Purity By Jonathan Franzen: A Literary Analysis

A. Form, structure, plot: Jonathan Franzen uses an interesting jumbled chronology structure to create a complex plot in his fifth novel, Purity. His 2015 novel has a total of 563 pages and divided into 7 sections, each section shows the reader a different perspective of the story about a recent college graduate by the name of Pip, who struggles with a complicated past and $130,000 in student loan debt. Tone: The author’s tone in Purity can be described as very critical, powerful and frequently passive aggressive. Although his simple words and casual syntax may be decieving, Franzen offers a good amount of judgement throughout the novel on modernity and the way we live now. He is very straight forward when offering his views, and his passive aggressive tone never fails to make an appearance. At one point in the book a character tells Pip, "So many Jonathans. Ambition, vitality.” Basically Franzen threw this in as a way of mocking himself, and very haughty in my opinion, as if just to make it clear to everyone that he is well aware of his reputation. With his powerful attitude towards the subject he shows how media narratives can morph reality to such an extent that the fabricated subjects begin to feel far more real than the original person ever was. Franzen’s tone compliments his storyline
