1. Describe strategies you gained from the course for improving outcomes of care and patient safety in the setting in which you are engaged in. Provide examples and rationale.
I’ve not only gained an abundance of knowledge from this course, but I also took a lot away from my classmates. Seeing how they would handle situations and what they have experienced during their clinical time was really interesting to me. I have gained so many strategies from this course for improving outcomes of care and patient safety. A few of those strategies are always promoting communication, learning from mistakes, and that quality can always be improved.
Communication is key in health care and this course really reiterated this. Promoting communication will
In addition residents of new medical programs are being trained to be educated of maintaining quality care and implementing systems to reduce errors and improve quality of care ( Shojania & Levinson, 2009). As stated by the authors, faculty must be educated to provide the education essential to the needs to improve quality care and implement QI standards of teaching to ensure the highest standard of care. Finally, the patient must be held accountable to ensure they are as proactive as possible to receive the most efficient care possible, as well as cost effective care.
Within a health care setting communication is a necessity. This communication not only includes the need for professional communication but also the way in which information is shared to the patient and to other healthcare workers. Another important aspect of health care worker such as a nurse is the effectiveness off a handover. Within the video, Effective Communication in nursing these three aspects of communication (Professional communication, provision of information and handover) were seen and will be analysed further, within this essay. These will be analysed through the three aspects, the care of the patient, the image of the individual nurse and the health outcomes of the patient. All of these three aspects of communication are vitally important to the overall patient needs.
The practice of nursing utilizes constant communication between nurses, patients, physicians, coworkers, and various other members of the healthcare team. It is clear that effective communication is vital in the provision of safe and effective nursing care. A long history of miscommunication-related medical errors has spurred research aimed toward improving communication and lessening consequent error. Research has identified various forms of communication structure acronyms that when used correctly, allows for a more organized and precise shift report. These acronyms include SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation, and SHARE (Standardize, Hardwire, Allow opportunities to ask questions, Reinforce, and Educate). In addition, studies have identified a more effective shift report location that enhances nurse-to-nurse as well as nurse-to-patient communication. Bedside reporting was explored and determined to be a very effective form of nursing report that increases overall patient safety and satisfaction. Communication improvement is a continuous focus within the healthcare arena and is vital in the provision of safe patient care.
Communication plays a very crucial role in the overall development of important aspects of healthcare environment. The communication strategy that is adopted focuses on creating a significant environment where the quality of healthcare can be improved. Program planning processes within healthcare environment are crucial in the sense that there is need to ensure that they are developed focusing on key factors, which are upheld by a healthcare organization. The communication aspect of program planning needs to be effectively considered to ensure that there is a positive development of processes, which are considered (Coombs, 2014). Communication is the existing link between individuals within a given environment, and thus it is important to understand the program planning process incorporates some stakeholders in the healthcare industry where they can have a significant focus on the issues, which are being addressed. There are significant functions of communication in strategic program planning in a healthcare organization.
Hi, Gosia! I enjoyed reading your self-assessment and goal progress reflection. I could appreciate your experiences in this course as they were similar to mine in the effort to apply learning to project planning, team building, meetings, implementation, planning and execution. Although I used the OCHE’s Healthcare Executive 2016 Competencies Assessment Tool, the assessment was similar to the ACHE’s and I was pleased to see the growth from novice to expert. Great
Professional and effective communication is a vital ingredient to safe and high quality nursing practice. Proper communication with other co-workers, physicians, ancillary staff, patients, and their families is a required skill necessary for all practicing, professional healthcare professionals. Communicating with others has become second nature to us, but are we communicating properly with one another on a day to day basis? The purpose of this paper is to define healthcare communication, identify the relevancy of effective personal healthcare communication with
The bottom line is communicating effectively and efficiently in health care impacts is an important but difficult and complex task. However, since every audience differs in goals, characteristics, and nature, that is what is most important is implementing effective communication. The nurse implement and include frequent two-way communication, repeated and on-going evaluation of how well the audience understands the messages, and consideration of how to improve the
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Next Accreditation System (NAS) shifted the focus of resident training from educational processes to educational outcomes; measurable knowledge, skills, attitudes, that a resident or fellow should develop as a result of graduate medical education. The Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) program, a component of the NAS, was designed to provide feedback to teaching hospitals and medical centers about how well they are engaging residents in patient safety and healthcare
This course really clarified what I observed during my observerships at CHA, HDF, and AUBMC emergency rooms. I was encouraged to take this course by one of the residents at AUBMC and found it to be extremely resourceful. The cases/procedures I encountered during my shadowing hours at the emergency departments were good illustrations of the course. This allowed me to reflect back to the clinical cases and analyze them again in the context of the new knowledge and skills I have
I have decided to be more proactive in redefining my experience of the medical program. Though my philosophies have not quite changed, my strategies have. It was during my placements last year that I realised that although still in my pre-clinical years, all the information I am learning is preparing me for the day when it will just be me and my patient. It was great experience being able to practice my clinical skills and see my knowledge come into practice. Seeing how what we learn is used in a clinical setting brings our modules into a bigger perspective. It is much easier to learn
This class and what the material is centered around is an essential key to my future career and will be skills that I will use for the rest of my life. My future career goal is to be a nurse anesthetist so that I can pursue my passion for medical science and to fufill my life long desire of helping others especially in their times of need. This skills of being able to speak in public to those that I do not know very well will be something that I will experience everyday. Along with being able to speak to my future patients, being able to showcase my knowledge and advice confidently will be essential to comforting and guiding those who turn to me for advice.
My four weeks of clinical placement had thought me lots of things that can help me to become a better nurse in the future. I give my outmost respect and thanks to my clinical preceptors to the learning and knowledge they have imparted. I have learned a lot from clinical placement because 2B ward is a surgical unit I came to understand the complexity of wound care. Every wound should be assessed according to its type and severity because every type of wound has its appropriate dressing. Aside from learning clinical procedure such as wound dressing, drug administration (within scope of practice), naso-gastric feeding and etc, I came to learn the importance of teamwork it makes the job easier and allows good communication within staff members of the ward. I am looking forward for my upcoming clinical placement in 3rd year to gain more knowledge in and experience to develop my nursing skills and become a competent nurse in the future.
I am the type of student that welcomes rigor, so that's why AP courses are my favorite. Given that, I am extremely excited to experience an enlightening and rewarding course that deepens my love and appreciation for healthcare. On that note, I also understand that academic skills are only half of what it takes to be in medicine; you also need people skills. I’m hoping to improve my social skills by working with students with similar interests, build my communication confidence, and learn about and practice building consensus. Not only would this opportunity provide immediate application and enhance my potential in future careers, these skills will help me act as a visionary to help in communicating a more powerful future to others.
What I can take from this class is how to be confident. As long as you know your topics, you are able to go in front and present what you have learned. During the 8 weeks being in Theory class, I learned about different types of anemia, how to take of patient when experience Epistaxis, what types of precautions and assessment done during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative. I also learned different stages of wound healing, how to identify the stages, and how to clean the wound to prevent infection. I have learned different types of fractures and how to cast and different types if castings.
Recommendations. The author would recommend this course for every doctoral student. Although there was a great deal of work required for this course, the subject is very important in today’s health care industry. Disease prevention is the key. The instructor was very interactive in the course and provided adequate feedback to the students. The instructor was supportive and encouraged students along the way. One recommendation for the course would be a revision of the syllabus. The syllabus instructions were repetitive and sometimes even confusing. On some assignments, there were conflicting due dates. There was a significant amount of highlighting in different colors, which was distracting. The author preferred to highlight the parts she needed and therefore printed the syllabus in black and white and used the colors appropriate for her needs.
