I would be a good candidate for placing the wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier because my grandfather is a Vietnam war veteran and I would be the second generation to lay the wreath at the tomb. While my grandfather had been serving in Vietnam, he was shot in the chest. He had not slept for 2 days after in fear of never being able to wake up again. He was awarded the Purple Heart and is immensely proud of his service. My mother wrote the winning essay for the wreath laying her 8th grade year at Butler Junior High. I believe that my connections to not only what the tomb represents, but the actual tomb itself makes me a worthy candidate for laying the wreath at the unknown soldier.

Obviously, the Tomb of the Unknown is heavily guarded at all times, even during the atrocious weather that comes upon Washington, D.C. In the year of 1948, the Third Infantry, also known as the Old Guard, had received the responsibility of guarding the most important tomb in Arlington National Cemetery. The Third Infantry is very important because it is the only infantry unit allowed to march with bayonets on the rifles. Primarily, the Third Infantry’s responsibility are duties, for example, conducting all military funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, providing protection for the capitol building and providing an escort for the president of the United States. The Tomb of the Unknowns is guarded because of many reasons. If people keep disrespecting it,the government would have to move the unknown soldiers and that’ll result in a lot of disrespect towards the unknown soldiers. The soldiers have served this country and deserve to be protected and remembered as the unknown. The guards that protect the tomb do it under this quote “Here Rests In Honored Glory An American Soldier Known But To God”. This quote is also engraved into the tomb so that the guards who protect the unknown can remember why they are respecting and protecting the tomb. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a practice utilized throughout the world to memorialize soldiers who have died in modern wars without being identified. The first monument of this kind was the Tomb of Unknown Soldiers in Frederica, Denmark (1858), which memorialized unknown soldiers who died in the First War of Schleswig. Another such Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is found in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was erected in 1866 to honor those soldiers who died during the American Civil War.

Honoring those that have served our country has been a long-standing tradition in one of the countries with the best militaries in the world. We even have an annual holiday celebrating those who have served where an entire day is dedicated to veterans in our country. But the question is often asked as to why we honor these veterans with their own day, and why they are treated with the utmost respect year round. I believe the answer varies from person to person, but the answer is clear to me.

On March 4, 1921, an unknown soldier from World War I was buried with the approval of Congress in the plaza of the Memorial Amphitheatre at Arlington National Cemetery. This serviceman was chosen randomly out of four other servicemen from four individual gravesites located in France. Not only was this soldier honored as a valiant trooper, but unknown soldiers from World War II and the Korean War were honored and remembered at this site too. The soldier located in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was buried with a white marble sarcophagus on top of the grave that has engravings of both Greek figures and words that say “an American soldier known but to God.” The importance of this mausoleum is that it honors those who were unidentified soldiers, and shows that our country will honor our armed forces and respect them, whether they are known or unknown.

These were two of the greatest political leaders ever and they made a difference in the world all though their lives were cut short too. The only negative was that what they were fighting for should have rightfully all ready been theirs. Not only have there been examples politically but socially too.

I am proud to say that both my grandma and grandpa served in the military. The experiences that they have had are invaluable to learn about. Their stories keep the service they have done alive and helps to enrich others about what serving the country is like. They do not glout about their service, but are humbled to have been able to make a contribution to the nation’s security. If not for my grandpa’s service, I would not be here today as he met my grandma through it. I respect his service and sacrifice for the country of today.

Laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a huge honor that would be amazing to partake in. This would mean to me in honoring all the lives lost serving our country and honoring all veterans, impacting my future for the better, and I would take away a greater respect from that I already have of many honorable lives lost in wars and who lay in Arlington National Cemetery. I have wanted to visit Arlington National Cemetery and this would be incredible experience.

The Tomb of the Unknown soldiers is a monument used to honor the ones who died and were not able to be identified later. The tomb contains a soldier who could not be identified to a certain body. This is how we remember the ones who died with no true recognition or their own grave. The Tomb is held at a cemetery called Arlington cemetery in Washington DC. The soldiers who guard the Tomb are very skilled and trained for long periods of time to get to stand in front of the Tomb ,and guard it. It is very difficult to become one of these guards.
