Quietness is not to be mistaken as shyness. In fact the exact definition of quiet is to make no noise or sound, especially no disturbing sound (Dictionary.com). While shyness is defined as, being reserved or having or showing nervousness, timidity in the company of other people (Encyclopedia.com). You cannot group the shy within the quiet. Nicholas Christenfeld, a psychology professor at the University of California, San Diego stated, "There are people who wish to talk, but are too timid to do so" as well, there are those who,"simply choose not to say much (Weeks)." The quiet hold a presence of unknown power, they can quiet a whole room with one sound and make you admit your deep secrets just fill one second of silence.

For instance, take one of the characters from To Kill A Mockingbird, Arthur “Boo” Radley. Throughout the entire novel he only utters a mere five words, “Will you take me home?” yet it seems that most of the novel revolves around him. It is this very characteristic?? that adds to the fact that those who do not speak are still feared?? Although most of the town in the novel, Maycomb, has never laid eyes on the allusive Boo Radley they still fear him, and create rumors about how he eats cats and mice, and spies on the townsfolk. The aura surrounding Boo gives him power, power created by fear, but nonetheless …show more content…
It seems that the most remembered of our leaders are those who stood with the smallest of personalities, the ones who had few words to say. But the words they did speak changed our worldviews forever. Take Rosa Parks, an American Civil Rights Activist, she did not use anything but her words to speak for her. When refused to give up her bus seat for a white passenger she unknowingly started an uprise towards the bus system of Montgomery, Alabama. As Professor Mia Bay of Rutgers University aptly summarized, “Rosa Parks’ story tells us you don’t have to always have been a leader to do something important and to make an impact, and you don’t have to be a big a personality or a loud person to take a stand. You can be a quiet person of principles, and these quiet people who work behind the scenes are important to social change.”(Van Luling). There are many more examples set throughout history of people who gained power from their quiet
Odysseus from The Odyssey, written by Homer, and Martin Luther King Jr; the civil rights leader who can be credited as the man who lead to the end of segregation are both notable leaders. They were very different in many ways but they also had similarities. What do they have in common? They both had great qualities shown by great and inspiring leaders; bravery, intelligence, loyalty, and perseverance. Although Martin Luther King Jr. was humble and Odysseus showed hubris they both were effective leaders because of their courageousness, willingness to fight for their beliefs and outspokenness.
How does a man chosen to lead a cause do it effectively? This is the question that struck two leaders when they were selected to be leaders. These people were Odysseus from Homer’s The Odyssey, and Martin Luther King Jr. who lead the civil rights movement. Despite living in different time periods, they were similar in their leading styles.
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." This inspirational quote came from the sixth president of the United States of America named, John Quincy Adams.
How well known people are effects how influential you are, and while these 2 characters from history are not as influential as LeBron James and trending pop starts are in their time, they’ve used their influential abilities in positive ways that affects everyone today. Susan B. Anthony and Martin Luther King Jr. are both amazing leaders of the suffrage and civil rights movements. Anthony with Women’s rights, and King with African American’s rights took Civil Rights as a whole a few great leaps forward; brought forth an era where the Civil Rights Movement is something almost everyone believes in, that equal rights should be something everyone has. In these great leaps forward, King and Anthony have used their influential abilities to help
There are many people in this world that are influential. These people fight for what they believe in, they go after what they want, and go past obstacles that they face. An individual that shows these traits would be the 40th president of the United States of America, Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan is influential because of his beliefs, he fought for what he thought could be a better America, he also went after what he wanted which was to become 40th president of the United States, he also went past obstacles in his life one obstacle that he faced was winning his 2nd term Ronald Reagan, our 40th president, made our country better.
Dr. King was a leader with a distinct presence: he was known nationwide as a man with true professional bearing, always carrying himself with dignity. He insisted that both he and those involved in protests and demonstrations “conduct [their] struggle on the high plane of dignity
The texts read throughout the entire year allowed me to find similarities between them and discover that a major theme depicted in the texts was the silence of one’s voice. In addition to the texts, through personal experiences I was able to derive that silence is a serious issue amongst us. I used To Kill a Mockingbird because the book clearly shows how someone who has been marginalized can lose their voice even in court where supposedly all men are equal. Tom Robinson, an African American who is accused of rape says to the prosecutor “were you so scared that she'd hurt you, you ran, a big buck like you? No suh, I's scared I'd be in court, just like I am now. Scared of arrest, scared you'd have to face up to what you did? No suh, scared I'd hafta face up to what I didn't do (Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird).” Tom Robinson is aware that he is an outcast in the town of Maycomb and he also understands his voice is worthless anywhere.
The town of Maycomb has created a horrible label for him because of his parents and social issues. Many people think as Jem, Scout and Dill that, “judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained (...) There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time” (16) all because of the stories they heard around. Boo Radley shows the theme of coexistence of good and evil, because no one knew who he was so they made up horrible rumours by pure ignorance although he is nothing of a monster as people describe. He turns out to be a protective, shy and caring person at the end of the book protecting Jem and Scout from Bob
“It doesn't matter how strong your opinions are, if you don't use your power for positive change, you are indeed part of the problem”(A Quote by Coretta Scott King) Coretta Scott King devoted her life to positive change and was never content to stay silent when she saw injustice. Coretta Scott King was an amazing African-American woman who persevered through many struggles to play a big role in the Civil Rights Movement and carry on her husband's legacy.
Take Rosa Parks, she didn’t go to the authorities with her bus seat problem, she just took it to the black community, and they took it upon themselves to do something about it. She wanted to do something about the racism problem, but didn’t want it to be cruel, but just gentle and subtle. By boycotting buses, that didn’t give the buses much money because mainly blacks road the buses. This showed the government that something needed to be changed in society. So eventually they changed the law about blacks having to give up their seat for a white person, because they weren’t making a profit and the community was causing
For example, when Scout, Jem, and Dill tried to take a look inside the Radley house and Jem lost his pants, but when Jem came back to get them they were sewed up by Boo. This tells how Boo knew that the kids were scared, and Boo knew it was the kids, so he sewed them up. But because the kids do not know anything about Boo Radley, they accuse him of being a scary person. In addition, when Boo Radley starts placing items in the knot hole in the tree because he is kind and likes the kids, but is thought to be strange and suspicious. Boo Radley is a kind and harmless figure, but is thought to be a weird scary man.
From the vantage point of the present, it is easy to look back at the tenure of any great leader and draw conclusions about just what it was that made him/her great. We can examine the circumstances under which their leadership flourished; piece together what we know of their character and personality traits; delve into the factors that may have driven them; and dissect their leadership style all in an effort to pinpoint the source of their success. The ‘Great Man’ theory, popular in the 19th century and now thoroughly debunked, held that leaders are born, not made; suggesting that men like George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., and Winston Churchill were born with the innate capacity to change the world (Landis,
Our world is filled with many successful leaders. The gift of being a leader can be learned; however some individuals have a natural born talent to be a leader. Each leader has his or her own unique leadership style. The gift of being a leader can be learned. Certain individuals are born with a charismatic style and can easily be a leader. A successful leader is one who can inspire and motivate people towards a goal. Martin Luther King Jr. was an individual with a born gift to lead people. The following paper will discuss how Martin Luther King Jr. was able to inspire and motivate people with his effective leadership style.
In chapter six; Jem and Dill’s’ inquisitive’ natures lead them to become rebellious. Their plan was to trespass into Boo Radley’s property in order to understand more about the personality of this ‘mysterious’ character. Scout joins them on their night-time exploration because she is afraid of being left out. Due to the nature in which they entered the house, Nathan Radley-Boo Radley’s brother shoots at them as he thought his house was attacked by burglars. In chapter six of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, Harper Lee cleverly uses a variety of literary techniques and devices to create tension prior to the shooting. This essay discusses the language devices used and its effectiveness on the reader of the text. The techniques that Harper Lee
Countless times leaders operate on instinct that has grown from what they have seen in the past. What leaders see others do sets the stage for what they may do in the future. A leader of sound character will exhibit that character at all times.” (p. 7-13)
