“ETHIOPIA IS BLEEDING.” Well-educated, trained, and experienced sons and daughters of the motherland are flooding from the ups, downs, hills, and mountains to the rest of the world. There is no much more affected nation by the brain drain than Ethiopia in the continent – Africa. In Ethiopia the brain drain issue is becoming controversial. It can be mouth fully said that regarding this human capital flight, no national consensus is reached at all. The government and the intellectual public look at the case from different points of view. Of course, both the good and the bad perspectives have merits, and demerits. On the one hand, the nation can neither control the outflow of skill nor ignore its consequences on the larger community, because of
Brain drain is the migration of skilled workers and professionals to the United States or other countries in hopes of better pay, who are also desperately needed by their home countries. It leaves a temporary void of skilled workers in the countries they are from. In the United States, those skilled workers contribute to society and economy benefits from it. Illegal immigration can sometimes be benefitted because such people are willing to work for less or “under the table” which can help business owners prosper for a time being because their costs go down.
The reason behind this is that migration of highly skilled professionals in pursuit of better opportunities is a growing concern in the present world (Watts, 2002). There are questions that arise from such situations including the reasons that prompt such professionals to leave their countries and the consequences of immigration especially on the sector of social productivity (Zweig & Changgui, 2013). Additionally, there is also a concern regarding the policies that should be put in place to monitor the immigration of professionals into the United
The Ethiopian Jews often immigrate to Israel with little to no education or skill so the absorption centers provide trainings that allow the Ethiopians the opportunity to learn and enhance their work skill. In Shira Offer’s The Socio-economic Integration of the Ethiopian Community in Israel, it states that Ethiopian Israelis have substantially lower levels of education, lower employment rates, and are more likely to have low-skilled occupations.” The absorption centers will provide an outlet for the next generation: the ones who grow up in the centers. With the educational opportunities, it will be easier for the next generation to adapt and leave the centers with
What is a brain drain? It is the emigration of highly educated and skilled Canadians to the United States. Does Canada suffer from a Brain Drain? This is a question that economists have been trying to answer for a decade now and have conducted different studies resulting to different conclusions about this issue. There are some economists that believe that yes Canada is suffering from a brain drain if not now it will be soon, amongst those economists are Don DeVortez and Samuel Laryea who prepared a study of C.D howe Institute. They claimed that Brain Drain is real and is costing Canada Tax Payers millions of dollars. Then on the other side of the debate we have economists like John Helliwell, who
Particularly when looking at returns to education and work experience, individuals migrating from countries with different socio-economic backgrounds may not possess human capital that is transferable in the host country.
I went to a country where the first coffee plant was ever found located on the horn of Africa. I do not remember much about the trip, but I still remember enough to make this essay. Ethiopia is the birthplace of my sweet mom and the place I first saw my grandparents. The main reason I went was to see my extraordinary family that was in Ethiopia. During the trip I had a great time, especially when I went to the beach for the first time (with my family).
My country, Ethiopia, is in the Horn of Africa. Surrounded by Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Sudan and South Sudan, it is a medium sized country that has a population of around 87.9 million. It is also the most populous landlocked country in the world and second most populous in all of Africa. Its total area is 1.1 million square kilometers, which is the same as 420,000 square miles, and its capital is Addis Ababa, which is also its largest city, with a population of around 3,384,569. Addis Ababa is where the African Union is based and is where the United Nations Economic Commissions for Africa headquarters is.
Ethiopia is a country found in the mid-east of Africa. It is surrounded by several countries including Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Eritrea. High amounts of rainfall in Ethiopia has resulted in the death and homelessness of thousands of people. Around 100 people have lost their lives in the past month in Ethiopia due to flash floods and landslides caused by their high rainfall, at least 20,000 have become homeless because of the same reason and even more have lost valuable cattle and crops. Ethiopia has a population of over 75 million and it has been rapidly increasing in the last 2 decades resulting in the construction of more and more buildings causing land for farming and cattle to be used up. The majority of
This term is typically used in a negative connotation, however, I believe that it is actually a positive thing. In a society as in any living organism, there has to be a cycle of life and death. A “Brain-Drain” acts as the virus that leads to the collapse of a failing country. If the citizens of a nation wish to leave it, then they should not only have the right to, they should be helped in doing so. A country has no special claim to those who grow up in it, a country must earn that right. Afghanistan and Iraq had their chance, and now we need to give these people their
The interview with Belay Abebe provided a first person experience of what happened during the Ethiopian Red Terror. Throughout the interview, Abebe answered questions that provided insight on how Mengistu took control of the Ethiopian government, cruel things that Derg did to citizens, and personal encounters with the party themselves. Abebe stated that the Red Terror originally occurred because Derg had forcefully switched Ethiopia to a communist state, and in the process of doing so, they took away land and businesses away from the citizens. Because of this, many of the Ethiopian citizens started to peaceful protest against the government. Abebe states
It is recommended that we all return back to the basic positive principle of migration. Immigration has benefit documented historically and agreed to be advantageous. Migrants pool in numerous new ideas and creativity, individually they contribute to the economy in the country of abode and often also improve the economy of their original nation by sending remittances to their loved ones. .
Many people are leaving their homes in villages in Ethiopia in search of a better life for themselves and their families. A study shows, "Ethiopia, with more than 62 million people, is the second most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa and its rate of population growth is among the highest in the world" (Ezra 65). This quote confirms the increasing population, the decreasing resources, and the increasing migration from Ethiopia. With the population rising at such a high rate, it only makes sense for people to want to leave a poor, crowded area for a better, more suitable place to settle. Another quote from the same author: “The multilevel approach shows that, overall, males tend to migrate less often than females, but when reasons for migrating are considered, male tend to move more often than females for economic reasons. Females mainly migrate for reasons pertaining to marriage” (Ezra 87). This quote provides some reasons to the migration in Ethiopia. Women marry off into other families, often those in different villages or communities. This allows for the women to get a better life with someone new and in a new area, although that might not always be the case. Men, however, do not leave their villages to marry off into another family. The male has to find a way to provide for his wife and children any way he can. This could mean leaving the community to find
In recent decades countries have noted the substantial benefits these highly skilled and educated immigrants create once established in the visiting country. Which is why between the decades of 1990 to 2000 there was an increase in the migration of highly skilled immigrants in various developing countries around the world. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, an international organization assisting governments in tackling the economic, social and political challenges of a globalized economy, provides data of the worldwide distribution of high skilled immigrants. In 2000, the United States was the leading country containing more than 10 million highly-skilled immigrants an increase of over 5 million highly skilled immigrants
In this respect, it is worthy of mention that such a situation with the migration is the result of the recent trend in the world economy which is characterized by processes which are generally called globalization. The process of globalization is overwhelming and involves practically all countries of the world with rare exceptions which
The FDRE government intended to build a middle-income economy by 2025. The government believed that accomplishing such goal without taking global warming and climate change in to consideration would result in a radical increase in greenhouse gas production. (………..). In order to overcome the problem of greenhouse gas emission, unsustainable use of natural resource and at the same time to adopt and increase Ethiopia resilience to the effect of climate change, the FDRE government drafted Climate Resilience Green Economic Policy, which was integrated into the country’s five year Growth and Transformation Plan, in 2012.
