As we continue to learn about leadership, we continue to see the importance of having certain qualities. There are differing opinions on what traits hold more importance than others, but in the end, each quality plays a specific role in forming an excellent leader. Three qualities that preform a role in the equation, and that needs strengthened in my own leadership skills, are enthusiasm, persistence and charisma. The first leadership quality that is extremely important to master is showing enthusiasm. In the text book, it emphasizes the significance of genuine enthusiasm and the persuasion power that comes with it. Employees become excited and willing to accept the direction of a leader when enthusiasm is displayed. This is such an important trait to incorporate into your leadership style because having a strong and positive morale in the atmosphere encourages employees to make great strides in the interest of the company. Having an enthusiastic leader beaming with pride and encouragement creates a contagious mood in the room. Certain situations can put a strain on the leader though, which makes it difficult to continually show enthusiasm. This is where I struggle when it comes to this trait. When you are a leader you have to be able to put your own emotions to the side, and lead with positivity. It is a ludicrous idea to assume that leaders do not experience bad days and have their own personal problems to deal with, but if they cannot put that aside when they
Having patience, self-discipline, optimistic, intelligence and confident are all good qualities a good leader should have. Leaders are encouraging to the team members and not negative toward them, that gives the players confidence so they can concentrate on what they need to improve. In addition they
The next question posed to Rene inquired about essential characteristics of a leader. After giving the question some thought she responded by saying that a leader must be able to remain objective and prioritize. “Prioritizing in my job is essential,” Rene stated, “with so many issues to deal with some nights it can be difficult to determine which to tackle first. However, remaining calm and objective in your decision making can help a leader prioritize properly, which can improve patient outcomes.” Additionally, Rene emphasized that the best leaders lead by example. By displaying desired attitudes and behaviors, a nursing leader may inspire their staff to act in a similar manner. Another area Rene stressed when posed this question was a leader’s ability to support learning. She went on to state that “it is necessary to focus on learning, not chastising. Placing the blame on someone rather than stepping back and looking at the details of a problem, deters the team from achieving the overall goal. Incident reports remain vital to the process of learning.” Rene continued to emphasis that by filling out incident reports individuals can analyze a situation or process and determine where the flaws or errors remain present. Without incident reports and learning from mistakes, growth remains difficult. Diana S. Contino (2011), author of “Leadership Competencies: Knowledge, Skills, and Aptitudes Nurses Need to Lead Organizations Effectively,” believes that organizational and
Leadership is a quality that everyone wants, but few achieve. A good leader encompasses several qualities including: approachability, honesty, intelligence with logical problem solving, trustworthiness, ability to earn and give respect, and confidence with the absence of arrogance. One of the most important qualities previously listed is
Good leaders have a passion for the work they do and feel it is important. Sharing that passion and enthusiasm with employees can help to motivate employees to become more productive. Praising
Leadership: a quality that everyone possesses, but not everyone knows how to put it to action. It is a quality that is noteworthy in those that act upon it, and which plays a role in their life and the lives of others. However, leadership is a quality that has its own bearings and characteristics. Three characteristics that an effective leader ought to possess are effective communication skills, charisma, and a goal in mind accompanied by a plan to get there. With these three qualities, a leader can be successful in practically any endeavor.
The most important characteristics an effective leader must have are: motivation, selflessness, and have an exemplary character. Many people might say these characteristics are not essential for a leader, but in order to be successful, a leader must think and care about others first rather than themselves. A leader must be passionate and motivated to help the people achieve their goals. A leader must want to lead the people at all times no matter what the circumstances are. A leader must have the ability to persuade others and give them hope whenever times get rough.
(2016). p.33). There are many traits that a leader must have to be able to be successful. Three that come to mind are trustworthy or honest, motivated, and knowledgeable. Ever leader needs to be honest and have the trust of those who are following them. This is essential for any plan or idea to be carried out steadily. Also, open communication cannot happen if one does not trust their leader. Next, a leader must be motivated and have energy. If a leader is not motivated, those who are following them are also not going to be motivated either. Someone has to be able to push others to keep up the hard work to get to where they need to be. Lastly, a leader needs to be knowledgeable. At work, often when faced with something that I do not know the answer to, I go to my charge nurse who is very knowledgeable on almost all situations that may arise. If lacking any vital knowledge, staff under that leader will not have anyone to go to in times of need. This leads to the follower being lost and not knowing what the next step is in their situation. All of these traits are what I like to see in a leader in my work
According to Bass (1981) leadership can be defined in different ways: It is an act of influencing activities of an organized group in its quest to set goals and also to achieve certain goals. He also defined leadership to mean the influence that somebody exercises in a situation by means of communication in order to attain a specified goal. However in order to be a leader you require a variety of qualities. There is no one specific quality that makes one person a better leader; it’s more of a compilation of traits building an ideology as to how you as leaders handle situations. The traits I try and to reflect on as are; Self-assurance, maturity, high energy, team orientation, and charisma. As a leader I try to incorporate these traits along with the philosophy of an old Chinese Proverb; Tell me, I’ll forget, show me, I’ll remember, Involve me, I’ll understand. This reminds me that not everyone learns of understands situations the same way, I must as a leader be-able to reach the masses to have followers.
What is a leader? A leader is a person who commands a group, organization, or country. Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. I have experience democratic leaderships through playing on a high school football team, being apart of groups in college for class presentations, being a youth leader in my church, and also being apart of a family. I have gain important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Some of valuable leaderships traits that I obtained and strengthened are: how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to have more patience, to be not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I
Qualities of a Leader Everyone has their own ideas of what makes a leader, as I do. A leader is capable of inspiring, motivating and persuading people around them to commit willingly to work towards a specific idea. A leader has a clear vision and is able to see where they want to go and are able to communicate it clearly to their team. Some people say that some leaders are ‘naturally born’ while others state that being a leader does not come naturally, but can develop through encouragement from others, being inspired and by means of practice.
In the world today, there are leaders everywhere such as Parents, Pastors, The President, CEO of Companies, Supervisors and World leaders just to name a few, these individuals can be good or bad, for you or against you. A leader is a person that sees things through in order to make change either in the mental growing aspect of one’s life, the economics of the world, or spiritual belief. The characteristics of a good leader are the leaders’ ability to inspire others willingness to leader and integrity.
It is so important for every individual to know the great characteristics of being a leader. Leadership today is such a dominant characteristic to have because it shows the capability of being able to lead others with an purpose. This role is used everywhere within a job field, sports, churches, homes, and pretty much anything you can name when you are taking authority from someone or something. Five characteristics of leadership that I will be discussing in this paper on how leadership enhances yourself as a person from culture to culture, how leadership enhances the qualifications of your progress in the workplace, and also how leadership helps you in college as well are: Visionary, Open-minded, Inspirational, Humbleness and Trustworthiness.
Leadership what makes a good leader? Does whatever the leader engage in have an impact on its team? To me what makes a good leader is someone who can show people how to be better and do honorable acts. It is like being a role model to someone. Whatever you do can be taken the wrong way and since you’re the leader people will follow so you have to do right. Does the police commissioner hold these qualities? Are the rules and plans set by the commissioner right in any way or are they just set in a way that sets a barrier between the community and the officers.
What qualities make a good leader? You can ask a hundred different people, and you will get a hundred different answers. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and time at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a great leader. In terms of a leader’s moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence on the success of a leader, because without common consideration, a
I never would have imagined when I started this journey a year ago that I would be so changed in my opinions of what a good leader should be. We began with organizational behavior and the importance of the individual and what motivates them, and how this applies to group cohesiveness. Throughout each module we were given insight by example of how certain types of leadership works and does not work. After eighteen years of working for the same company and being led by several different types of leaders, I hope to combine what I learned through this last year with what is really needed to become an awesome leader.
