It was David Hume that brought forth the problem of induction. Due to his profound critique, philosophers have argued the subject of induction for centuries. Considering the fact that our experiences of the world cannot confirm or disprove general or universal claims, but only particular facts. According to philosophers, reasoning is broadly categorized into three parts: deductive, inductive, and adductive reasoning. Lastly, there is adductive reasoning. The approach normally starts with an incomplete set of observations and builds towards the likeliest possible explanation. This essay looks to discuss Wittgenstein’s response to Russell’s worries about inductive reasoning. According to Russell, inductive beliefs cannot be justified, as to justify them we need to know that the past is indicative of the future, which we cannot know since the future has not occurred yet. Thus, he holds that we cannot justify inductive beliefs. First the essay discusses how we ordinarily claim that induction to be unjustified. Conclusions drawn from this are then used by Wittgenstein to alleviate Russell’s problem. The essay then finds that Russell’s problem comes from him confusing the definitions of knowledge and justified beliefs. Finally, the paper looks to see if Wittgenstein’s response was successful and concludes that it is.

An example would be this ball from this sac is black. That ball from the sac is black. A third ball from the bag is black. Therefore, all the balls in the sac are black. This justification is we assume that something will continue to happen because it has happened the same way before. Hume believes that this type of assumption is circular and lacks justification in reason.

In this paper I discuss the views for and against the scientific method, induction and induction as a scientific method. The scientific method has been proven to be successful countless times, but it has its drawbacks as well, if observations do not follow the predictable laws it cannot be explain by the method. Although inductive reasoning is– as we shall see - not logically continuous, it is nevertheless a seemingly parsimonious avenue for the formation of theories and conceptions about the world around us. The sun has risen and fallen every day up until this point in time and while this may not logically prove that it will do the same tomorrow, the popular belief is that this repetition gives us a firm ontological grounding for expecting it to do so. This does not seem unreasonable, at least in one sense of the word; indeed, if you happened to meet an individual who claimed to possess an agnostic belief about whether or not the sun is likely to reappear tomorrow, then you would most likely consider them to be a very odd person. So inductive inferences are all around us, they are the functional basis of our understanding of the world. For the sake of this paper, then, it is important to understand what we mean when we talk about an inductive inference.

Inductive inferences are used throughout daily life, where we use past events to make predictions of future ones – moving from specific direct knowledge to general indirect knowledge. Inductive inferences are where the premises of an argument support or give good reason to accept the conclusion – but are not logically necessary like deductive inferences (where the negation results in contradiction). In my opinion, induction cannot be justified as it rests on several assumptions. Firstly, that an entire class of objects/events are the same and these will always act in a particular manner; and secondly, that the future will always resemble the past. This begs the question with it’s circular reasoning – because my use of induction has worked in the past it will work in the future. The foundation for matters of fact are based on Cause and Effect where inferences are uncertain if nothing holds them together thus every effect is a distinct event from its cause (THN, 180). He then divides all reasoning into two categories: demonstrative reasoning (deductive) or that concerning relations of ideas, and moral reasoning that concerning matter of fact and existence. All arguments concerning existence are based on cause and effect where our knowledge of that relation is derived entirely from experience. People instinctively use induction as a way of reasoning. We use evidence from events that happen to us every do to make sense of things that we haven’t experienced or observed. Hume tells us that we must first decide whether the evidence we took from our experiences is any good. If the evidence we gathered gives us reason to believe things we haven’t seen or experienced then are we able to justify these claims? To further explain Hume’s point, we can use the example of having a container full of black balls you presume to be candy. After sampling a few of the balls and deciding that they taste like licorice, you gather that all the items must also taste like licorice. All of the balls you have observed up to this point have tasted like licorice. Inductive reasoning would lead us to believe that since a few of the balls tasted like licorice every other ball must also be licorice. In the play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell she believes the theme is that men underestimate how smart women are. To begin, the sheriff and county attorney are looking around the house when the sheriff says “Nothing here but kitchen things”. This is an example of situational irony because the sheriff expects that there is nothing there but later in the story the opposite happens and the two women find very important evidence that could solve the murder case. This supports the theme by showing that the women were smart enough to figure out what those items meant but the men didn’t think anything of them. Secondly, Mrs. Peters was told by the attorney to keep an eye out for anything that might help them.

While induction is only one of the five parts of the inductivist account of science, it is one of the most important steps. Induction is the process by which scientists make a leap of thought from observation to theory, and if induction has flaws, then the new theory must unquestionably contain flaws. Regardless of these errors, a scientist, according to an inductivist philosopher, will still accept a particular scientific theory if it can be validly induced from factual observation and experiment.
