No.2/June 2007 What is the pressing need to have project management in IT projects? Two out of the three IT projects fail to make the final cut. [1] This article not only elucidates the need for an appropriate project management team but also puts forth what can go wrong if the organization is oblivious to the project management processes. About 88% of the classic mistakes are categorized as either people or process mistakes. Some common mistakes being poor estimation and scheduling, ineffective stakeholder management, and insufficient risk management. [2] The article also highlights the meta-retrospective of 99 IT projects and their analysis for project management making it clear how such aggregation of retrospective findings point out most common mistakes and help adopt best practices for effective project management. In the first part the article lists out infamous failures that has gained top of the line mention for the sheer magnitude of the projects and the money involved. In this week’s discussion board, we learned about several project management tools and how they are used to facilitate the successful implementation of IT related projects. Additionally, we learned what happens when IT projects fall behind schedule, the reasons for the delays and if these reasons will hinder complex software implementations in the future.

A project is a temporary endeavour that creates a unique result. Time, budget, resources, and performance specifications, to meet requirements made by stakeholders, limit a project (Project Management Institute, 2013, pg.3). Project management is the application of tools, techniques, and knowledge to help achieve the three main constraints of scope, cost and time (Project Management Institute, 2013, pg.5). This applies managerial process and gives project managers the opportunity to make a project successful. However, there are still numbers of project failures both big and small projects. This failure does not only affect finances but also demoralizes employees who have laboured diligently to complete the work. The case of Wembley Stadium project failure will be analyzed in this paper to illustrate project management difficulties a project can encounter if appropriate tools and techniques are not successfully developed, implemented, and evaluated within the project management processes. The major problems concerning the Wembley Stadium project were scope, time, cost, quality, and stakeholder issues (Carter, 2002). However, this paper would be focusing on scope, time and cost issues. The format of this paper will include the project analysis, which will provide brief description of the Wembley stadium project, and main reasons why the project failed. In “Response of IT Project Management: Infamous Failures, Classic Mistakes, and Best Practices”, R.Ryan Nelson (2007) argued that the best way to avoid classical mistakes and finally stay away from infamous failure is to use best practices proactively and knowledgeably. He also suggested that project managers focus on people and process, institute their own best practices, and improve best practices by identifying the problems most occurs in specific project and using the matrix.
