PURPOSE OF THIS CASE STUDY
The current Commissioner of DFES, Mr Wayne Gregson, reached out to The University of Western Australia (UWA) to gain insight into questions such as: How and why did things happen the way they did, and what lessons are there to be learnt? A provisional Psychologist and Master of Industrial/Organisational candidate from UWA was tasked with developing this case study. This undertaking involved using a best-practice and evidence driven approach to researching the situation, and distilling the information.

Thirteen interviews were conducted face-to-face, two via teleconference and one via email. Interview participants were selected based on their role in past events, as identified from the desk research. A number of informal conversations were also held with various individuals.
This case study gathered information from individuals spanning almost all business areas in DFES and relevant external parties. The information gathered also represents individuals from various ranks within DFES. The research for this case study was intended to cover as many different perspectives as possible. To facilitate honest and detailed interviews, participants have not been identified in this case study.
LIMITATIONS
Despite best attempts to capture as many different points of view as possible, it was not practical to interview everyone who was involved in the actual events. It is acknowledged that there were many more individuals who would have been able to provide information to inform the development of this case study. Therefore, readers should be reminded that this case study is based on information gathered from a sample of people, and is not representative of all individuals involved in the actual
