Purpose
While there are many more specific purposes in the Gospel of Luke, the overall purpose is “a defense of the Christian faith, useful for both evangelism and discipleship.” Luke is an eloquent Gospel that provided valuable information about the faith for the believers in the church that are still as applicable today in the twenty-first century. A primary purpose in the Gospel of Luke is to tell of the miraculous conception, birth, and childhood of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Luke is the only Gospel (besides Matthew) that focuses on the birth and virginal conception of Christ. The Gospels of Mark and John give no information regarding the conception and birth of Christ; the first mention of Christ in these Gospels is of Christ as a grown man. The Gospel of Luke begins with an introduction, then tells of the foretelling of the birth of John the Baptist to the priest Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth (Luke 1:5-25). Zechariah and Elizabeth were both of an advanced age, and Elizabeth had not yet born children. An angel of the Lord, Gabriel, visited Zechariah to announce that Elizabeth would conceive and bear a son named John, even in her advanced age. Zechariah was in disbelief at Gabriel’s words, so Gabriel stated that Zechariah would be unable to speak until the birth of John due to his disbelief. Elizabeth gave birth to a son, John the Baptist, who would later preach and would baptize Jesus Christ. This miraculous conception and birth is similar to the miraculous conception and birth of Isaac to Abraham and Sarah; Isaac and John the Baptist were both babies that were heavily desired and prayed for by their parents, and were conceived when their mothers were older and thought to be
