Prologue
One year ago –
All was quiet within in the Forest of Forever Winter, the snow descended from the dark moon lit sky. Snow builds in the branches of the many dark skeletal trees. Treading through the snow filled path was a shrouded figure wearing black and blue garments beneath a slightly tattered navy blue cloak with black inner lining, billowing in the breeze. The lower half of his face was obscured by a black mask and his eyes hidden beneath the hood. Strapped across his back is a Daitō with a lock attached to the sheath and the latch hooked to the guard.
The figure treaded through the snow filled path until the sound of a snapping twig and faint growls coming from behind stopped him in his tracks. Taking the moment to listen noises he came to the obvious conclusion. There was no mistaking those sounds…Beowolves, he thought to himself. As the next twig snapped he un-holstered a pair of old and battered flintlock pistols. Both are fitted with box magazines with barrel length bayonets in front of the trigger guards.
Soon coming from behind the trees and foliage was a large black werewolf-like creature with outer bone white spikes, armor, and mask adorned with blood red designs and eyes. It was a Beowolf, one of the many variations of the “Creatures of Grimm”. The Beowolf held its head high followed by a load roar and charged him on all fours.
The hunter squeezed the trigger, the first flintlock fired a whistling flair that struck its intended target head on; the
We all have hidden inner conflicts that we have buried deep within our souls. In the story “Hunters in the Snow written” by Tobias Wolff he gives us greater understanding of what adults experience and the extreme limits that people will go through just to be accepted, the author stimulates our senses with the use of very descriptive examples using figurative language. The writer uses weather for the overall setting of the story “Tub waited for an hour in the falling snow”. The setting which the author obviously uses weather takes place during the winter; this determines that there is some darkness and cold death possibly being present.
They praise sir Beowulf, thanking him greatly. Yet little did this town or Beowulf know the agony yet to come. Grendel was indeed a monster, but a monster who was the spawn of a cruel creature. The slain monster’s mother, a she-wolf would be the hero’s next challenge. He would travel to the home of the monster’s mother, to yet again engage in the act of battle. They shall meet in the deep depths of the marshy hell. Beowulf would try to defeat the she-wolf with his sword but would not be enough. As he begins to become beaten, and weak, he sees a sword that may be to his advantage. “A heavy sword, hammered by giants, strong and blessed by their magic, the best of all weapons but so massive that no ordinary man could lift its carved and decorated length” (page 54 line 530-535) He raised thy mighty sword and struck the devil in the neck, cutting the entire head off. Hrothgar’s men watch the monster’s lake filled with blood. Thinking all hope and gone and mighty Beowulf had been killed. Yet as the old men begin to whisper the mighty hero rises from the lake, only holding the she-wolfs head and the giant’s sword. The Beowulf would return with the head and place the monsters head in front of the
He then slashed at it with his sword. At that instant he dropped his sword because it was doing no damage to the monster. He raised the beast and threw her to the floor. But she rose and began slashing at him, he fell to the ground. She drew her dagger and was ready to avenge her son but Beowulf’s chain mail saved him. Beowulf got back on his feet and grabbed a sword that was hanging on the wall it looked like it was hammered by the gods. He lifted it over his head and stuck the beast with all the strength he had left in his body. He ripped through bone and all. Beowulf rose from the water and all the Geats stood there
Beowulf continued to listen about how this monster was described, he was interested and wanted to challenge this big bad monster to kill him. The king gave a room for Beowulf and his man to rest because tomorrow they would begin to plan their trap to kill Grendel. As everyone slept Beowulf stayed awake as he kept plotting for his trap to kill Grendel. The next morning Beowulf and this man were with the king they were given weapons to use against Grendel but Beowulf didn't know that no weapon could kill Grendel unless it was the big sword that was hammered by
Ulrich turns to Georg with great silence. Georg seemed to be in fear and struggling to get free, yet Ulrich has a plain face, staring at his rifle. Georg then yells, “What are we going to do!” Ulrich keeps his silence as he begins to reach for the rifle, Georg beginning to panic. The wolves creep closer to the men, Ulrich glancing at them for a few seconds then back at his rifle. Ulrich then lays a finger on the stock of the rifle and slowly pulls it closer, Georg calling out to Ulrich in great panic. “ Why are you so quiet!” Georg yelled. “Planning” replied Ulrich. Ulrich finally grasps onto the handle of the rifle and pulls the receiver back, taking a quick glance at the bullet inside then closes it. The men can then hear the growls of the wolves, then Georg is filled with fear and goes silent. Ulrich takes his aim at
There is someone or something that lives deep in the fen that comes to attack Hall Herot. Beowulf takes on some of the most powerful monsters that
Then the fiend step nearer,(558-564).” Beowulf still sat unfrightend by what occurs and waits for the right moment to attack Grendel. He approaches Grendel after the consumption of the man and grabs his arm and begins to crush it with his hand. “His courage fled; but he found no escape! He was fain to be gone; he would flee to the darkness,(571-572).” Beowulf full of rage and anger began to beat this monster with his bare hands. “And Beowulf gained the glory of battle. Grendel, fated, fled to the fens, to his joyless dwelling, sick unto death,(632-634).” Beowulf without fear or hesitation fought this monster and won. This beast had killed many men at a single time, but Beowulf’s courage let him prevail in a situation where fear takes over the hearts of many men.
Beowulf immediately sets out to track the “she-wolf”, as she is referred to in the poem (574), while the other warriors show cowardice. Beowulf shows great courage and dares to face the evil that no man has ever faced before. During the battle with the ferocious mother, conventional tactics prove to be useless. Beowulf’s sword hrunting could not pierce her skin. On the contrary, Beowulf seems to be relying more on equipment than previously as shown in the epic, “She welcomed him with her claws, clutched at him savagely but could not harm him, tried to work her fingers through the tight ring-woven mail on his breast, but tore and scratched in vain.” (578-582). This shows that Beowulf is growing more towards the old and wise king that he later becomes. The battle concludes when Higlac’s follower uses a magic sword that “appeared” on the wall to defeat Grendel’s mother. His trophy here is Grendel’s head, of which he brings back to the king to show the people that the battle has been
Another trait that is needed to make a supernatural horror film is the “unknown” evil. This trait is present as the antagonist or “bad guy” in the film, but usually is not a person. The “unknown” evil is the unseen glimpses of the effect of a demon or ghost. The importance of the “unknown” evil is for the hints or fragments of dangerous, life-threatening occurrences that happen to the characters. In the film Insidious, the “unknown” evil is the unexplainable coma Dalton is in.
“Then when darkness had dropped, Grendel went up to Herot, wondering what the warriors would do in that hall when their drinking was done. He found them sprawled in sleep, suspecting nothing , their dreams undisturbed. The monsters thoughts were as quick as his greed or his claws: He slipped through the door and there in silence snatched up thirty men, smashed them, unknowing in their beds and ran out with their bodies, blood dripping behind him, back to his lair, delighted with his nights slaughter (Narrator pg. 42 lines 30-40)”. Beowulf is a folk epic translated by Burton Raffel. Its a story about a hero with the strengths of a bear and a wolf called to a desperate town to defeat vicious monsters who have been tormenting them for the past
I awoke from my nap with a jolt. There was a man stabbing his sword over and over again into my belly. What is with these people and swords? He yelled out that his name was Beowulf but all I could do was howl in pain. “Please stop!” I screamed but he didn’t stop. That made me very angry and so I pushed him off and prepared to fight. We fought for a long time before he finally defeated me and as my world slowly went black all I could hear was the tapping off claws and then my mother’s
In the year 476 A.D, the Christian era of the Western Roman empire came to a close. What followed would be a series of Germanic Kingdoms such as the Visigoths, Angles, and Saxons. These kingdoms, like most budding nations, founded their own unique political systems, laying the groundwork for future European nations. Although these kingdoms were deemed “independent”, they still found themselves under the jurisdiction of the Church. This subjected them to the political model of the Church, and by extension Rome.
The coat of armor I adorned, made of down feathers and a nylon shell, yielded no protection against the daggers of that cold winter air. As I peered out toward the horizon, I saw nothing but tree tops, and some snow capped mountain tops in the distance. With my feet bound to freshly waxed skis, the only thing stronger than my ski poles was my determination to get down the mountain.
I perched myself up in a tree stand overlooking a massive river valley. This is the place where deer come down and across in order to get to the fields for feeding. The towering tree stand soared over many small trees. I glanced over the railing, looking down at the snowy forest floor many feet below. It was a frightening height. “Pull your gun up. I’ll work my way back around to try and push some deer
