This paper proposes a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) curriculum with emphasis on essential human and capital resources, curriculum design, and theoretical underpinnings. To ensure congruency with relevant professional nursing standards, the proposal incorporates Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE, 2013) accreditation standards and the Georgia (GA) Registered Nurse (RN) Professional Nurse Practice Act (2013). The main campus is 45 minutes northwest of Atlanta, GA, with a campus in northern Fulton County and programs in Cartersville, GA. The student population includes traditional, non-traditional, residents, and commuters. With a commitment to personalized attention, student/faculty ratio is 12:1, with an average class size of 13 students (RU, 2015). Fall 2015 enrollment was 1,387 students; 92% undergraduate, 11% online, 90% full-time; 51% male (RU, 2015). There are currently no nursing programs in the area. RU diverse student population includes students with distinctive learning needs (RU, 2015). Students requiring accommodations will follow RU policy. The author’s familiarity as a resident of the community and as a parent of RU alumnus will help ensure the SON mission, goals, and expected outcomes will be congruent with RU. The SON’s philosophy will be learning should be fun, interesting, engaging, interactive, and challenging. Because faculty, students, and patients whole and complex beings, the SON will incorporate the art and science of nursing to prepare students to provide ethical, holistic, and culturally competent care. Proceeding each offering of courses, evaluation occurs and is shared with faculty course members and the Director of the School of Nursing. The evaluation is utilized to improve the teaching and learning strategies to enhance achievement of learning outcomes for subsequent semesters. The curriculum committee’s responsibility is to review the nursing courses for rigor, currency, and integrity and present new recommendations to faculty based on this review. Faculty will consider current changes by a majority vote.
Often, with many degree core coursework, there is an exorbitant amount of irrelevant material that is required to meet the degree standard. This core coursework is very seldom relevant to the degree focus itself. Educators periodically review the stated requirements and make changes necessary to not only meet the base education requirement but meet the focused degree standards. Nurse leaders are also calling for such a review – one that will provide curricular direction that will help nursing education adapt to the changing needs of Canadians and the changing healthcare system. There are three routes to entry level nursing, and two of these routes are at a collegiate level. Both of these collegiate level programs provide enough information for the graduate to take and pass the NCLEX-RN exam. However, there are critical differences between both programs that researchers have discovered eventually affect nursing care and outcomes of patients.
In today’s healthcare system, nursing is a challenging field as a result of rapid technological advances and changes in healthcare policies. As a dedicated nursing professional, with a great passion for learning, I strive to stay on top of these changes. My practicum setting will be an associate degree nursing program, Joliet Junior College (JJC), one of the oldest community colleges in Illinois. The mission of the school is focused on offering students an affordable, accessible valued education for a lifelong profession in nursing, and to serve the community (Joliet Junior College [JJC], n. d.). Accordingly, the school’s philosophy is based on preparing students to be exceptional providers in the growing healthcare system, providing safe and high quality care (JJC, n. d.). The foundation of the JJC nursing program is based on four major principles: client, environment, health and nursing (JJC, n.d), while their conceptual framework is grounded in the fundamental structure of three major theories which forms the basis of the concepts, skills, and principles of the nursing practice (JJC, n. d.). The three major theories are: Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Levels of Prevention and the Nursing Process (JJC, n.d.). As I prepare for my first classes in nursing school, I recognize my unique position to examine the values that I will bring into my nursing career. Without any experience, my values remain relatively unshaped regarding healthcare. In contrast, the values of nurses who have already accumulated a variety of experiences tend to be more nuanced and informed. For this exercise, I met with one of these experienced nurses—CC, a cardiac-catheterization laboratory nurse who just welcomed her third child. Together, CC and I explored the differences in our upbringings, how we were each sucked into nursing, and how our values have changed throughout different life experiences. Above all, I intended to delve into the story of her fifteen-year career in order to discover how an experienced nurse philosophizes patient care.
I define my philosophy of nursing within the three nursing domains of person, health, and environment. My goal is to communicate the importance of nursing as a knowledge-based career, depending not only on the nurse fulfilling her role but also on the patient’s compliance. With an ever-increasing body of knowledge in the field of nursing, more education is being required to enter the field of nursing. Many healthcare institutions are raising the educational requirements in order to become employed or maintain employment in their facilities. Healthcare organizations are transitioning to hiring registered nurses (RN) who have a higher level of education, such as, a graduate from a Baccalaureate Degree Nursing (BSN) program. The goal of these institutions is to have nurses with a broader array of skills that can meet the growing demands of our patient population. BSN prepared nurses are recognized for their well-rounded skills in critical thinking, management, case management and health promotion versus Associate Degree nurses (ADN)/Diploma nurses that focus on direct patient care.
Time spent at my mother’s bedside in the intensive care unit changed my perception of the nursing profession. I realized what unique value was integrated in comprehensive nursing care, which was built on excellence, compassion, and respect. I knew right then and there that nursing was a professional path which I would like to take. Changing my college major to nursing was not a difficult decision – I wanted to repay for all that courteous care my family received in the most vulnerable time of our lives.
A nursing philosophy is the thoughts and beliefs about the job of a nurse based on one’s values. My values that have formed over the years have influenced me to purse a forever career as a nurse. I grew up in a small town Smithfield, Pennsylvania with my parents and younger brother. My community consisted of close relationships between the residents. Every one helped and cared for one another when needed. The practices of my community guided me to want to become a nurse. I want to continue to care for my community and give back to them by treating their illnesses and providing them with better health care. I am particularly interested in caring for pediatric patients. My goal is to try to provide every infant a chance to live their beautiful life created for them by God. While doing this, the primary focus of being a nurse will be to accommodate my patients and allow them to become a healthy person again.
I am a recent baccalaureate graduate of Charleston Southern University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in May of 2015. On June 20, 2015, I received my NCLEX-RN results and became a registered nurse in the state of South Carolina. After considering my options for a graduate program, I happily accepted my offer from Case Western Reserve University and moved to Cleveland to pursue my graduate studies. Over the course of my undergraduate career, theories were included in the curriculum but not in depth. It is for this reason that I am excited to partake in this course – to learn the foundational and applicable theories of the nursing profession.
