Victims that fall prey to a killer typically have to meet the killers’ requirements. To decide on a victim, some killers will stalk them for days prior to actually committing the crime. Often times, serial killers will choose people that have similar traits to their previous victims. Victimology is the history of the victim and the psychological effects the crime had on them. Law enforcement uses victimology to help identify and catch the offender by understanding why a victim was targeted. If they can uncover why that victim was targeted, they may be able to learn the motive. Each killer has their own motive, whether it be imaginary voices in their head or because they want to gain the feeling of power or control. A visionary killer will typically suffer from a type of psychosis, where they have hallucinations or visions that instruct them to slaughter other humans or even sometimes animals (The Mind of a Serial Killer). Psychosis is a symptom of a mental illness, not a medical condition in itself, known as a loss of connection with reality (What is Psychosis). Their disconnection from reality could potentially cause them to believe they have instructions to murder humans or animals. Carroll Edward Cole had a mission to kill unfaithful women, killing at least thirteen women who he had seduced and had sexual intercourse with. He is an example of a mission orientated killer. Ted Bundy was known as a “charmer” luring women to him by appearing injured. Striking these women as a harmless injured stranger, they sympathized with him and rushed to care for the stranger in need. Affection proved to be their weakness when Ted captured, tortured, raped, and raped again after their death.
