Robert W. Krepps' short story "Pride of Seven" elucidate how there's different types of courage whether it's in a barbarian initiation or a valiant man; courage will acknowledge courage. The story begins when the Dutch narrator talks about living with the Masai family in South Africa, who believes that a boy needs to go through ceremonies such as killing a lion, and befriends a boy out of pity named En-gerr or The Sheep who has not killed a lion for he simply doesn't feel like it. The narrator invites En-gerr to see the 7 lions after mentioning him, but En-get finds his perfect lion to kill, a tawny beast named El Asfar, the Dutchman's favorite. After telling the tribe about his find The Sheep and tribe assemble for the hunt until En-gerr does the extraordinary by walking calmly until no more than 15 feet separated him for El Asfar as he casts his weapons down and holds grass in his right hand as a truce he makes peace with the lion and turns his back vulnerably walking away. …show more content…
A great example of how courage shall acknowledges courage is when The Sheep finally decides to tell the tribe of his changing mind to kill the lion. The narrator says "Now that En-Gerr had made up his mind, he was the hero of the hour...All the young Warriors were eager to go with him, act as the beaters. The elders were giving him last-minute advice, and the women were throwing grass and spitting at him to brinluck. (5)" Before En-gerr's new decision the tribe saw him barely better than a woman and the warriors and girls had scorned him, making fun of him for putting off his first kill. The tribe didn't think he had courage and didn't see him as a man until The Sheep changed his mind and then they were approving of him and went the extra mile to make sure they were there to help. Another example of this is when En-gerr walks toward El Asfar to make
Courage is important because if you’re not courageous you will not explore new things, get new experiences. An example of courage happens in the first couple of pages when Jasper and Charlie go out to explore late at night into the forest. If they haven’t gone out there they would’ve never found the body
One good example of courage is in Homer's epic poem, “The Odyssey,” when Odysseus enters the Cyclops’ cave. In the epic poem Odysseus and his men enter the Cyclops cave and the text states “We climbed, then, briskly to the cave. But Cyclops had gone afield..." (Homer 157-158). This example demonstrates that Odysseus enters a Cyclops cave and is not fearful. Odysseus enters the cave because he sees treasure and wants to get it for him and his crew. Odysseus chooses to enter the cave even though he knew the cave was the Cyclops home and this demonstrates courage, and this is why the trait should be encouraged. Another good example of courage that sticks out is Newton Knight, who chooses to help slaves even though he lives in the south during the Civil War. In the Biography.com Editors’s article, “Newton Knight,” Knight chooses to stop fighting for the Confederate Army and goes back to his hometown to help slaves, as the text states “They saw themselves as defending the residents of Jones County from the Confederacy” (Biography.com Editors 1). Therefore, this example demonstrates that Knight chooses to fight against the Confederate Army even though he lives in Mississippi. It takes a lot of courage to go up against the Confederate Army even though he lived in the south and almost everyone was against him. It should
In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Peter shows courage by facing a wolf, and in the Cree legend the badger family shows courage by helping the bear. In The Barren Grounds, Morgan and Eli don’t have to stay to save Ask from the never-ending White Time, but they do, and Ochek decides to climb as high as he can with an arrow wound in his shoulder to release the summer birds so that Ask can finally thrive. The Badger family didn’t have to help the bear because he was dying of hunger, but they did anyway so that he could survive. Peter from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, shows courage by fighting off a wolf to save his sister. In all these stories the characters always had a choice not to show courage and if they had chosen that, all the stories would have had very different endings.
The value of courage in the face of adversity is shown in Ender’s Game and To Kill a Mockingbird. The definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus shows courage when he is against the mob who is trying to hang Tom Robinson. “A flash of pain fear was going out of his eyes… He put the newspaper down very carefully adjusting its creases with lingering fingers. They were trembling a little.” (Harper Lee pg 152) In this quote Atticus realized that the mob was very dangerous, but he had to protect Tom Robinson. This is where Scout realized how much courage her father had. She saw that he did not back down and looked up to him for that. The author wants to tell the reader to have courage and to stand up for
Courage When someone goes through something really tough it can be really hard to be courageous again, but if they want to feel stronger, little acts of courage go a long way. The book Speak is by Laurie Halse Anderson and focuses on a girl that went through something horrible. She had to be courageous and finally stood up for herself. Everyone in the school hated her and gave her looks, but she didn’t give up, even though it got very hard. Courage is needed for different reasons and different people, sometimes it can be talking to someone, going somewhere, or standing up for yourself.
Courage is defined in this book as doing what is right. Even if it means you are on the
One particular instance where courage is considered is Kiowa’s death. Jimmy Cross blames himself for Kiowa’s death because he thinks he was not courageous enough to pull Kiowa out of the field they were in. O’Brien later gives the reader an inside look at Jimmy Cross’s thoughts, and the metaphor he created to compare the situation to: “A lost ball, he thought. Tired players searching through the rough, sweeping back and forth in long systematic patterns”(167). Death becomes easier to cope with for the soldiers when it is compared to something familiar and peaceful, like golf. Jimmy Cross was comparing his dead friend to a lost golf ball - small in comparison to the rest of the course(or the war) yet important enough to spend time looking
This courage, or rather the opposite, is demonstrated in Tim O’Brien’s novel The Things They Carried, in particular the chapter entitled “On the Rainy River”. In the summer of 1968, O’Brien was drafted to perform military service in the Vietnam War. He, like many others, thought that this conflict was very unjust and he didn’t really understand what the United States was trying to accomplish. Unfortunately for O’Brien, he felt that if he did not go and perform the service like he intended that not only his family, but also his entire hometown would look at him as if he were a coward. In response, he states “I was a coward. I went to war.” (61). In the traditional sense, the
In the short story, “The Pride of Seven,” by Robert W. Krepps illustrates that the path that society takes is not always the right path for you . The whole story takes place in South Africa with a group of people called, the Masai. They were nomadic people who lived off of the land. Robert came to them when writing a book and found a friend in the process, his name was En-gerr. He was far into his life and not yet killed a lion and in his culture the men had to kill a lion to be considered a man, but En-gerr refused to do this ritual.
Courage is the ability to do something in the face of pain, grief or fear. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus serves as an example of true courage to the town when he shoots the sick dog Tim Johnson, defends Tom Robinson in his legal troubles and allows Mr. Ewell spit in his face.
Courage can be defined in many ways, but I feel it's when you're scared or know the outcome can be bad but you don't back down. I really enjoyed how To Kill A Mockingbird showed personal courage in the face of injustice. It showed this throughout multiple characters in the novel. My favorites were Atticus, Boo, and Dill.
In the short story “Pride of seven” Robert W. Krepps’ portrays a true test of individuality vs conformity in which in this case individuality wins. As the young african warrior En-ger is left with the decision of killing the lion, if he chose to kill the lion the first worry would be over; whereas if he didn’t kill a lion, that would finish the second and he would let down his tribe, he sets out to find and kill the leader of the pride of 7 which the narrator named El Asfar, a tawny lion. As they search for the pride of seven the younger lion black mane gives away the pack by calling out to an ostrich being the leader El Asfar gets in a fight with black mane and teaches him a lesson the hard way. Still on the hunt en gerr over steps and proves himself worthy doing a courageous act, he makes peace and creates a truce with the lion by plucking a handful of grass, a sacred symbol of his race, and holding it in his right hand as the Masai do when making a truce, he walked toward the yellow lion, approached the animal until no more than fifteen feet separated En-ger raised his hand and waved the grassland said “It is peace, chieftain,” En-gerr said in a clear, carrying voice.
(Homer 12.208-213). This reveals the depth of their wounds and instigates the audience because they’re able to find some strong words of encouragement to contend with their own problems. Correspondingly, the novel To Kill a Mockingbird also has its own example of courage. In the text it says, “I wanted you to see what real courage is… It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin
Courage or the act of being courageous is something that can depict if a person is being weak. This act ties into the classic tale when identifying the strength it took Sundiata to walk. Sundiata was at an age where other young boys were gathering objects for their mothers and he simply could not, due to the fact that he was unable to walk. However, “In a great effort he straightened up and was on his feet at one go, but the great bar of iron was twisted and had taken the form of a bow.” (Page 21) A boy who once couldn't walk was now walking. He who once had to depend on his mother can now be the one his mother depends on. Thus, “ When Sogolon saw her son standing she stood dumb for a moment, then suddenly she sang these words of thanks to god who had given her son the use of his legs”. (Page 21) Sogolon was so discouraged to the point where the sight of her son’s slow development became an embarrassment. She soon became joyful of the courage
Courage is a trait shared by Beowulf and King Arthur or “Wart”. Beowulf showed courage through the many battles he fought . Beowulf went to Heorot in hopes of defeating Grendel, the monster that had been attacking Herot for the last twelve years. This was courageous because he knew that he could be killed, but he fought anyway because that's what he needed to do. Wart showed courage when he pulled the sword out of the stone. He did not want to be King of England, let alone at such a young age. He wanted to put the sword back in the stone or let someone else become King. Wart was courageous and became King because he knew that was his duty. These examples show that courage
