The United States has made great innovations in the past century to ensure that all people have the same chances to better themselves. While steps have been taken to bring about equality from Roe v. Wade to legalizing same sex-marriage in every state still more can be done—especially in the field of racial inequality.

Institutional racism is still prevalent in the United States. Racial groups are both denied or granted certain rights. Although there may no longer be lynch mobs or Jim Crow, there is still rampant racism from New York to Jena, Louisiana. Society should disband its racial conventions in programs such as affirmative action. It should instead adopt a new system based on many more factors than a person’s ethnic background.

As time goes on, the people of America continue to discover and create more issues that have affect on each person in the country. Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers took a knee during the playing of the “Star Spangled Banner” in protest of police brutality and racial injustice in America. Since then, NFL players from all over the country have joined in on this silent protest.

Racial inequality has been a problem plaguing this country since its inception. Even today we can see the extent of the issue in almost every facet of life. There is racial inequality within the workforce, resulting in a vast differential between incomes of different races. Racial inequality also lives within our health care system, meaning that millions of Americans are not covered by government issued health insurance, but the majority of those not covered belong to a racial minority. The most devastating place that racial inequality has managed to creep into is our education system, basically setting many American children up for failure.

Since the beginning of time, racial inequality has influenced the way society feels and treats one another. In the times of slavery in the United States, white people were in control of almost everything, resulting in the oppression of black people. This dark period in American history has shaped the country to what it is now. With racism being very much alive in present day society, black Americans are still fighting for equality throughout the country. Although speaking out against racial discrimination is the humane thing to do, many people in present day society have chosen to stay silent and not take action. Racism is such an ancient controversial part of history. America has come a long way since slavery and the famous decade for civil rights in the 1960s. Some people may even say that those acts in the 1960s civil rights movement achieved racial equality. Then, what societal issues does modern America struggle with? Certain people may be blinded and think that America’s racial issue is far gone in the past. Many people believe that every American citizen in this country is treated fairly regardless of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. But, then the other half of America knows this is a lie, a curtain over our eyes. Though, certain laws have been passed, and America has made many accomplishments in making a majority of these groups

The problem of inequality doesn’t seem to be one that is going away anytime soon. Until changes are made in the way minorities are treated in this country the problem will fester and grow.

All racial inequality are still around in the world. Any inequality is wrong, and every person is equal to one another. Racial inequality is wrong, a person should not think a skin color is superior over another. “The most divisive issue in America race relations today is affirmative action-programs designed to increase minority presence in work places and universities. Most of these programs were begun in the 1970’s to move up for past racial discrimination and many Americans believe they are still needed.”

Racial inequality is quite a hot topic in our society. Not everyone sees eye to eye, but racism is embedded into our very way of life. “Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics” (ADL, 2017). Race wasn’t developed for the way people use to in modern society. Scientists used race to classify the differences between each type of group of individuals. Science played a crucial role in the development of racism. Whether people want to believe it or not, every person has either witnessed a form of racism or has been a victim. Most people don’t intentionally commit these actions, but the society that we live in indirectly degrades certain types of people, while the opposite race benefit. While there are many aspects that racial inequality affect, I believe that education is one of the biggest problems. Along with that, I believe there are major problems in the employment and income area that needs to be addressed. Health and residential segregation are also factors that play a role in racial inequality. On the bright side, we as a community of diverse and very unique people have made some strides in the name of equality for all. However, we have a long road ahead if we want to call the United States of America a land that is truly free.

Al Sharpton an American civil rights activist talked about racial discrimination in America today and said “As I often say, we have come a long way from the days of slavery, but in 2014, discrimination and inequality still saturates our society in modern ways. Though racism may be less blatant now in many cases, its existence is undeniable.” ("Al Sharpton." BrainyQuote.com) Racial discrimination is a pessimistic reality that affects everyone in our society. Racism has destroyed and ended many lives but continues to happen due to this country being burdened by a racial blockade.. The legacy of discrimination continues to weigh on present-day. Current day discrimination persists through American life in various aspects like criminal justice,employment opportunities,educational services, mass media,wages,politics etc.

Discrimination has been prevalent throughout American history. This can be presented through the civil rights and women suffrage movements. The process to establish laws to advocate rights for people of color or women, has been a slow and painful struggle. The national government eventually made laws to prevent social injustice and to expand equality. Nonetheless, the relationship between race and gender has created a racial gap in socio-economic status. Skin color still matters in 21st Century America.

Now and then people have asked questions about how far we have come with race relations. We have leaped forward in strides and have made big steps toward King's dreams of equality, but there is still much more to be done. Martin Luther King Jr. made a lot of progress in issues of segregation and integration, but even today there are still racial clashes. Americans of every color still deal with the same issues and problems that civil rights activists then dealt with. Although African Americans have many more opportunities now, 24% (10.0 million people) were still in poverty in 2015 and 8.8% of African Americans are unemployed. Examples of discrimination are on the news almost every day and students see it in their schools repeatedly.
