Robert W. Krepps' short story "Pride of Seven" elucidate how there's different types of courage whether it's in a barbarian initiation or a valiant man; courage will acknowledge courage. The story begins when the Dutch narrator talks about living with the Masai family in South Africa, who believes that a boy needs to go through ceremonies such as killing a lion, and befriends a boy out of pity named En-gerr or The Sheep who has not killed a lion for he simply doesn't feel like it. The narrator invites En-gerr to see the 7 lions after mentioning him, but En-get finds his perfect lion to kill, a tawny beast named El Asfar, the Dutchman's favorite. After telling the tribe about his find The Sheep and tribe assemble for the hunt until En-gerr does the extraordinary by walking calmly until no more than 15 feet separated him for El Asfar as he casts his weapons down and holds grass in his right hand as a truce he makes peace with the lion and turns his back vulnerably walking away. …show more content…

A great example of how courage shall acknowledges courage is when The Sheep finally decides to tell the tribe of his changing mind to kill the lion. The narrator says "Now that En-Gerr had made up his mind, he was the hero of the hour...All the young Warriors were eager to go with him, act as the beaters. The elders were giving him last-minute advice, and the women were throwing grass and spitting at him to brinluck. (5)" Before En-gerr's new decision the tribe saw him barely better than a woman and the warriors and girls had scorned him, making fun of him for putting off his first kill. The tribe didn't think he had courage and didn't see him as a man until The Sheep changed his mind and then they were approving of him and went the extra mile to make sure they were there to help.
