Mathematics to me, is complex numbers with only one correct answer involving numbers and other unknown variables. There are formulas where you plug numbers into and solving for the x variable. I would consider myself somewhat good at math I do not always get a concept right away but I will work through the difficulty until I discover how to understand the concept at hand. I will study and persevere until the challenge at hand is resolved. Usually, I am a quick learner which allows me to understand math fairly quickly and at a easy rate. However, there are some parts of math that come more naturally to me than others. For example, in precalculus I found graphing more straight forward and easy to understand. Where as with trigonomic functions where I had to make both sides equal the same functions I tended to get confused quicker. This happened because there were multiple ways to get to the same answer and multiple answers so I felt like there was no one correct way. There was lots of variation and flexibility and there was less structure so it went against the usual ways I learn math. I was forced to change the way I had traditionally learned math. To learn math means that you are being shown daily applications such as keeping track of money, figuring out a budget, seeing how much space you have in your room, and so forth. Going into high school, I wasn’t sure if I was ever going to learn how to write checks or do anything financially since there were no classes available to do so. Being a teenager growing up I would always say something like “what’s the point of math class if we aren’t going to learn how to write checks or learn anything about our future with money.” Little did I know when we became seniors, there was a class that we could take to learn. I have learned from my own personal experience that you must keep up with the Instructor: attend class, read the text and do homework every day. Falling a day behind puts you at a disadvantage. Falling a week behind puts you in deep trouble.

These classes have taught me to know how much of a product I can buy with a certain amount of money (Harris). Basics in algebra can help calculate sales, proportions, ratios, and percentages (Harris). Algebra can be used in cooking, calculating loans, or mortgage payments (Harris). Math helps us think logically and learn how to solve problems in different ways. It helps our brain grow and we become smarter from it. We learn how to organize information because of it. In Mathematics, it is rare that a new branch of mathematics is introduced. That means that even branches of math that have been around for hundreds of years are still technically new, or at least relatively new. One such branch of mathematics is probability. Probability is only three hundred to four hundred years old, so it easily falls into this category when compared to branches of mathematics such as Geometry which dates back all the way to ancient Egypt in around 2900 BC, when it first became important when an Egyptian pharaoh wanted to tax farmers who raised crops along the Nile River. Mathematics, like every creation of man, have evolved without really knowing how far you can get with them: the scope of the computer, physics, chemistry, algebra, all are evidence of this. Every aspect of our culture is based in some way or another in Mathematics: language, music, dance, art, sculpture, architecture, biology, daily life. All these areas of measurements and calculations are accurate. Even in nature, everything follows a precise pattern and a precise order: a flower, a shell, a butterfly, day and night, the seasons. All this makes mathematics essential for human life and they can not be limited only to a matter within the school curriculum; here lies the importance of teaching math in a pleasure, enjoyable and understandable way. Mathematics is an aid to the development of the child and should be seen as an aid to life and not as an obstacle in their lifes.
Mathematics is a theory that developed overtime and that it has been made from many contributors who have discover many different types of branches that go under mathematics. For example, some of the concepts in mathematics are algebra, calculus, geometry, trigonometry as well as many others. According to the dictionary “Merriam Webster” the definition of Mathematics is the “science of numbers and their operations interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations.” Society has created mathematics the building block for everything in our daily activities. Math is involved from little to the food that we consume to the way we communicate with one another. Math is very important despite that many believe that their daily activities do not require any of the formulas or equations thought to them, they are completely wrong.
A philosophy of mathematics should be included in an excellent philosophy of education. A philosophy of mathematics should include your thoughts and ideas about what mathematics education is, what impact it has on society, the qualities that make a good teacher, a teacher’s role, research on the standards and instructional strategies, and ways to ensure student are able to learn mathematic concepts in your classroom. Each of these ideas should forever be evolving because we grow as teachers our thought and ideas will grow. I will be discussing my thoughts and ideas on what creates an excellent philosophy of mathematics.
In today’s society mathematics is a vital part of day-to-day life. No matter what a person is doing at home or at the workplace, he/she is constantly using different mathematics skills to simply function. Then what does this mean for mathematics education? When someone needs to utilize a skill every day then he/she needs a strong background in the skill. Therefore, today’s students need more than a just a working knowledge of mathematics or enough knowledge to pass a test. Today’s students need to understand how mathematics works and how to utilize mathematics skills in the best way possible.
