Quantitative Research Critique
Student’s Name Here
Title
For the research critique I will be taking nursing research paper with title- A quantitative study of the attitude, knowledge and experience of staff nurses on prioritizing comfort measures in care of the dying patient in an acute hospital setting. As per the title, the variables included in it were nurse staff and dying patients (Bachelor of Nursing Studies, 2011). The population was not mentioned particularly in the title but was mentioned as general hospital problem. The title provided an idea of how the nurses can highlight the comfort treatment measures for the dying patients.

The last section describes in the abstract was about the final outcomes which were proposed on the basis of the research methodology along with future findings.
Research Problem The research problem according to the problem discussed in the introduction part was clear and met the objectives of the variables that were examined and listed in the introduction of problem. The research problem was based on the planning of education programmes based on the nurse practitioners. The variables like nurse, dying patients and the nursing models were discussed and jotting down those points the research problem proposed the establishment of nurse’s approach towards the problems discussed in delivering the programs of end-of-life care (Bachelor of Nursing Studies, 2011). The significance factor of the problem discussed in the research and background of program was not mentioned efficiently. The research problem only highlighted the fact that how the end-of-care education practice can help in enhancing the nurse practice. The investigator could have included the importance of problem by joining the variables like nurse and dying patients. It can be framed like this- The practices of end-of-life care will help the nurses to increase the ability of dying patients against the disease symptoms.
Purpose of Study The purpose of the study was divided into different portion to explain that why he/she is performing the research and what is the main aim or objective
My position is consistent with the "Role of OT with End of Life Care" because the main theme is to maintain basic activities of daily living and basic functional skills. My belief on the role in end of life issues takes the patient’s quality of life in engaging in meaningful occupation as a priority and essential role as part of hospice and paliatative care. I do believe that the role of end of life career should also include caregiver training, as it is essential to the patient's quality of
Theory development stems from personal experiences, intuition, and knowledge of the theorist (Burns et al., 2013). When a scholar develops a theory, it has to be tested through research. The findings of the study are then presented to experts in the area of academics and the field of practice (Burns et al., 2013). The presentation of the findings allows experts to provide constructive criticism, highlight the pros and cons of the theory, and acknowledge whether or not the theory can be accepted as a guide to practice. This theory evaluation paper will give the reader a theory description, theory analysis, and an assessment of Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory of nursing (Alligood et al., 2010).
In order for a healthcare system to run effectively, research is essential when patents are involved. According to Jones (2016), research involves a structured, planned and logical approach to discovering new information, while aiming to extend understanding on a topic or problem area within the healthcare profession. To achieve this, research is divided into two methodologies, qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative research involves methods that are concerned with human perceptions and understanding of their social reality, adopted under complex research topics (Washer, Salloch, Ritter, Vollmann, Schildmann, 2017). These are usually adapted when the exploration topic involves patient experiences, perceptions, meanings, intentions and behaviours (Jones, 2016). Whereas quantitative approaches aim to produce and control social phenomena, through measurement, evaluation and generalisation of findings of a population and encouraging the reproduction of the results obtained. These studies are based around testing hypotheses utilising patients to achieve research goals in controlled environments (Park & Park, 2016). This paper will explore the features of qualitative and quantitative research through papers involving patients in order to highlight the differences in their features, via the aim, data collection methods and results obtained. The quantitative paper explores the effect of muscle energy technique and passive stretching on patients with functional disability with
Nursing research can be defined as the knowledge that is developed and built on the foundation of scientific inquiries of clinical practices (Grove and Burns, 2013). As part of the United States National Institute of Health (NIH), the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) was established to promote wellness and to prevent diseases, to improve the overall quality of life across populations, to eliminate disparities, and finally to set the directions for end-of-life, palliative research. This essay will explore the history of the NINR in terms of its location, dates of operation, overall purpose, mission, and Strategic Goals. The essay will then outline the NINR 's current initiatives, describe the organization 's priorities in terms of funding. Training opportunities available through the organization will also be described. Finally, the experience attained by group members through doing the assignment will be explored and summarized.
Have you ever gone to the Doctors before? The person who weighed you and took your temperature before you got to see the doctor was a nurse. A Nurse is – (verb) 1 to take care of (as a young child or a sick person) 2 to treat with special care ("Webster's dictionary & thesauras for students”). One thing I knew before I started researching is there are many different kinds of nursing. In this paper I will be exploring two different branches of nursing Hospice and Home Health Care.
This might be one reason why some patients choose conventional treatment instead of choosing a hospice program, there is many other factors that may contribute to this decision such as; financial status. This research will help give nurses a stronger knowledge base of characteristics and advantage of hospice care. In addition, nurses will be able to explain the advantages of Hospice programs to more of their patients, thus, they will be able to educate and encourage more families to choose hospice care. Not only will it help the patient live out a comfortable life it will also help the caregivers with
In relation to the purpose of this study, the driving force behind the research are three questions. What are nurses experience following patient’s death? What are their actions and coping strategies following patient death? Would better learning opportunities and supportive practice environments be provided once there is an understanding of nurses’ grief and coping process, if yes, was it beneficial. The researchers proceeded with a broad question which allowed the focus to be sharpened and delineated later in the
Nursing research has been a part of nursing practice for many years, consisting of both qualitative and quantitative research; it is essential in guiding nursing practice. Many nurses have a baseline understanding of research in general, but it is important for the researcher to understand their own values and beliefs when determining the type of research they will be performing. By understanding the differences between epistemology, methodology, and methods, the researcher can confidently conduct a valid research project.
Target population was pregnant women less than fourteen weeks gestation that had a sedentary lifestyle. The researcher used two data collection instruments to complete this study. The first is The Cornell Protocol Fitness Tool that measured cardiovascular fitness level and peak oxygen consumption. The second data collection instrument used was The Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire assessed energy expenditure and daily physical activity. Candidates were excluded if they had chronic hypertension, gestational diabetes, and any medical condition that will prohibit daily exercise, communication problems, or recommendation of primary care provider not to participate (Yeo 2009).
The aim of the nursing profession is to investigate and to assess any issue that may impact patient life. This can be done by the research. The nursing research study has a tremendous influence on current and future professional nursing practice, thus rendering it an essential component of the educational process. The purpose of a nursing research study is to collect the information where the result may identify a solution to a problem. As a result, the research study would play a vital role in the nursing profession. Basically, there are two main types of research studies: quantitative and qualitative, that a research is able to conduct a research study. Each of this type has their own view in
Control is and has been a pervasive factor in the lives of many across the world, influencing the way research can be conducted or the way people try to maintain a balance in the weight or appearance. The simple principle has to ability to create complexities for a person both on an external and internal level. An example of this is eating disorders, in which a person manipulates the amount of nutrition they may receive, either by denying oneself or over indulging in it. Healthcare workers, in many aspects are at risk of developing eating disorders since a major contributing factor is perceived stress. Nurses specifically are in a unique position of susceptibility since they are in a high stressed job where control is often difficult to
It is important to mention at this stage that a research study presented by a researcher may not give complete information about the selected topic. There can be certain limitations of methodology and the new researchers may criticise it for being incomplete. As research is a circular process in which ideas can be added and extracted by researchers anytime, the application of the presented ideas by one researcher are tested and verified.
As people’s life expectancy increases, the nursing field needs to keep pace with the rapid changes. There’s increased needs for nurses in many different field as well such as nursing home, hospitals, ambulatory cares, palliative care, and hospices. Therefore, an expectation of a role as a nurse has been rise. Nursing skills and knowledge cannot remain limited, but need to utilize in more various setting. In order to provide better care in various nursing field, continuing education is essential. For example, as population and their lifespan increases there’s also new diseases and new treatment has been developed. A competence nurse must embrace old and new skills and thorough knowledge to achieve best quality of care and optimum patient’s overall outcome. The quality of patient care heavily depends on nurses’ level of education. One research proves that nurses who received higher level of education showed lower mortality rate, less medical errors, and higher patient satisfaction. This outcome is related to higher education which prepared nurses to handle various circumstances with appropriate answers. Nurses are people who spend most of time with ill individuals at the bed side. Nursing education will provide new demanding roles of nurses’ requirement such as seeing the patient as a whole, providing appropriate response to patient’s condition, and integrating knowledge and skills accordingly.
The background and significance of this study are properly presented in the introduction. The research question is presented at the end of the
Moreover, the motivation behind the study was twofold. First, to understand if there were any changes in the results which
