PS400 Cognitive Psychology
Assignment: 4
Question 1:
Compare and contrast cognitive and behavioral approaches, providing two similarities and two difference between the chosen approaches. In comparing cognitive approaches to behavioral approaches in psychology I have found that the cognitive approach revolves around the concept of understanding. Meaning why people act in a certain way, as to which requires the understanding of the internal process of how the mind work. From my readings cognitive psychology specialized branch involves the study of mental process people use daily such as thinking, perceiving, remembering and learning.

Question 2:
Discuss two original examples of perception of agency.
The examples of a perception of agency are:
An example of perception of and action, would be if a child was running to catch his dog who is running down the street. With this your legs and arms are moving, not counting that this child is talking by calling his dog’s name. This perception is the study of cognition consist of moving around. It is a response of the environmental stimulus. This action perception developments involves some type of motor activity.
Another example would be working in a garden. This is movement of the hands such as digging with a shovel or a garden tools. Being or using your knees is when you are lifting dirt or crop from the garden from the ground if ready to pick to the table. You also turn your head to

A behaviourist perspective suggests that all behaviour is observable, objective and learnt from experience. It is believed that behaviour can be learnt and reinforced through operant conditioning and unconscious physical response can be learnt through classical conditioning.

The Behaviourist approach believe that human beings are able to learn all types of behaviours through the environment they grow up in, its believes that we learn these behaviours through using theories, such as, Ivan Pavlov’s Classical Conditioning and Burrhus Frederic Skinner’s Operant Conditioning.

Smith (2001) defines psychology as the study of the mind. One major subset within the broad study of psychology is popularly known as cognitive psychology. According to Aukrust (2011), cognitive psychology is a branch of psychology that deals with the study of mental processes which includes how people or individuals think, perceive, learn and remember. As a part of the larger cognitive science field, this psychology branch is by means related to other disciplines such as neuroscience, linguistics and philosophy. Processes included in cognition are judging, thinking, remembering, knowing and problem solving.
Behavioral analysis is how a person’s behaviours are based on the individuals’ personal history and past experiences. This is different then radical behaviorism, which Skinner fell into. Skinner believed that mental events, such as thinking, were not needed to explain behavior.
Cognitive psychology is the study of mental processes. The American Psychological Association defines cognitive psychology as "The study of higher mental processes such as attention, language use, memory, perception, problem solving, and thinking."[1] Much of the work derived from cognitive psychology has been integrated into various other modern disciplines of psychological study including social psychology, personality psychology, abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, and educational psychology.

Behavioral theory focuses on environmental influences and learned behavior through reinforcement, both positive and negative, punishment, and modeling. This a simple and logical concept and is expressed throughout not only humans, but in other species as well. A common example of behavioral theory at work is demonstrated when a young child touches a hot stove top for the first time. The child touches the hot
The Behavioural approach (also called the learning theory) focuses on the belief that our environment, e.g. people, experiences and learning, influences the development and behaviour of an individual whilst thinking the internal functions, such as thoughts and cognition, are impossible to observe, so they are not apart of the scientific approach to psychology. This theory is also based on the concept of ‘explaining behaviour through observation. Behaviourists assume individuals are born as a blank state (tabula rasa), meaning they do not think biology and cognitive functions influence our behaviour, only our environment does. A large idea that the theory hold is that behaviour can be broken down into stimulus-response units. Stimuli are anything environmental that triggers an individuals’ senses, for example, a student being asked to complete an assignment (stimulus) would respond by completing the assignment. Stimulus-response theories form the basis of classical or operant conditioning, which suggests animals and humans can learn through the relation of a response to any certain stimuli.
