Have you ever wondered, is technology good or bad? Sure your parents have told you it is bad to stare at your phone all day, but why? “It’ll make you hunched and it is damaging to the brain.” Staring at your phone before you go to bed can make is harder to sleep at night. This is most likely something that you hear every day. Sometimes I wonder are these real problems? Those are the negative effects of technology but there are also scientifically proven positive effects. Hence why I’m here! Today, this lovely day, I’ll be stating pros and cons of modern day technology, Let’s go!
Firstly, let’s start off positively and go through the pros or good/positive effects of technology. I want you to imagine you are in a classroom, whether or not you are still in school or not, and think of how a simple laptop or iPad could help you explore the science, math, history, or just whatever subject you like and learn or further more understand the objective of a topic. “Using technology in a classroom allows you to experiment more in pedagogy”(Top Hat 6 pros and cons of technology, pg1) Secondly, staying with educational values, technology is fun and when student or children in general, yes, even those who are children at heart, what to and enjoy learning further. Leaving the educational value of technology is spread world wide. It has been proven that playing video games can boost and build up a person's self confidence. When someone has self confidence they are constantly conquering
Technology has always been a controversial subject between conservative people and innovators. Some people believe that it is a great tool to connect cultures and improve education and innovation in our society today, but others view it as a menace in our lives. “Growing Up Tethered” by Sherry Turkle and “George Orwell...Meet Mark Zuckerberg” by Lori Andrews both view technology as a dangerous tool. They believe in the many drawbacks of technology and the harm it can do to our lives with no explanation of the positive effects it has had on our society. “Our Future Selves” by Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen plays the role of a positive look at technology and its role in our lives today. It gives examples of how advancing technology helps us and improves so many peoples’s lives. We can use Schmidt and Cohen’s essay as a lens to view the other two texts and gain a different understanding of what they are writing about.
There are many positives that come with the use of technology. For example, students may travel the world in a class period. They can view different important documents through history or visit a museums for different parts of the world. These are things that if not for technology many would not ever be able to experience in their lifetimes. So technology is good for the exposure that student can experience within a classroom. It also allows students to become active learners by going online and searching topics that being taught. This makes them responsible for their learning.
Though there are some positive effects, the adverse impact of technology on education has been extraordinary. The technology community has worked hard to bring useful technology into our classrooms, all with good intentions to broaden our knowledge. With these good intentions also came about unwanted side effects such as distraction and disruption in the classroom. I can clearly remember many of my teachers yelling at us to put our cell phones, iPods, and iTouch phones away especially during lecture and exams. The yelling was not without just cause, students cheated with their devices along with updating their Facebook pages during class too.
Many people have many different views of technology and how it is effecting our lives. Some completely love it, others despise it and the rest are just kind of in the middle. Within the many debates on whether we should be for or against these three authors, Wortham, Gladwell, and Carr, seem to argue over the fact of how technology is affecting our brains that causes chaos within us and our outside world.
Throughout the vast history of humanity, humans have always used their innovative and cognitive skills to create tools to better improve their chances at survival on this planet. This technology advancement first began in the Stone Age when man fist discovered that stone could be utilized as both a harvesting tool and hunting weapon; which gradually developed into spears, bows and arrows, and swords. And as time pressed on, one of the most important and influential inventions since the beginning of time was designed in the shape of a circle: the wheel. However, unlike in earlier times, the evolution of technology in the past 60 years
Many of us wonder if technology is affecting society for the better, or for the worse. I believe there are major issues on the rise with today’s trending technologies. However, like most thing’s, there are both pro’s and con’s to the way technology affects our society. It has a way of giving us new experiences, but in some situations technology can actually take away certain experiences. I’d like to explain my reasoning for those beliefs, and better explain that it’s not that technology is good or bad, it just depends what we choose to do with it, and how we let it affect our daily lives.
There are many benefits of technology in the classroom starting with kindergarten. These four benefits would be it enriches basic skills, provides motivation, broadens children’s horizons, and prepares them for the workforce. As this is not as much of a problem for younger children as it is older, technology is still a force that continually helps. Technology in classrooms can accelerate the basic skills of kids. Technology can make children more interested in what they are learning and then they will learn it faster. Technology is a lot more stimulating and interactive for children. The interactiveness is was really helps children and anyone learn the best (Hatch, 5). In Andelic’s article, The Impact of Information Technologies on Preschool Child Development, it says “As the old Chinese proverb says: “What I hear I forget, what I see I remember, what I do I understand,”(Andelic, 262). This statement is very true and something all teachers should go by. When someone does something, that is how they learn and the thing they will remember the most. Doing and being interactive is the real way to learn something to its full extent. Technology is also very motivational for children. For children, technology is viewed more as a fun thing because of the stimulation it provides. This can really motivate children to want to learn more because they truly enjoy it and have fun while learning. Interactive games are very motivational because the gratification of winning and advancing to
Many people tend to believe technology is more harmful than it is helpful. You have had to hear how the internet totally corrodes children 's social skills and contributes to illiteracy. It is no secret the internet can be a filthy place and innocent children can easily fall as prey to online predators. Although the internet can fall into all of these negative catagories, the fact still remains that there are also many scholar benefits of allowing your children access to the internet. As the internet can now be accessed from the tip of our fingers from mobile devices like smartphones, tablets and laptops, innovated tecnology can encourage creativity and intelligence in children. Students nowadays mostly learn through the internet via
Young people spend 27 or more hours a week on the Internet (Anderson). As society moves on, technology will keep diffusing and changing drastically; opening more possibilities for newer and undiscovered innovations to take over. Technology can be found anywhere from phones to cars that people drive every day. As technology advances, scientists and doctors have started an altercation between those who believe new tech will teach communities and strengthen our knowledge and others who believe that inventing untested gadgets will only corrupt the nation and affect students at work. Although people view technology as an important tool of the future, technology can be more harmful to society as students become distracted, leading to health concerns, and influencing people to cyberbully.
We no longer live in the moment, instead we look directly at a device to see what is happening in the world. This stuck out to me when I entered high school, because we no longer used traditional resources, such as textbooks, notebooks, or pencils, and we began to just use one tool; a laptop. I think that with technology comes positive and negative factors, which influenced my learning while in high school. For one, I learned to become tech savvy in many different areas. I began to learn different formatting in writing, including M.L.A. and A.P.A., which I later used during college. Technology in education systems allow students to broaden their spectrum of learning and truly open their eyes to what is possible for generations to come. The more advanced we become in technology, the more our society will continue to progress into higher
Have you ever thought about the pros and cons of technology? Technology can be very helpful don't you think? Although you have to agree with me that Technology can have disadvantages too. Technology is improving in many ways along ¨ with shift in society and the way that we think and operate is also coming along as a consequence to the technological advances. ¨ (7 biggest pros, and cons of Technology) There has been a lot of debate on if technology is good for society or not, but in order to develop an opinion you have to hear about both of the sides first. Pros, or Cons?
So far I have looked mostly at the benefits of technology being used by children within education and how it can help on several platforms and levels, but what about the negatives? Is the age of the screen more of a hindrance to our productivity and does this distract us from our learning? In the 19th century when the system was designed, learning and schooling were the most interesting thing children did, there was very little distractions outside of learning besides friends and chores. Nowadays children are bombarded with constant entertainment and distraction from social to gaming and big mix of both in-between. in the book technology, and Culture the authors talk about the fact parents, teachers and researchers are worried about the effects on technology ad why “there have been adult anxieties about what children see and know through this medium” (various authors-Children, Technology, and Culture:107) So what exactly is it people are worried about? With education in mind, the big problem comes with children’s focus. How can you expect a child to want to stay in school working out of textbooks when they can immerse themselves in games tackling and solving much bigger problems than what a textbook can provide. It could be argued that surely gamification is the answer, placing badges, leaderboards and awards into education will give it the drive it needs to stand out and engage children. This is very much the opposite of what has happened to educational software. As Gabe
Technology, in and of itself, is great. Whether the technology is a computer or a smartphone, it is helpful to have. Now students do not have to rifle through multiple encyclopedias trying to find information; they can quickly search something up via the internet. It has made getting information easier than ever. With that being said, there are positives and negatives in technology, which will be explored. Technology, especially devices that can connect to the internet, when used correctly, is a useful tool to students, teachers, and can provide instantaneous information. However, in some cases, technology can quickly become detrimental to students and teachers and can hinder both groups, especially the students, if they cannot afford the technology.
The first benefit that technology has in the classroom is the ability for students and educators to have any information that they need at their fingertips. When trying to teach a concept teachers can refer their students to specific web searches, games, or other resources that can be found on the internet. In the same way though having instant gratification through being able to look up anything on the internet can affect the way that students learn. Instead of doing work on their own students have the ability to type problem into a search engine and it will likely give them the answer for their
In todays society technology is becoming more popular in our school systems, and even in our workforce. Many people may argue that technology is not good for students, but I disagree. Technology in the classroom is very important for students not only for their social, or learning lives but also when they get into the workforce. If students learn technology in their early years they will not have a difficult time when they enter the workforce to find that there is a lot of technology being used.
