I am a young black woman who is trying to pave the way to success through furthering my education. Everything I bring to the table adds to the spectrum of diversity. Growing up I always felt different. The elementary school I attended , I always could recognize where I differed from everybody else. My hair, my skin tone, my gap (before the braces), and especially height. It wasn’t easy but the older I became, I learned to embrace every aspect of me. Diversity to me is what you bring to the table (age, gender, sexual orientation, race, skills, etc.) that differs from everyone else. It’s what makes you stand out among the population. After carefully reviewing the different topics for this essay, I conclude that topic four is the best choice. In this short essay, I will discuss the following: what are my academic interests, why diversity is important to me, and what do I bring to the diversity of a college atmosphere. While there are quite a few opportunities that I want to pursue, I will only mention the interests that will best benefit me in my life at this current time. I felt challenged to be myself feeling like I had to be quiet and not speak my mind in the fear of people not agreeing on my ideas. After I finally was getting used to my classes and the community I began to open up to people around me. I can the conclusion that these people that I thought were so different from me actually have a lot of things in common. When getting to know the classmates around me, it make it easier to cope with the differences I had, and realize I was not the only one who felt different. I began to actually became good friends students that were totally different from me and just needed to give them a chance.
For every major holiday, my aunt comes from Columbus, Georgia stays for a week or two and the rest of the family gathers at my grandmother’s house. One family tradition we have done since 2002 is that whoever bakes the best pie between my aunts gets money from my grandmother. The rest of the family are taste testers and we vote on whose pie taste the best. That is one tradition I look forward to every year because I know that both will be incredibly delicious. On my mother’s side of the family, we have a Thanksgiving tradition we came up with a few years ago where we have a dance battle and the losing side’s video has to be posted on social media for everyone to see. I have been fortunate to have been on the winning side every time, but this year might be a little different because my cousin is coming from California and he is an amazing dancer.

In order to be inclusive on campus, and gain the most from your time at this University, you must become comfortable to engage with others who are unlike yourself and to extend your network. Through this video I learned what kind of diversity a person may provide to their community on multiple different levels, and how we create biases against others based on these traits which we observe.
