“Professionalism is not sportsmanship. If you don't succeed, you won't be in your profession for long. In our society, it's not about good or bad. It's about who's on top”. This is a very inspirational quote from Chili Davis, who is a hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs. What he said is important because in todays society if you are not on top in comparison to your peers you will go nowhere in your profession. Military and professional bearing have a huge impact on how someone is viewed in society, having a professional appearance, displaying proper customs and courtesies, and having the proper tack will have you standing out above your peers. Every branch of the military have their own guidelines for proper customs and courtesies. Showing people the proper respect demonstrates professionalism, respect, and discipline. This is as easy as addressing someone with the proper title such as Sir, Ma’am, Sgt, etc. Customs and courtesies aren’t just to show respect but it helps to instill pride in service, build esprit de corps, and build cohesive teams. In the military there is doctrine that give guidelines, for the Army this is outlined in AR 600-25 “General Salutes, Honors, and Visits of courtesy”. However this is not always the case in the civilian environment. Most companies do not set specific guidelines for how someone is to be addressed or shown respect. Lastly, we have tact. Tact by definition means “a keen sense of what to do or say in order to maintain good relations with others or avoid offense”. This means knowing when, who, and what to say to someone in certain situations. If you’re in an operational environment it probably isn’t a good Idea to ask your leadership questions about going to college, when the question could be asked at a better place and time. This can also be said for jokes, knowing who you are around, what you’re currently doing, and knowing if the joke could be offensive to
