 4 years for the lawyer to learn the law and become the professionals they are. So why should officers; the people first on the scene require far less to be given their jobs?
This happens frequently in law enforcement causing conflicts between the law enforcements and citizens. In law enforcement, racial profiling is a problem because of the shootings that keep occurring. Most of the shooting that occur happen to be black or hispanics males being harmed. Minorities are more likely to be treated by law enforcement with suspicion. For example, for police sometimes race determines what people to stop and frisk. The police are stopping only people of certain races more than others to conduct these searches, when that is not supposed to be the case.
This source discusses the topic of not the race of the citizens being suspected, but the one in question is the officer’s race and if it is one of the major factors pertaining to the problem of racial profiling. The authors’ main stance is that, although throughout history, the influence of race is certainly a factor in the citizens’ perceptions of the police; the influence of the race of the officer also plays as a major factor in police behavior when looking at the study’s results. A finding that the authors’ have discovered is that Black officers interact differently towards Black citizens compared to when White officers do, therefore maybe increasing the amount of Black officers would be better for the community. However, other authors
Police enforcement targeting minorities based on the color of their skin and not by evidence of unlawful doing is racial profiling. Today, racial profiling among law enforcement has become a controversial topic throughout the nation. A recent event in Ferguson, Missouri, Michael Brown, an unarmed black teen, was shot and killed by a white police officer. The shooting caused major racial tension among the black community and mistrust in police. Michael’s death has lead to weeks of protest in which the officers responded with tear gas and rubber bullets and curfews for citizens. It’s wrong to target an individual due to the color of their skin, however, racial profiling is a procedure used by law enforcement regularly. This study focuses on racial profiling, how race and ethnicity play a major role in police stops and how it’s caused a major distrust in police. The studies expose racial profiling being used on racial minority groups in traffic stops, tasers use, based on assumptions that may be false.
story. In more extreme cases though. Racial profiling by the police has caused many deaths among African American people. And as expected these problems caused a huge scandal. And also made people ask themselves if the police is they're friend or enemy on the streets. Racial profiling occurs mainly because of your attire and your skin color, and includes unnecessary incarceration.

This paper discusses the establishment of terrorism as a crime that can be committed domestically has changed policing, how and why it has changed policing, along with examples. Next, this paper explores whether or not the number of victims of racial profiling has increased over the last decade. This paper also discusses the laws and services which are available for victims of racial profiling. What other actions might be taken on behalf of victims of racial profiling will also be explored in this paper. Lastly, has the Department of Homeland Security helped fight terrorism, or has it simply duplicated the efforts and jurisdictions of other agencies and how has it helped, will be discussed in this paper.
What is racial profiling? The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) defines racial profiling as “the discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual’s race, ethnicity, religion or national origin” (2005). Do not confuse racial profiling with criminal profiling; criminal profiling is usually practiced by police in which they use a group of characteristics that are associated with crime to target individuals (ACLU, 2005). Examples of racial profiling include using ones race to target specific drivers for traffic violations and pedestrians for illegal contraband; another prime example is the targeting of Muslims, Arabs, and South Asians since 9/11 in regards to minor immigrant violations without any connection to the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon (ACLU, 2005). Without a doubt, racial profiling occurs on a daily basis all over the world; however let’s focus on racial profiling in the United States and specifically right here in our homeland, Michigan. Background & History
The National Institute of Justice (“Racial Profiling”) stated that racial profiling, which is a form of discrimination, racism, and stereotypes is when law enforcement, based on a person’s race, ethnicity, national origin, or religion targets a person for suspicion of crimes. Today people can turn on their television, go online, and even listen to their radios and they will hear about racial profiling. Racial profiling is not anything new and has been going on throughout history; it goes all the way back to slavery. Racial profiling has recently started being recorded, which is why it has become such a huge national issue today, because people can no longer ignore it. This issue is not specific to one race, religion, ethnicity, or national origin. People of many races, religions, ethnicities, or national origins have been affected by racial profiling for years since the start of this country, but one group that has been affected by racial profiling at a high rate is African Americans. The goal of this paper is to analyze this main group that has and still is being affected by racial profiling and acknowledge other groups that are being affected as well.
Racial Profiling was the topic I choose to do my personal project on. I selected this topic because I wanted to bring awareness about racial profiling and the lives it has affected. Plus around the time personal projects started multiple incidents of cops’ shooting African Americans had taken place. The statistics of African Americans being arrested for a crime that they have not committed are immensely high. This topic interests me because I want to be a lawyer; furthermore, a lawyer gives the voiceless a voice and by me spreading awareness about racially profiling I am giving them a voice. Another reason I am was interested in this topic is because I am an African American who gets racially profiled. However before I started this project I knew about racial profiling and heard
One major problem with the Justice System is that law enforcement use racial profiling affecting many people of color on a daily basis. Racial profiling is when law enforcement believe that certain groups are more likely to commit a crime rather than other groups. This is a major problem because in many cases there are very tragic incidents and as NAACP stated, “ Mr. Garner’s tragic death shows that for communities of color, including women and LGBT people of color, immigrants and low income communities, racial profiling has been and continues to be a constant reality of life, often with tragic and deadly consequences,” (45) Explains how racial profiling has become an everyday basis to minorities affecting them in many ways and unfortunately ends with death occasionally. Racial profiling is a huge dilemma
To what extent can race, ethnicity, and national origin be used in targeting suspects for stops, searches, and arrests? This has become a growing concern of many since the tragic terrorist acts that took place on September 11th, 2001. Previously looked upon as unethical and almost universally condemned, the use of profiles based solely on race to identify possible terrorists is getting a second look. Both proponents and opponents are looking at the legitimacy and necessity of this practice. The United States has fought a long and difficult battle against racism and discrimination. Lives have been lost and many liberties have been infringed upon in the search for racial equality. Now that the 21st century as arrived, a large
Benjamin Todd Jealous once said, “Racial profiling punishes innocent individuals for the past actions of those who look and sound like them. It misdirects crucial resources and undercuts the trust needed between law enforcement and the communities they serve.”(Jealous, 2015). I couldn’t agree more with him. In today’s society more and more Black men and women suffer from police bias. Police is a powerful organization that was meant to serve and protect. Enforce laws and keeping communities safe. The problem is we fail to acknowledge that police are humans with real life bias. The problem with police is how much racial profiling is going up,
Just what is racial profiling? Racial profiling is a law enforcement and security agency practice that encourages officers to stop, search, and investigate people based on race, ethnicity, nationality or religion. While racial profiling is most commonly committed against ethnic minorities, many instances of racial profiling occur in reaction to specific crimes, making any racial or cultural group subject to more intensive scrutiny by the authorities. (ebscohost.com) This is what I think bout racial profiling, it like it occurs when the police targets someone for investigation on the basis of that person's race, national origin, or ethnicity. Examples are the use of race to determine which drivers to stop for minor traffic
