I agree with your statements especially with teachers communicating with parents on strategies to help Els students with their learning. It was weird to know that some cultures don’t connect with the schools, they have it as that learning environment is for the classroom. Additionally, It was nice to read in Chapter 10 that program was created to help Els families such as Hmong Literacy Project that helps preserve their culture in their languages as well as in English.

The Texas legislature passed a law allowing school districts to deny enrollment to children without out legal paperwork proving U.S. citizenship. In addition to denying these undocumented students access to free public schools, school districts in Texas were permitted to charge students tuition for enrollment. Some districts were cited for charging nearly $1,000 for enrollment. The attorneys on behalf of “certain school-age children of Mexican origin in Smith County, who could not establish they had been legally admitted into the United States’ filed a class action suit in 1977” (Plyler v. Doe, 1982).

I enjoyed the chapter, Mohammed Meets Madonna from the book The Middle of Everywhere and I thought the author’s journals of the students were interesting. I like that Mary Pipher wrote a little about all the students that were in the English Language Learner class. I thought this gave the audience a good idea of the variety of backgrounds and attitudes that the students had. For example, there are students who are in gangs, like Khoi and Cahn, and then there are students who are tenderhearted, like Velida and Tharaya. Some of the students in the ELL class wanted to learn and had dreams of going to college, while others just wanted to get out of school. I found this difference between these students interesting because I know that when I become a teacher, I will also have a wide variety of students. These journals made me realize some of the challenges I will have to overcome as a future teacher.

California's Proposition 13 had a big impact on American government and public policy because it put to vote the reduction of property taxes. This Proposition had a great impact as it swept the county and made headlines in newspapers around the world. People used this initiative process to gain a greater control over their lives. The California taxpayers stood up and said no more to excessive taxes because they were tired of out of control property taxes and losing their homes because they could not pay property taxes while the government did nothing to help them. The film does a great job of portraying the complexity of the situation by comparing two teachers that work at Hoover, Third-grade teacher Dianne Lee and First-grade teacher Arcelia Hernandez whose approach towards ELL students differs tremendously. Dianne Lee takes the English only approach with her students, hoping they will learn the language through immersion. Dianne is approaching her students in a way that is forcing them to give up their culture, even quoted saying “to become American, you have to be willing to give something up” pointing to her grandparents who immigrated from Russia and strove to Americanize themselves and their family. What Dianne most likely did not realize that more dropouts come from students who are placed in English only instruction where their primary language is suppressed (Freeman, p. 159). While showcasing another approach is Arcelia Hernandez who uses Latino culture and language that she shares with her students in order to help them learn both Spanish and English.

The Supreme Courts court's 7–2 decision held the First Amendment which applied to public schools. The administrators would have to establish "constitutionally valid reasons for any specific regulation of speech in the classroom". The court said you can't expect students or teachers to "shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate". They felt that school district's actions evidently stemmed from a fear of possible disruption rather than any actual interference. The court ruled that the actions of the students did not disrupt school and their activity was "constitutionally protected symbolic speech".

In 1947, the Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 in favor of the defendant in a case named Everson v Board of Education. In this case, the Majority opinion laid out an interpretation of the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment of the Constitution for the first time in regards to how it should be applied. As such, it would set the precedence for the way that the Supreme Court would look at the First Amendment even until today. Although in this particular instance, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of religion and schools, this new definition of the First Amendment would go on to be used against religion in the American public school system for years to come until it would be almost entirely eradicated from public schools today. I am really enjoying the class, and I have learned so much from all your classes. The topic I chose for my written report is intervention for undocumented immigrants, specifically the dreamers as they are called. The children who have gone to school in the United States all their lives, and the struggles they have when they reach college age, as they want to deport them. I find this topic an injustice and inhumane. This specific population must have all kinds of emotions and anxiety having to worry about making their grades, exceling in school, and ultimately having to worry about being deported just when they have decided what they want to do with their lives and future career.
