The third article is associated with psychological disorders increasing in college campuses. Back in 2008 and article reported that half of college students experienced having suicidal episodes or have considered suicide. Many suffered from depression while others were on medication for anxiety or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD). As stated, “Major depressive disorder, for example, has nine criteria including depressed mood; loss of interest or pleasure in activities; changes in appetite or body weigh; changes in sleep patterns; feelings of worthlessness; and suicidal thoughts.” (Reifman, A. ,2011) Stress can contribute to a state of mind easily causing depressed moods along with mood swings. For instance, when bills need to be paid and a worker has been underpaid by his or hers employer things can get stressful. Multiple mental problems can contribute to thoughts of suicide as well. So long as university administrators are aware that mental health is very important to college …show more content…
As, “the experience of stress associated with “coming out” is often related to actual or expected negative reactions from friends, family and peers” (Baams,L , 2015). Everything portrayed in the media can be a factor to associating negativity with being bisexual or homosexual, this is also known as associative learning. Not having the ability to freely express ourselves in our environment can cause stress and depression. For instance, when one takes on the risk of trying to please people it can be stressful because no matter how hard one may work the other still degrades. There are two factors that take part in the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide including, perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness. Within the article they were studying what causes depression and suicide in lesbian, gay and bisexual youth. Presented in the study they believed
The current suicide rate among 15- to 24-year olds is quite disturbing. Growing in numbers since 2007, the latest toll taken in 2013 on suicide within college settings is 11.1 deaths per 100,000 people (Scelfo, 2015). According to the article Suicide on Campus and the Pressure of Perfection, Pennsylvania State University had six students commit suicide in a 13-month stretch (Scelfo, 2015). Suicide within college settings are usually linked with severe depression. As mentioned by Kevin Breel in the Confessions of a Depressed Comic Ted Talk, depression is not sadness, real depression is being sad when everything in your life is going right and this, this I can personally relate to.
The mental stability of college students has dropped to a staggering low, so low that 1 in 4 college students have reported that the have had suicidal thoughts and actions. That's just the amount that have reported that they are feeling suicidal. So many college students struggle with mental illness and receive no help or guidance in curing and dealing with their illnesses.
Suicide is the final part of the chain and with the information that has been shown, statistically, the more a student continues to fight in their education, the more likely they are to take their lives away. Cris Brownson and all the other authors, write about suicide within college students in “Distress and Suicidality in Higher Education: Implications for Population-Oriented Prevention Paradigms.” Suicide is second most common death within college students according to this paper and the authors want to know why this is to explain to the audience the type of problems college students typically go through. A bunch of students from University of Texas Austin were sampled to find out about their mental health history and found that a 26% of students have considered suicide at least once in their lives, 22% of undergraduate and 18% of graduate students have seriously considered suicide, and 7% of undergraduates and 5% of graduate students have attempted suicide at least once in their lives. It was also reported that 73% of these students most stressful times were because of academic reason, which branch off to financial problems, school work, relationship problems, ect. It also shows that alcohol and drugs play a major role in suicide since students will try overdosing with alcohol and drugs to try to take away their own lives. It was originally
The text Campus Crisis by Kate Lanau addresses a serious social problem that occurred at Cornell University in 2010, where some students committed suicide due to various psychological problems caused by various reasons, including family pressure, Simple case that caused these fatalities.
Depression, anxiety, and suicide are relatively common phenomena among college students (Klerman & Weissman, 1989; Twenge et al., 2010).
College represents a form of higher learning. For many, it is also a time for personal growth as we transition into adulthood. This in itself is a stressful situation as one must make drastic adjustments to a new role, environment, and demands. Stress is a major contributor to the development of mental and emotional issues (Rodgers, L., Tennison, L. 2009). Research has been done to determine the impact of depression and anxiety on university students. It has been
There is a study that says that the prevalence of clinical depression in college students maybe rising. Being a college student and reading that, makes me agree with that one hundred percent. I say this because students try so hard and sometimes trying that hard leads to failure, especially in college. The article also implies
Mental health is a serious topic that is often not taken seriously. Due to my own struggles with depression, I have experienced the impact mental illness can have on a student’s life. Mental illness can make everyday life feel unbearable and can have just as serious of an effect on a person as a physical illness. The causes of increasing mental health problems in college students are numerous, and it will take work from both students and universities to overcome this problem, but change is necessary for the health of U.S. college students.
"Homosexuality Is Not a Risk Factor in Teen Suicide," was published in Problems with Death and written by Ritch C. Savin-Williams and Geoffrey L. Ream. This article states that homosexuality does not affect the suicide attempt rate. According to the authors, the suicide rate between homosexual and heterosexual adolescents is the same even though life tends to be more stressful for those of same-sex orientation. Savin-Williams and Ream explain that instead of same-sex orientation being a factor, psychological, behavioral, and environmental influences are suicide risk factors. This article was aimed toward a adult audiences who are involved or interested in matters concerning the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay. Bisexual, and Transgender) community. Through
In most college campuses, students struggle with depression and other mental issues. I had my phase with depression, and one thing that I knew was a path out was to be open about it. My first semester in college, the student that I sat next to in math, our relationship grew stronger day by day. I got to know his personal struggle when I was over at his house for a study session, and he broke down when he was on the phone with his father. It was reveled that his father had a change of heart, and will go through of the divorcement with his wife. He was livid as he threw the phone against the wall. I’d did my best to calm him down as he was pacing back and forth in the living room as he was cursing like there was no tomorrow. Eventually, he ran
Research into the mental health of LGBT adolescents has revealed that they are at greater risk for emotional and mental distress. LGBT adolescents encounter circumstances directly related to their sexual orientation that places them at a greater risk for emotional discourse. This stress which is specific to lesbian and gay individuals is often referred to as “gay-related stress”. Gay-related stress can be both external, internal, as well as discomfort with their sexuality. (McLaughlin, K. et, al., 2011) Externalized gay related stress involves the experience of violence, verbal abuse, rejection and other stressful events committed by others toward someone who is or who is perceived to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender. Internalized gay
Depression and anxiety among college students is something that experts have focused on for the past twenty years. The information they have been gathering ranges from the different stressors of college life to the effects of one's culture on how they deal with depression or anxiety symptoms. They have identified a few core characteristics of depression and thoughts of suicide. These are both serious concepts in which people need to seek help for. It is important for students to reach out to friends, family, or professionals to support them during this time. Many campuses offer counseling centers which are seeing many more people over the past few years.
In suicidal research little has been found on teens with same-sex sexual orientation. Researchers discovered that the homosexual youth are at least twice as likely to commit suicide than heterosexuals. A study was completed discovering that heterosexual youth is greater than 7-fold increase in suicide attempts. Another study {ACCORDING TO XXXX}of sexual orientation was done showing that gay, lesbian, and bisexual are more likely to try suicide. This accounts for 30% of the total adolescents who are suicidal. Those who died in San Diego from 1981 to 1983 were homosexuals. After this study, they did not find a correlation between same-sex orientation and suicide. The influence of gender identity disorder can motivate suicide factors related to problems in the formation of gender identity. This study includes the association between sexual orientation and gender identity by using case-control design. Researchers expect that homosexual orientation will not be common among suicide victims. Rather, intimidation in same-sex orientation would be more common with compared to control subject. Sexual orientation, gender identity, and intimidation all correlate in young victims and controlled subjects. In this study, 4 out of 55 victims had an item indicating same-sex sexual orientation. Researchers discovered that anxiety disorders in young suicide victims with same-sex sexual orientation were greater to commit suicide. Drug use and depression were connected to heterosexuals according to the Nation Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. The study states that sexual orientation and suicide should be studied in a bigger sample. This sample did not correlate gender identity issues to be more common to suicide. They were more likely to have an anxiety
“Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college and university students, with current statistics indicating that 18% of undergraduate students have seriously considered attempting suicide in their lifetime, and 40% to 50% of these students reported multiple episodes of suicidal thoughts.” (Ploskonka & Servaty-Seib, 2014, p. 81). Finishing high school and starting college can be a demanding and challenging transition to make. Unfortunately, college and university students have suicidal thoughts or attempt suicide. In this paper I will argue the connections between suicide and attending a university or college. I will begin by examine the factors that contribute to college students to committing suicide. Additionally, I will outline some of the special populations in college or university settings that suicide impacts. Finally, I will discuss strengths and limitations on literature I have read.
As adolescents try to understand and figure out their true self, they are subject to a lot of hate and ridicule. Being a homosexual male or female comes with an abundance of health risks and suicide is the main one. Substance abuse and depression are minor health risks accompanied with being a homosexual adolescent. Sexual orientation has developed as a much debated risk variable for adolescent suicide lately. It is usually trusted that the troubles of managing the disgrace of homosexuality may prompt depression and even suicide among homosexual men and women; this might be especially elevated among youth, while developing sexuality turns into a focal issue in young people lives. “LGB youth are 4 times more likely, and questioning youth are 3 times more likely, to attempt suicide as their straight peers”(CDC 2011). It is important for these individuals to have all the help and support to prevent any of the health risks from happening. Those “who come from highly rejecting families are 8.4 times as likely to have attempted suicide as LGB peers who reported no or low levels of family rejection.”(Family acceptance project 2009). Family is the main unit of support needed for adolescents who are finding or living their sexual identity.
