The decision of whether or not to place an aging parent into a long-term care facility, or to try and to keep them in their own home or yours is one that many American families are facing each day. Factors in dealing with this decision are too numerous to count but we will address a few of them in the following paper, like the financial aspects, psychosocial, and meeting the overall needs of our ever aging parents.
The risk that a person turning 65 will need nursing home care is very likely. According to Fledstein, he informs to the reader that, as we age, it is likely that Long-Term Care (LTC) is needed (p. 566). Eventually, LTC is needed more after the age of 65. In addition, 19 percent will be in a nursing home for more than five years (p. 568). In a similar case, a patient who does not have family members to take care from, they are in need of LTC. According to June Schroeder, a certified financial planner (CFP) and a Registered Nurse (RN), she shares her story on Aging.com on how she had to spend down on medical bills and assets for her aunt to qualify for Medicaid. In other words, her aunt could not qualify for Medicaid because she had too much
Caring for the elderly and disabled has always been a relevant issue among American’s; however, not until recently has it become a significant issue within society. Change has occurred in the past couple decade as the workforce dynamics have transitioned from the family based farm living to the inner city, college educated worker who follows opportunity. Decades ago it was common place to have an aging relative live with the family in a multi-generational home; however, that is no longer a practical option in many cases. Although this transitioning of society has created a new issue and that is providing care to those elderly or disabled members of society who cannot rely on the support of family
Many times, residents are put in the assisted livings or nursing homes because their family can’t take care of them. As a result, they lose much independence, and their health tends to decline faster than if they were

Home care for the elderly is too expensive. While the care is not free, when compared to a nursing home or assisted living community, in home senior care is very affordable. Of course, some of the costs are going to depend on the type of services provided. Does your loved one require partial assistance or 24-hour care? Do they need non-medical support or private-duty nursing? Beyond the financial cost, consider the emotional and social costs of care as well. In home care has been shown to speed the healing process while reducing stress and
If you've ever thought about senior homecare, you've probably heard or read some home care myths that made you stop and think twice about it. With only a third to a half of seniors receiving homecare going through a professional care agency, many family care providers wonder what the reluctance is. Perhaps some of the myths are true?
The first person or people who should be caring the burden for elderly care lies within their own family. Within the American culture many family members prefer to put their older members in elder homes. My family is originally from Mexico so I am aware of the family values embedded within Mexican culture. I have never seen a Mexican family have their elderly family members live or be taking care of by somebody else that is not a relative. We live in an American society that does not value the care and need for the elderly and prefer to leave up to state and national departments. Since they were the ones who created the generation in which we live in we should be grateful and provide them with the best care possible within our own homes. Many elders who live in homes receive poor or abusive care from faculty. This is not an environment that we should be letting them live in especially if they are your parents. If they lived there lives to watch you grow and take care of you we should be returning them the favor and taking care of them until their final days. The only exception that I have for not taking care of them would be if they have a serious disability or if they are mentally ill. There are illness where the son or daughter of the family member is not able to care for that person because of circumstances that out of their reach. In this situation it would be ok to admit them to home where they are professionally prepared to care for them and have the resources needed
One thing every living organism has in common on this planet-- age. No one wants to age or face the fact that aging is inevitable. However, since it’s impossible to beat the never ending time clock that is life; everyone wants to be as comfortable as possible when age finally does catch up with them. When the majority of people think of comfortability in old age, they think of living in their own homes and being surrounded by their loved ones. Not many individuals want to be placed into a nursing home type facility because they can’t imagine themselves being comfortable that way. Nonetheless, even though being placed in a home does take away some of an elderly person’s independence, usually the independence lost is in activities that person can no longer do for themselves. Indeed, nursing homes do have their own set of scary stories behind them; life lost, independence lost, and privacy lost, yet many of those stories are outdated. Upon investigation, it would be easy for anyone to scare themselves out of a nursing facility due to the stories that are out there. Yet, upon even further research people would be able to see how far the United States has come in their development and evolution of nursing care facilities. The care of the elderly in the form of nursing homes has faced a tough evolution starting off with a harsh past, to what nursing homes are like now, and what people can expect for the future of these homes.
There may come a time in your loved one's life when they are no longer able to perform all of the tasks they used to without assistance. Despite their need for support, your senior loved one may decide they want to remain at home and enjoy their independence and freedom. While nursing homes and assisted living facilities serve a certain segment of the population quite well, others enjoy the quality of life that comes from living in their own home. For families that are able to provide the necessary care, arrangements can be made to make this work. Others, however, are left wondering how their senior loved one is going to receive the service and support they require to remain safe. Thankfully,
Assisted living communities are a becoming a more fiable choice among seniors and the aging population. Many senior
If your parent seems to think your suggestion is out of line, encourage them to consult other people whose opinions they respect. They might talk with a clergy member or their doctor, for example. There may be another relative closer to their own age who can help them understand why assisted living is a good idea.
Taking care of the individuals that are getting older takes many different needs. Most of these needs cannot be given from the help of a family. This causes the need of having to put your love one into a home and causing for the worry of how they will be treated. It is important for the family and also the soon to be client to feel at home in their new environment. This has been an issue with the care being provided for each individual, which has lead to the need of making sure individuals have their own health care plan.
A vast majority of the population that is nearing retirement age tend to experience a feeling of "unfinished business" and begin planning their golden years around accomplishing them. As retirees, many may start a new hobby they've always wanted to do, write a book, traveling or even going back to school in some cases. So one method a retiree can maximise the time available to accomplish all of those things is to enter a senior housing facility, and be free from the burden of caring for a home.
Thesis Statement People think that putting their loved ones in senior home centers or assisted living centers will benefit them due to the way they think they're going to be treated. When in reality most of the time it's not that way. Many are very unorganized, they abuse the elderly, and patients aren't getting the attention they need. Senior homes are meant to make the patients feel like they're at home.
