There are three major conflicts that are present in this scenario, for example: Barb Johnson is a new hire at her current place of employment, her assistant superintendent would like her to present a curriculum change to her new colleagues, and the resistance to change expressed by the middle school teacher. Each of these issues is something a reading specialist would need to take care of in any school district. As a recent, or new hire, Barb Johnson is entering a work environment that has an established set of work associations. They are knowledgeable about the way their district works and are friendly and familiar with their co-workers. Any time a new person is introduced, it may cause some tension among staff members. In Barb’s case, she …show more content…
It is important for Barb to remember that she is new and she should make sure she is communicating her goals and objective to the teachers. Since Barb decided to meet with the middle school teachers, they have expressed their resistance to the suggestion of using a balanced literacy program. As to be expected, some of the teachers were set in their ways and did not want to change the way they teach reading. Becoming frustrated with the teachers, Barb need to think of a way to explain that balanced literacy is importance and the plan she will use to slowly integrate balanced literacy into their …show more content…
Creating a staff committee would be a great start to this planning process. In order for the teaching staff to get on board with this change, they need to understand why it is important for them to implement a balanced literacy program. This staff committee would need to take in account a number of different aspects, such as: elements of a balanced literacy program, instruction, environment, program responsibility, goals for students, inclusion of family and community, and professional development plans. Through these sessions, the teachers can be informed about the program as well as practice with some examples and scenarios and have the ability to voice their opinions, issues or
Within my school teaching literacy takes place in everyday classroom. The format of this teaching varies to include different activities for each day. Certain aspects of literacy are taught every week. The teachers are to ensure that the work planned is appropriate for the age stage and ability of the children. They use strategies such as talk partners and small group work to allow children to develop their oral skills and ability to communicate and cooperate with their peers. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of effective oracy skills in the early years and foundation phase. Role play areas are set up in partnership with the children so that they can practice speaking Listening and drama based activities within a meanful context.
For this reason, careful research and understanding of what the standards are asking educators to teach is required. Houck (2008) informs balanced literacy is a combination of teaching methods and strategies involving both whole language and skill development. Used correctly, balanced literacy has the potential to meet the needs of all students at their own individual level. All components of reading, including phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, speaking and listening, and writing are taught using this framework. Balanced literacy provides instruction by various methods. The use of read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, word study, and writing are all used to provide students with a release of responsibility model in which they go from guided to independent work (Frey, 2005). The need for all components of reading to work together in order for comprehension to take place makes balanced literacy an instructional reform plan worth implementing (Beringer & Abbott, 2010).
Based on Crystal's most recent data and previous evaluations, Crystal will benefit from Special Education services and accommodations to show growth and interact with grade and age-appropriate texts and reading material. She will need accommodations such as extended
I have a long list of scholarships that I have decided to apply for. The scholarships focus on my likes and I chose the ones that I knew would be the most achievable. The deadlines for all the scholarships are close together so it gives me a heads up that I am going to need to start them before senior year has began. The scholarships are: Earth Day Award which is for $500 and the deadline is 2/29/16, Protect the Elephants which is for $3,000 and the deadline is 3/31/16, National WWII which is for $1,000 and the deadline is is TBD, Joe Foss Institute which is $5,000 and the deadline is TBD, B’nai B’rith International which is for $5,000 and the deadline is 3/25/16, “No Essay” Scholarship which is for $2,000 and the deadline is 3/31/16,
Laura Wallen. My teacher and class sponsor Ms.Wallen was killed during the first week of my senior year. If I had one more chance to talk to her I would be ecstatic. I would want to talk to her because she was one of the first teachers I met in high school. Having Ms.Wallen as a teacher who was always here supporting me was a great feeling. Every Time I saw Ms.Wallen she was smiling. During our homecoming week we would have to design a hallway and even with little to no supplies and only a few class council member, she would make it feel like we were winners. I would want to talk about college applications and all of the senior year events we were planning together. I would want to tell her that I love her and that her support from the beginning
When I first ran the coding, the program was not working. Using the debugger, I found out that the program was not reading the file. By looking into the variables, I noticed that the some data were missing. The following is the list of my correction to fix the coding.
Initial groups were based on end of year 2017 result/benchmark and have been assessed and grouped to skills and needs for higher order thinking and grouped accordingly. Groups are based on teacher observation and current assessments and will be adjusted to accommodate the needs and abilities of the students during year. The class has been divided into five literacy groups.
Educators can aid in ensuring that these staggering statistics do not continue on to our future generations. Preschool and elementary teachers have the power to combat these literacy deficits by creating a solid literacy foundation within their classroom. The most important benefit of having a solid literacy foundation is its effectiveness in providing students with a variety of
Most of the other students in her 2nd grade classroom are able to read classroom text and complete work independently. They also read books for enjoyment on their own. The reading time in her classroom consists of a block during which the teacher works with small groups and the children are expected to work quite independently when they are not working directly with the teacher. The class uses a trade book format and this is utilized across the curriculum. Students are provided with short skills building lessons in large and small groups. Most of the time spent during explicit reading instruction is targeted to helping students develop reading fluency.
I learned during this professional development was that many teachers were not following the balanced literacy program fully. Many teachers were required to change the way they performed guided reading due to this professional training. I watched many teachers changed their ideas about a balanced literacy program. I was able to see how my classroom changed reading programs to fit the needs of the principal’s expectations. Meeting the expectations of your principal was a good experience for me to witness because it changed how my classroom ran. Additionally, because of this training teachers had to change their views of balanced literacy. My second major understanding from the balanced literacy training was be flexible and always willing to adjust your schedule. Even though, it was a lot of work to change how guided reading flowed in the classroom, meeting the principal’s expectations improved professional relationships from principal to teacher. The relationship strengthened because the principal was able to recognize teachers who accepted her leadership as a brand new
As a transformational leader who will serve as a vital change agent for the implementation of “Dynamic Reading Program”, following the outline of Beckhard and Harris’s planned change model (1977). They proposed a general six-step change process to effectively manage change as the school leader. As it relates the implementation of the new reading core, a school leader must take the first step of the model and diagnose the present condition of the school’s reading success rate. The school leader of a school within the district must work with a collaborative team to analyze the school’s reading assessment data and data by grade level to compare it to Washington Elementary School’s reading assessment data. All students need to have a data point from which will become the beginning data for the start of the reading program. This will affect
How should a flourishing reading program for fifth grade appear? “There’s no one best way to teach reading; instead, [educators must] create a balanced literacy program” to meet every student’s needs (Tompkins, 2014, p.327). It is essential that all literacy programs feature instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension so that students can become capable readers and writers.
Balanced literacy, essentially is a combination of the best of both Top Down, also known as Whole Language, where authentic literature become the focus , as well as Bottom Up approach, which includes a strong focus on phonics instruction (Golche, 2016). Golche (2016) states that balanced literacy includes both reading and writing instruction. In the Balanced Literacy Model, there is a strong connection between the Reader’s Workshop and the Writer’s Workshop. Common lessons that evolve through reading and writing area reinforce the unit the children are learning at a particular period. The goal of the entire balanced literacy experience is for children to become competent readers and writers through the exposure to and active participation
With the number of students to teacher ratio in third grade at this school, it is very difficult to meet the individual needs of each and every student in the third grade. It is not that there is something missing from the curriculum for reading in third grade;
As the agreement that literacy is the center of all learning grows, the expectations for teachers to help students are too. In this proposal I will be stating findings from the NCTE, these surveys involved over 3,000 classroom teachers. All in which helped voice on whether the US was ready for new literacy policies. When you are in middle school you don’t realize how important literacy is as you grow older. This mentality continues to stay with you, especially when your teachers don’t stress this to you. The problem that occurs most often to me is when you have an English teacher and a science teacher that don’t work together to show students that literacy is important. In the Remodeling Literacy Learning survey, they state that schools aren’t structured to facilitate educators working together. This would make sense to me because my literacy history reflects this. My teachers were so involved in the work that they had to teach, they wouldn’t take the time to ask what the other teachers were doing. I believe they should be all working together and having a plan for the students, so they build a better education system. One that is stronger, as a whole.
