Pros And Cons Of Cosmetic Animal Testing

This is an annotated bibliography of animal testing and if it’s morally justified. There are many opinions on the results and the entire process that it takes to test a cosmetic product or a medicine on an animal. There are many alternatives and benefits to animal testing but is it really justified? Or are animals in potential danger.

In this paper there are three main topics that are going to be covered. They are alternatives to animal testing, animal testing in cosmetics, and the news in the cosmetic industry related to animal testing. For this paper there were four sources that were evaluated. All of them had a few things in common and through that it was easy to link them together through three different subtopics that will be evaluated later in this paper. This scenario exposes the life of rabbits, mice, dogs, pigs, cats, and many other animals used in cosmetic product testing. The topic of whether animal cosmetic testing is necessary or not has been a topic that many have put-off, but something that should be thought about. Since Ancient Greece, humans have used animals as means of learning more about the world. The first known vivisection was done by a Greek philosopher, Alcmaeon, in 450 B. C. E (“Animal Testing” NP). Since then, animals have had invasives tests performed on them, been killed, and been experimented on in the name of science or for profit. Some experiments are in order to demonstrate already known facts to students, others are to further medical knowledge, and some are to test drugs and cosmetics (“Animal Testing” NP). Scientific testing on animals has led to many medical discoveries. Animals are used, and have been used for millennia, in order to make products, procedures, and life in general safer for humans - stemming from the belief that human lives are more important than animals’. In order to moralize animal experimentation, people tend to draw attention to the benefits of animal experimentation and draw attention away from the cruelties and injustice committed towards animals. To lessen the suffering and lack of fairness of animals, people should find and use alternatives to animal experimentation.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) defines cosmetics as objects intended to be applied to the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance without affecting the body's structure or functions. Examples of cosmetics include skin cream, perfume, lipstick, makeup, shampoo, and hair color. Any ingredient used in a cosmetic also falls under the definition of a cosmetic. Products normally labeled as cosmetics are classified as drugs when a medical claim is made. For example, toothpaste is sometimes considered a cosmetic, but if it advertises cavity protection, then it is a drug.

Each year, thousands of animals are brutally tortured in laboratories, in the name of cosmetic research. A movement to ban animal testing for cosmetic purposes has been gaining popularity, with many companies hopping on the bandwagon against this research. New alternatives have been developed to eliminate the necessity to test on animals. This is only a small beginning of what is necessary to end these immoral acts. Animal testing in cosmetics is useless and cruel, and can be accomplished by other methods of research to end the suffering of animals.

The use of animal testing has been going on for a long time. Although there have been many cases where people try to stop it or try to convince people that it is wrong in today’s society it is still happening all over the world. This research paper will talk about how in today’s society is racing to discover cures for diseases. How humans have made advancements in the world we have also established the scientific evolution. By doing so our ethics and morals have failed to progress. The knowledge that we gain throughout the years is remarkable but it is our responsibility to use it wisely and ethically. We heartlessly torture and kill animals that we consider lesser beings. For something as simple as eye makeup hundreds of animals are tortured and blinded by test that are being done to them in laboratories where they are hardly being fed, often forced to live in filth, sometimes they even remove their vocal cords to keep them quiet. We pour cosmetic products into their eye and body parts to determine if it will have a harmful effect on humans. Animal’s posses the same emotions and feelings as humans and without any care they are subjected to pain. Mankind fails to give animals respect they deserve, they are treated with lifeless. Something that needs to be changed.

Over 1,000,000,000 animals are killed annually throughout the United States (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). In America alone, over 11,000 research facilities partake in experimenting with cosmetic chemicals on animals (Collins). The number of animals used for cosmetic testing is alarming. Animals and humans differ from one another biologically in many significant ways. Statistics display irrefutably that cosmetic chemical preclinical testing on animals are unreliable. Animal testing is not only wasteful and unreliable; it yields inaccurate results that cannot successfully be interpreted and applied to humans. Cosmetic testing on animals is unacceptable.

The year 1922 brought about the revelation that animal testing could not only be used to develop medical research but to ensure the safety of cosmetic products. With the consequences of ‘Lash Lure’ the issue of animal testing was brought to the forefront. Though it was not so much considered an issue but rather a necessity and the preferable option over risking the use of a possibly harmful cosmetic. Most of the tests are unreliable and inaccurate and called a “waste of animal life” as different species have various reactions to the product. Cosmetic brands such as Mac, Avon, Nars, Victoria Secret and many more have all been found to have chosen profit over principles, not thinking about the other better alternatives which don't cause animals pain. Clearly, scientists knowledge on treatment is based on millions of animal research to some extent. It seems to me that animal research is the key to medical treatment technology even if the testing is considered as unethical by majority of the general public. I believe people are morally aware of animal testing, still, these testing ensure the effectiveness and safety of treatment. Whether or not people accepts, it is comprehensible that we are becoming more flourish. Notwithstanding animal experimentation gives benefits to us, I have a loathing of cosmetic animal testing as it has no contribution to the medical field which people take advantage of animals and sacrifices them.

No doubt is this form of testing cruel, especially now that scientists have began developing new advanced ways to tests products that are quicker and more cost effective.
