, written by Sharon M. Draper, Amari, who is a 15 year olds girl, lives in Africa with her mother, father, brother, and her soon to be husband Besa. At the beginning of the book she is happy and outgoing, but throughout the novel her character beings to change to a sorrowful person. Her character changes due to being taken from her family, getting abused and raped, and her being separated from Besa. Amari and her family live in a small village, Ziavi, with many other Africans. In the result of her refusing to go, he slapped her and she was pulled off the stage and dragged across the courtyard and forced into the back of the wagon. She was also abused when they was going to mr. Derbys house after the slave sale and Amari was in the corner of the wagon sniffling quietly and mr. Derby yelled her saying “quit that sniveling” and then he leaned over the side of the wagon and slapped her sharply. Another time she was abused is when she was going to give mr. Derby a plate and he tripped her and she had fell and spilled everything. He called her a “stupid Black Wench” and he began to repeatedly hit her with a whip. She was raped by clay. Mr Derby said “they like it when you pick hem out for special favors at night. It keeps them happy and... And reminds them in a very special way who is the master and who is the slave.” Almost every night he would send tidbit out to go get her from the little shack and to be sent to his room. This changes her character because in her hometown she was happy, and now that she's being abused it's making her sad.
She was soon to be married to Besa and now she doesn't even see him and she's being raped
This is proof that this terrible act was very typical within slaveholding societies. Now, just because this relationship seems usual in the south, it does not mean everyone condoned it. The wives of many slave owners proved they were not okay with a white male and a black female relationship by the way they acted with “anger and resentment” towards other slaves (McLaurin, 26). Wives chose to ignore this behavior simply because if they didn’t, not only would their lives be in danger, but so would their children’s.
