Communism is a “Political theory advocating class war and leading to a society which all property is publicly owned and each person works and paid according to their abilities” After world war 2 communism took over Czechoslovakia and people flocked to join the party. Not everyone was convinced that the party was what the country needed for them to gain peace. The party had lots of propaganda and were in control of peoples live therefore convincing people to join the party even if reluctant. In Under a Cruel Star, Kovaly recounts her time after the war and joining the communist party and then being shunned when her husband was convicted of a crime. She talks about how people put blind faith in a party that didn't have much scientific evidence to back up their claims. Kovaly said the most people went to the communist party because when coming back from the concentration camp they wanted to be in control of property again and they stayed because they felt helpless without the party providing services. They went from one type of totalitarian government to another kind of government that controlled everything they did. People of the time didn't realize that communism didn't benefit people who weren't in an elite class.
Communism is system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people. In some countries, the communist government functioned well while in other countries, the government slowly collapsed on itself. Criticism rose from the masses of the population of each country and caused the people to question if communism was the most favorable system of government. In the late 1950s, Eastern European states’ criticism over communism was harsh and condemnatory as the communists appeared to be doing nothing for the well-being of the countries; overtime, criticism shifted to a more melancholy tone, presenting a comfortable but non beneficial view of communism in the 1980s. Negative views spread throughout the European states and eventually developed on their own.
Communism provides to each individual citizen according to their needs. The government leader(s) makes all decisions concerning economic, social, and political issues without any input from the citizens.
This created a society in which everyone felt deprived and longed for something different. Drakulić phrases it as “longing for the indefinite other” (A Doll that Grew Old, 59). People began forming groups where everyone could express their viewpoints. Communism fell because people began to eradicate censorship and deprivation. There were illegal exchanges and acquisition of luxury items in large quantities. Engaging in these activities made people feel like they had choices. They differentiated themselves with radical thoughts and ideas. In an effort to make everyone equal, communism rejected people’s identities. It eventually fell because citizens looked for ways to oppose the party that took away their
Communism is a system of social organisation which formerly consumed almost a third of countries in the entire world, having originated in Russia. The first official communist state was founded during the Russian revolutions in 1917, due to the inaugural communist political party ‘Bolsheviks’ gaining primal power. Afterwards, the influence of communism spread to other countries with the likes of Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and East Germany to name a few. These countries that were governed on communist principles were known as the ‘Eastern Bloc’. Even countries in Asia were persuaded into the theoretically human equality system such as China, Laos and Vietnam. Communism was gathering strength to strength every year in the mid 20th century, but eventually its impact was wiped off in the late 20th century when the Berlin War was knocked down in 1989, ending the barrier between the Eastern and Western blocs. Communism arguably was the most influential social experiment in history, but also the most flawed and its failure to change the world permanently will always remain significant in history.
Communism is still considered a hard topic to publicly address because for a large majority of Americans, you were taught to fear and hate anything that was associated with the “Red Scare”. From the beginning, Communism has had an issue being adapted widespread because of people’s refusal to forfeit their rights to attain certainty and security. Whereas Democracy and Capitalism have thrived because people want more, they want the opportunity to make something of themselves even if that means they may fail entirely. These points exemplify what Communism is, where it is, how it works, and why there is a better way to govern a country.
Marx argued that due to capitalism’s competitive nature, it would eventually die out and be replaced with a new form of government, communism. It is to Marx’s beliefs that change cannot simply occur through reforms or changes in government, rather a revolution in which the proletariat overthrow the bourgeois is necessary. Marx promoted the revolution, moving history towards its natural conclusion, through his ten proposals for a communist society. Among them include: a heavy progressive income tax, an exclusive monopoly of the banks under the state, transferring ownership of the modes of production to the state, a more equal distribution of the population over the country, and most importantly, the abolition of private property. Marx stated,” the theory of communists may be summed up in the single sentence: abolition of private property.” Marx acknowledged that this notion was radical and asserted that it is due in part to the liberal misconception that landowning is the fundamentals

Patrick O’Neil defines communism in his book Essentials of Comparative Politics Fifth Edition, as “an ideology that seeks to create human equality by eliminating private property and market forces.” O’Neil continues by explaining Karl Marx and his theory on how communism would spread and what it would look like once it formed. Marx’s focus was the fall of capitalism and the rise of the working class (Proletariat). In this society, the state would wither away and a true form of communism would form. This form would have no class struggle or individual profit, but rather an economy focused on equality and the greater good. These goal’s have helped communism spread throughout the world as it has attracted several nations toward the notion of creating a communist state.
