Recognizing the Evaluative Standpoints
For years archeologists and other specialists have stressed and continue to stress the need for a professional code of ethics for the treatment of human remains. Moral phenomenology along with the controversy that surrounds ownership rights have been the primary concerns for those interested in the creation of such code. Jien Kim and Dawnie W. Steadman tackle the challenge by laying out ground rules that must be followed to ensure the development of an equitable set of conduct guidelines. In their article, “A Review of Codes of Ethics in the United States and Ethical Dilemmas Surrounding the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)” they unravel the complication of prognosticating ethical perplexity. Much of the haziness comes in, when deciding who should be entitled to what and why in varying scenarios. Cultural heritage---from Peru’s national Urban Identity to the State’s pseudo tradition identity--- influences the divergent roles archeology plays among different demographics while making ownership associations.

Being the touristic place that it is, Peru constantly faces many environmental stresses. Some of the most troubled people by these issues are the indigenous people and archeologists. However, the strenght of Peru’s national identity which resulted from Peru’s independance, keeps attracting tourists. This ongoing set of sustainability challeneges frames the ethical issue of who has right to claim archeological heritage. The multiple identities discussed iin the article including the pseudotraditional identity raises questions about indigenous

“Last Rights for Indian Dead” by Suzan Shown Harjo is an essay written that describes the desecration of Native American artifacts and remains and the call for action to put an end it. Harjo touches on the effects that the harboring and selling of these items causes. She speaks about the universities and the museums and their role in the problem; housing thousands of remains. One museum she speaks of houses over 19,000 remains. She also describes the desecration brought on by thieves digging up burial sites and taking what is not theirs.
The handling of human remains and sacred sites of prehistoric people still remains as a hunge controversial subject in the field of Anthropology. Archaeology are bounded by all kinds of laws and regulations, guidelines are strictly followed by archaeologists to ensure a legal, ethical, and professional conduct of archaeological research. Complex ethical issues arise when an archaeologist tries to excavate a prehistoric site. Archaeologists must be careful when handling Native American remains as they might violate laws if they mishandle the human remains. All these laws existed to protect the basic human rights for the Native Americans. In this paper, perspectives from both Native Americans and archaeological researchers would be discussed.
These issues with museums and other institutions has led many tribes to not only protest these collections and demand the most sacred items back, but to also develop their own institution that not only tell the real story of their people from a non scientific point of view, but also show the proper resect for the sacred and religious artifacts. Religious sights and objects are a piece of many different groups culture, many of which require a certain level of respect. Within the United States Native American groups are reclaiming these objects for their own
Kennewick Man is one of the most complete ancient skeletons found to date. The discovery initiated scholarly and public debate of the legal and ethical implications of anthropological study of Native American human remains. The Kennewick Man controversy has called into question the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)’s ability to balance tribal, museum, and archaeological interest in ancient human remains.
The federal government’s intentions are pure with the passing of NAGPRA. However, NAGPRA has a considerable number of debatable implications regarding Native Americans. To fall under NAGPRA’s jurisdiction, a tribe is required to have federal recognition. Federal recognition requires a cultural group, such as Native Americans, to abide by federal standards. Non-compliance is an issue prevalent today regarding institutions and companies; the lack of compliance is rooted in the absence of strong restrictions and penalties for institutions and companies. International politics inhibit the act of global reparation. International representatives and museum officials leading repatriation processes, results in a more efficient way of returning artifacts to the rightful owner without political restrictions. All in all, the Native American Graves Protection Act made significant important changes over the years, however, with ever advancing United States and American Indian Tribes the outdated act is in need of
The issue of artifacts that have been taken from their original homes has started some global debate. Some may say that the artifacts need to be returned to their place of origin or who found them. They may also say that there are laws saying that the artifacts should be returned. Others may say that no matter who the objects belong to the artifacts should remain in museums around the world. Artifacts should not be returned to their nations of origins.
Yes I agreed with the authors that a code of ethics should do more than establish minimum acceptable standards. As noted that, ethical behavior in any profession is about making correct judgment or decision that are based on established code of ethics. Businesses always drive the behavior that is expected in an organization. Successful businesses try to build high ethical culture from the top management level to the lowest and setting the standards for acceptable and unacceptable conduct in an organization.
This paper is a comparison between the codes of ethics of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC). This paper aims to present the similarities and differences between the two codes of ethics. There are two main sections on this paper. The first section presents the general similarities and differences of the two codes of ethics. The second section presents the similarities and differences of the two codes of ethics on three specific areas: Confidentiality, Sexual Intimacies and Informed Consent. The author used the codes of ethics of both organizations in the process of comparing and contrasting. The general comparison reveals that the
Virtue Ethics is neither deontological nor teleological, since it is concerned with neither duty nor consequences, but rather the state of the person acting. Aristotle believed that once you are good, good actions will necessarily follow, and this belief is at the centre of Virtue Ethics. Rather than defining good actions, Virtue Ethics looks at good people and the qualities that make them good. The non-normative theory, although very effective in determining the morality of individuals, is particularly flawed when applied to whole societies. This weakness is largely due to its imprecision and abstraction; however, before these weaknesses can be considered, it is necessary to give an account of the theory itself.
When most think of philosophy a list of people come to mind. You have your “greats” such as Plato, Nietzsche, and of course Aristotle. However, this does not mean that their ideas cannot be challenged and questioned, as no one is above criticism. Aristotelian Virtue Ethics have a major flaw that strikes at the heart of the idea. There is a severe lack of guidance both in what a virtue is, and what happens when they conflict. The mains question is, is one virtue more important than another?
There are many pros and cons associated with developing community ethics committees. The cons are associated with getting people to participate and getting qualified people to be on the committee. In small communities like I live in, there are few people who want to participate in what they consider politics. I would be fearful that this would be considered either politics or be considered too much like a judge and jury situation. Many people want no part of helping make decisions for other people that may have an impact on their life or the outcome of an important situation.
The code of ethics and conduct is a written set of rules and regulations that provides guidance to employees of an organization on how to conduct themselves and carry out their duties in line with the organization’s principles. The code of ethics and conduct is also be backed up by suitable disciplinary actions. A code of ethics and conducts helps employees deal with ethical issues and other gray areas that they face as they execute their daily activities. An effective code of ethics and conduct is required for an organization to run smoothly and maintain a positive image. Having an ineffective code of ethics and conduct is almost like having none.
In the Code of Ethics of American Counseling Association and The Code of Ethics of National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, there are some similarities and differences from each code of ethics. The similarities between the two codes were: they both describes the ethics of counseling and professionalism in counseling.” Professional counseling is a therapeutic relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals” (American Counseling Association, 2017). Professionalism in counseling is very important. A professional counselor should abide by the code of ethics and can diagnose mental health disorders. Both code of ethics also discussed with any professional that a individual is in has to follow all rules to the Code of Ethics.
