Puritan Religion

In early 1600's, Puritans followed the Pilgrims to America then they landed in Massachusetts bay. The Puritans started the colony because they wanted to escape religious persecution. The only religion was the Puritans.In the early 1600's of, Massachusetts there was only one Indian tribe,and that was the Wampanoag. Puritans tried to purify the Anglican church because they wanted to make services simpler and taking ranks of authority

Throughout the story, “The Puritan Dilemma,” The author, Edmund Morgan focuses directly towards his view on the Puritan Dilemma and how it affected John Winthrop in both his personal life along with his professional life. Morgan also talks about how the government is treated by the puritans in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. According to Morgan, the Puritan Dilemma meant finding balance between personal life along with spiritual. Morgan explains how John copes with this and how his views on Puritanism affected his life entirely. Morgan believes that the Puritan Dilemma should be praised. He shows this praise through the main figurine of the story, John Winthrop. Puritanism is viewed with strict religious laws where life should only be lived through the bible.

Religions in the American colonies have always occupied an important position. For example, Puritans are holding a dominant position in New England area, especially in Massachusetts Bay Colony. In addition, in the 17th century, the government controlled almost everything. The Puritans were a religious group of people who came from England to America in the 1600’s. As Protestants, they relied heavily on the Bible as the guide for every part of their lives. They used these biblical principles as the basis for their laws and marriage. The Puritans had very strict rules about how men and women should act in a marriage and had very harsh penalties for those who broke these rules. According to Matthew Glass and Edward Queen, “During the Colonial Period, Protestant Americans viewed sex as a fundamental feature of married life, enabling reproduction as well as providing an outlet for feelings.” Because they felt this was an important part of marriage, the Puritan laws were meant to be followed. As society gained more people, sex became more widespread which made the officials of the church look for more ways to stop the desire to do anything. Overall, the Puritans had meticulous standards for individuals, immoderate laws and punishments, habits and daily life which were strictly formed by decisive ways.

The definition of religious liberty differs in every colony. Every colony has a different belief some believe in god and others don’t, but no one was free to be choose on what religion people wanted to follow. In the American colonies were largely non-Catholics. Although some other religions were practiced in most colonies, the Puritans in Massachusetts established a new law that no all religions could be practice. Pennsylvania was the first to follow those rules from court. Spanish colonies were Catholics, there was no other religion to follow. When people got tired and tried to protested about a new religion they would be persecuted and would send them to another place. French colonies, in their Colonial life was some large Catholic believers. Religious beliefs of the Dutch vary.

The prospect of having religious freedom was enough reason for the Puritans to pick up their lives and begin a journey across the Atlantic. The Puritans lived and breathed their religion, which was prominent in their cultural and political beliefs. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter captures these ways with a beautiful story about a young woman and her struggle with the Puritanism expectations. American Puritanism, with its strict religious beliefs, swept over the New England colonies during the seventeenth century.

The Puritans is understood in religious faith and they originate from England in early 1600. They are called Puritans because they thought they need to purify the Anglican church from the Catholic influence. In England, they were not successful with their mission and decided to move to New England and look for a home and live a Puritan life. But not all people who moved wanted to change the churches beliefs, some people wanted to get out of there because they felt like being prosecuted and wanted to leave as soon as they can with them.

Traits from each of the different religious groups set them apart in many different ways. Many of the religions shared the fact that they rejected the system of beliefs of the Catholic Church, because they rejected the Catholic Church and their way of life it helped in the process of them deciding to leave England. Each religion had their set of beliefs and because of this disliked or disagreed with the beliefs of the other religions. Puritans were English Protestants and wanted to simplify worship. The Quakers or Society of Friends practiced Christian principles with beliefs of the “Inner Light.”

Religion during the Colonial Period was a new outbreak to many of the people traveling to the United States. Some people were traveling to the United States for a better life and some were traveling in search of fortune. Religion became a pivotal part of the survival of Mary Rowlandson and Cabeza De Vaca. Their religious views helped them in numerous ways, such as, to heal others, to escape from pain, and to survive the tortures they endured. The use of religion between Mary Rowlandson and Cabeza De Vaca was diverse in several ways during the Colonial Period, yet similar in the ways we use it today.

What are the differences between the Bible and the beliefs of the Puritan people? Did the Puritan people believe the truth? What type of changes happened to literature in the years of the Puritans compared to modern literature? There will be many arguments over what the truth is, but no one should ever argue with the facts of the Bible, it is indeed the Word of God. Although the Puritans believed their faith and religion were correct; they were not the chosen people of God, the “elect,” were not going to be the only people spared from eternal punishment, and they were not flexible in their religious faith.

Puritan Laws and MoralsRules and morals are irritating. Some can seem unnecessary or frivolous, such as “don’t leave the toaster out” even though someone else is about to use it. However, stricter laws and morals exist, especially in history. The Puritan group was a religious group in England that left for America, seeking religious freedom (Wilson 913). They hoped to practice their religion freely without constant governmental and public disapproval. The difference between this group and the legendary pilgrims, however, was the strict rules and morals the Puritan group followed. The Puritans practiced several laws and believed in various morals that today’s society would consider harsh. The Puritans had several impossible laws. For example,

History has witnessed an abundance of literatures where an individual values and possesses their beliefs towards a higher being. During the early Americas, various literature portrayed the reliance of God in their society. Based on the works of the Puritans by Anne Bradstreet, William Bradford, Jonathan Edward and Cotton Mather, many believed that God played a significant aspect of their daily lives.

Ever since a young age my parents have told me that someone is always watching me. Whether this be God, other people, or even the NSA someone is always watching. A panopticon is a great analogy of how Puritan society works. The Puritans are in the mindset that someone is always watching them and that is the main idea of a panopticon. The “prisoners”, here the Puritans, are in cells all around a tower and the cells are see through so that whoever is in the tower can see the prisoners at all times. In the 1700s the extent of religion was not very vast and many people were prosecuted for their religious beliefs, however there were colonies that allowed people to have their own beliefs and this helped pave the way for religious freedoms in the colonies.

As I rise from bed, I can hear my wife starting to make breakfast. Today is going to be quite a day, mainly due to an approaching winter, and the need to harvest the squash and corn is increasing each day.
