Child Labour as defined by the International Labour Organisation, work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development. This includes interference with their schooling. Child Labour in extreme forms also involves children being separated from their families, exposed to serious hazards and despises or left to fend for themselves on the streets of large cities at an early age. In Cote d’ Ivoire, a major child labour form is agriculture where children as young as five work in Cocoa farms for cocoa industries, which have been the major revenue of 60% of export for Cote d’ Ivoire. Examples of actions that could be taken include funding for schools, monitoring of cocoa plantations, spreading awareness of the cruelty of child labour to households.
However, there are many pros and cons to consider of the implications if child labour were to be stopped, from the different perspectives of the different stakeholders involved.
The pros will be first discussed. Stopping child labour in Cote d’ Ivoire would definitely help the children to be free from physical and mental scars. Child labour, according to various research, will leave physical and especially psychological scars on the children involved. These scars are caused by abusive actions by plantation owners, especially those who require the children to complete an exaggerated amount of work before they get to rest or eat their meals. (Hawksley, 2011).Even if they eventually get out of this cycle and be free from child labour when they grow up, the scars take a long time, or may never heal. This deprives them of their whole life's success. Thus, putting an end to child labour will save many lives by allowing these children to experience childhood and achieve success in various areas of their
