There are many different opposing views and opinions regarding the use of personal electronic devices in the classroom. Whether it is beneficial or not, many schools have begun to allow students to use their own personal devices such as cell phones and laptop computers in the classroom. Obviously, there are many pros as well as many cons to these policies, and if students are allowed to use their devices, there must be rules and policies to prevent the abuse of this resource. Overall, electronic devices are an amazing resource that should be used whenever possible. We are moving into a digital age, and having devices that can access the internet is extremely common. Why shouldn't students be allowed to use any resource that will be available to them later on in life? Personal electronic devices are a beneficial tool that should be allowed to be used in the classroom. While there are disadvantages, these should be remedied through the enforcement of policies to restrict the use of these devices.
There are many pros to using personal devices in the classroom. First, allowing students to have phones gives them instant communication to the outside world on demand. As grim as it sounds, far too often we hear about terrorism in our schools that may have been prevented if a student could have called 911 or an emergency number sooner. In addition, many schools are unable to afford enough computers for each student. If a student has their own personal computer at home that could be
Phones can be used for mobile learning and be cost effective for schools. 70% of schools that had cell phone bans in place five years ago are reversing their policy, because they see devices as a learning tool instead of a distraction. Educators are really seeing devices as a learning tool, not just something for entertainment. Even though some kids might abuse the policy of having phones, they can be put to good use. Smartphones allow you to access resources and material quickly before an exam. In some schools, students bring their own devices to save the school money, so they can buy stuff like pencils, printers, paper, and etc.
Hmm, phones in the classroom! What do you think? That is a debate between billions of people in the world today. Children all over the world have phones, but they can not have them out during school hours. Cell phones are important to so many kids and adults. These devices have been around for so long, and many people can not live without them. All around the school campus, students are miserable without their phones. In the world today, about three-fourths of the U.S. population have phones. A cell phone is an important thing to some people. Without cell phones, kids wouldn't have access to their social media accounts like Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more. So take this into consideration, even if it is in one class, students should be allowed to get on their cell phones during school hours.
Students shouldn’t be allowed to have phones in school because students can easily use them to cheat on tests and quizzes. According to U.S. News “More than one third of teens with cell phones admit to having stored information on them to look at during a test or texting friends about answers.” (Miners, “More than”). Many people already use phones to cheat now even when phones aren’t allowed, so allowing phones to be present in the classroom will give students easier opportunities to cheat. Cheating is also unfair to the students who study and work hard to make grades. So phones not being allowed in classrooms is a better choice so students will study and learn instead of just cheating using their phone.
If we have cellphones in school, students can look up facts up easier and faster than you can do on our chromebooks. If we are allowed to have are phones and we are playing a game, and your volume is up it can distract the entire class if your phone is making noise. If you are in math or science class and you need a calculator you will be able to bring it up faster than you do on your chromebook. If we are allowed to have our phones we will be able to easily study for tests and might study longer because it is on your own device. They will like to do it on their phone so they can listen to music and stuff like that.
The next topic of discussion is cell phones in classrooms. The article being summarized is entitled The Only Thing We Have to Fear is…120 Characters. In this article, Kevin Thomas and Christy McGee (2012) make arguments for the use of cellphones in classrooms in spite of the fact that 69% have banned them. This paper responds to the many reasons for disallowing their use, and then it goes on to highlight some ideas about why cell phones should be used as educational tools. Both sides of the discussion certainly make valid points.
Tap Tap, Tap. Students are constantly using cellphones in class when they should be paying attention to important materials in class. Some schools have banned cell phones. Some schools are taking advantage of cell phones and trying to them to open new possibilities for new learning experience. A cell phone is a piece of technology that can have a positive and negative effect. For example you can use it find out what you need to study. It depends on the user. Cell phones can also be used to cheat and then you wouldn’t be learning anything, except how to cheat. Do you really think that we should allow these with children that don’t know how to use them correctly? I wouldn’t. Although cell phones can open new opportunities to learning, we can not assume that students will use them for academic reasons. Therefore, cell phones are not the best thing to have in school, they shouldn't be allowed in school to ensure a good environment for the future generations of mankind. The negative effects from cell phones can distract kids from the subject they are learning in school, reduce the amount of respect students show teachers, and make schools less empathetic. The only thing that schools will get from allowing cellphones in class is nothing but trouble.
Phone technology has been upgrading and updating for years now, and that’s obvious, and that means that this generation is filled with it. While it’s upgrading it’s also becoming more in demand than before. The world is starting taking it to another level, so there are also the downsides of these phones, the downsides that make this technology distracting, making people to beleive they shouldn’t be alowed in class. While it is true, phones can be a distraction sometimes, if the students are monitered the right way and know exactly what they are doing, phones just might be able to work out. With proper use, phones should be alowed in school.
Cell phones should be allowed in school because they can further students ability to learn and/or stay focused. Audrey Watters wrote, “And that’s probably one of the most important observations: Many students already carry a powerful computing device in their pockets, while oftentimes much of the technology hardware at schools is woefully out-of-date.” This is a major reason why cell phones should be allowed in school because in some schools that do not have the most updated technology there students do on their phones. By allowing cell phones in school, students have access to these powerful devices that can be utilized for free while increasing classroom resources. Watters continued to write, “Schools may find they have equipped student
Every teacher has a different policy on cell phone use in class. In past years, cell phones were essentially banned from classrooms while more recently teachers have been more lenient with their policy. Educational devices such as computers and online learning have been embraced by many school districts, while cell phones which offer the same effect on learning have been outlawed. Advancements in technology can provide students with a new learning tools where the learning tools will be used in the real world. Students who use cell phones to access research information are able to reach a wide variety of current information. Teachers are also able to teach students the proper way to use cell phones in a professional setting. Cell phones can also raise engagement levels in classes. In the article Cell Phones in the Classroom by George Engel and Tim Green, “There was an observable rise in class participation when cell phones were used in the class” (44). While cell phones were once considered a distraction, the way society uses cell phones has changed. Likewise, the purpose of cell phones has shifted from solely communication to a variety of benefits. Cell phones should be allowed in classrooms for educational uses because there are so many different ways to learn and study using them.
Although phones may be used to help students with work, North Eugene high school should ban phones because how much of a distraction they can be in a classroom. Schools that have banned phone at school, 82% of students have a phone on at school.(Document #3) If North Eugene at least has a policy with not having students bring the phones in class, that will help with test scores and participation in class. “Students with laptops had a lower test result than those without. The reason? They were not paying attention to their teachers. We should expect the same thing from cell phones.” (Document #6) When using technology at school it may help but there also needs to be an extent to where it needs to stop. Phone are not going to help with our
Many teachers believe that cell phones don’t belong in a classroom because there are several disadvantages. An example maybe a student who uses a cell phone in class has no intension in listening or paying attention to the teacher. This student has a short attention span who cares about socializing more than his/her education. Cell phones can be very disruptive; they can invade people’s privacy and can also be used as harassment or bullying. The usage of cell phones is creating a huge problem particularly when they are used in school.
Many places in society are setting policies on digital device. The principal at my school has also set policies on banning cell phones in school. Students should not be permitted to use cell phones in school. Using cell phones during school allows students to cheat. Students will be more distracted by cell phones and pay less attention to the teacher and to the lesson. Students have a higher chance of getting in trouble if they use cell phones in school rather than if they are not allowed to use digital devices in school.
In the article, “Why a Leading Professor of New Media Just Banned Technology Use in Class,” the author states that the use of technology while learning is not rationale. Professor Clay Shirky’s decision to ban students to use technology in his classroom is that those devices are distracting their learning. I do agree with Professor Shirky’s decision when he switched it from “allowed unless by request” to “banned unless required,” because this will not allow the students to use their device unless the professor allows them making the students feel a lot more restricted. Whereas if the devices are allowed unless the professor tells them to put it away, students will feel more at ease when they use their cell phones even when it is not related
Smartphones have become a part of everyone’s body. Almost everything can be done through smart phones. Paying bills, doing grocery, buying food, and more time consuming tasks can all be done almost instantly by smartphones. Many jobs and institutions today do not allow the use of smartphones during a certain time, especially schools. Prohibition of cell phones in school is a good idea to prevent students from getting distracted. However, high school students should be allowed to access their cell phones at school, because high school students are mature enough to use their cell phones productively and beneficially. Having access to internet is very important to high school students. Many students could not afford to have all kinds of devices, such as laptop, tablets, and cell phones. Entirely banning the usage of cell phones can make students hate the school causing them to be more arrogant.
Mobile phone is an indispensable item of modern people, some people want to work through mobile phones; some people need mobile phone emergency call; also some people need to record life. Although the phone to bring people a lot of convenience, the phone should be suitable for students to have? Do schools have the right to prohibit students from carrying mobile phones? According to modern trends, most students tend to have a cell phone. However, students carrying mobile phones in school may affect their learning. Schools have the right to prohibit students from using mobile phones in school, in order to enable students to more focused learning, and reduce the students' psychological comparisons.
