Prejudice, as defined in psychology, involves holding a negative attitude towards the members of a group, based merely on their membership of that group. Any group can be the focus of prejudice. A person, who is prejudiced against a certain group, has a tendency to overlook the individual characteristics or behavior of members of the group to whom he/she is prejudiced, merely because they belong to that group. In the film ‘Remember the Titans’ (2000), prejudice is portrayed in several ways, but mainly focuses on the discrimination of the African-Americans. One form of prejudice, which if frequently revisited in the film, is racism. Racism occurs when prejudice and discrimination are directed at people who are members of a particular …show more content…
Equality of status refers to the groups having equal status in the contact situation, as perceived by members of the group(s) making the comparison.
Sustained contact occurs in the film during the six-week football training camp, that both the white and black team-members attended. Before leaving for the camp, Coach Boone splits the team into two groups- offense and defense. He then pairs up people in each group- a white person with a black person. He then tells them, “Get comfortable too, because the person that I have you sitting next to is the same one you’ll be rooming with for the duration of this camp.” He does this in hope of the team members getting to know each other for who they are, not by the colour of their skin.
Mutual interdependence is demonstrated by Coach Boone teaching the team to be dependent on each other, rather than competing with each other. By pushing everyone to their limits at the camp, the only option they had was to rely on each other for support.
One of the factors that successfully reduced the majority of prejudice within the team was superordinate goals. The goals set by Boone were made purposely unachievable by a single member. The only way for these goals to be achieved is the cooperation of the entire team. As he told the team, their game must be “a team effort in order to achieve perfection”
Near the end of this chapter, a young Wes Moore (the author) discovers a basketball court, meets a group of players, and joins their team after playing a few games. His teammates soon become his new friends, and that allows him to notice the strong resemblance between this team and a community. He notes that everyone in the team, himself included, is “enclosed by the same fence, bumping into one another, fighting, celebrating” (p. 45), showing that they all share the same experiences together. In addition, Wes Moore reveals the strong bond amongst him and his teammates when he states that they also share their personal secrets, including their “cruelty and crimes—as if that fence had created a circle of trust. A brotherhood” (p. 45).
Remember the Titans is a deeply impactful and motivation movie. Set during the 1970s when segregation and integration were hot topics, the film largely focuses on prejudice. One of the most impactful scenes from the movie when Gerry Bertier is laying in his hospital bed right after his life-altering car accident and the only person he wants to see is his newfound best friend Julius Campbell . At the beginning of the movie, both boys are very unwilling to get to know each other even the slightest bit considering the stressful time they were going through with a newly integrated school and team (Remember the Titans, 2001). They stereotyped the opposite race, or made generalizations about the characteristics of the other group (King, 2010, p. 402).
American History X is a great film that portrays prejudice, stereotyping and conformity. Prejudice is negative attitudes toward others based on their gender, religion, race, or membership in a particular group. Prejudice involves beliefs and emotions that can turn into hatred. Having an opinion or idea about a member of a group without really knowing that individual is a part of prejudice. Some people make judgments about a whole group of people without knowing very much about them. Sometimes people are afraid of those who seem different from them and unfortunately, they express that with name-calling and negative treatment. When people grow up with these ideas, sometimes it's hard to get rid of them. Like in the
Racism, stereotype, and prejudice are terms that have been around for centuries. These terms are often used out of context; however, each have their own distinct meanings, but all involve the devaluation of certain races. Racism is “a belief that race is the primary determination of human traits and capacities; and that racial differences produced an inherent superiority of a particular race”. Stereotype is “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image of a person”.1 Finally, the term prejudice refers to “a preconceived opinion not based on reason or actual experience”.1 Comprehension of these terms helps us light on the long and devastating history of racism in America.
For every team to work together and use teamwork is a major key, but first each person must put away their differences. That's one of the two lessons in this book. At the outset when Joe was contending for a spot in the freshman boat, there were “city boys dressed very well” and “farm boy,s like Joe who grew up wielding axes and fishing gaffs, etc.” As you observe that point right there, it’s a variety of backgrounds and that is what happens when a group of people come together. A
Many stereotypes come into play at this point in the movie. The coaches gather up all the players so they can go to training camp at Gettysburg College, while gathering the students on a bus, Boone makes the players sit next to each other. Neither one of the ethnic groups like this very much. Once they get to the camp, they get paired to room together. One of the
The film shows a great representation of many diversity topics which include age, sexual preferences and race. Age groups were represented by having high school aged students react to the race compared to the older demographic of the coaches and other older age members in the community. Sexual preferences were shown by an event in the movie when a student that transferred named Ronnie, makes a sexual move on a highly looked up to player; Gary Bertier while the team is in the locker room. With the so many different examples, this film goes to show the viewer that
As David’s original team falls apart, his effort of building another team has the potential to follow the same route and fall into similar obstacles that lead to the downfall of the original team if he doesn’t analyze deeper the circumstances and factors that lead to the failure. Although the potential team members are promising, there is no guarantee of a cohesive team not unless David invests more on his people to build a harmonious relationship between his subordinates. On the other hand, his initiative to persevere even if challenged with the task of starting all over again to rebuild the team is commendable.
Prejudice is when we have a preconceived opinion about someone or a group of people that is formed without knowledge, or even a real understanding about them.
To be a cohesive unit and a great team the Titans would have to learn to trust and respect each other. They would have to overcome their racial issues and differences. Coach Boone implements strategies in his attempt to bring the team together as a cohesive unit. These strategies include:
The conflict the teammates have will eventually help to shape their team and to work together.
It seemed impossible for these two players to become friends and forget about their racism. The closer they became the more they forgot about their differences and the more they defended their friendship. They were too determined to let their teammates hold them back.
In the movie Remember the Titans, the plot shows clear examples of race and ethnicity discrimination and Sexual orientation discrimination. One of the first scenes that show the issue of race and ethnicity discrimination is when the coach (Coach Boon) house is being vandalized by the “white players” when they throw rocks at his house. It is evident that the players don’t want the Coach or his Family in the neighborhood due to the colour of their skin. Another example is When Julius walks into the room and is completely ignored by a group of White girls when he says Hi to them, the nature of the movie suggests that if Julius has been of Lighter Skin, the girls would have reacted differently to him by saying Hi back. An example of Sexual Orientation discrimination in the movie is when they refer to a male player as Sunshine as he is homosexual, it is even more evident in the scene where the group of football players are uncomfortable around the character Ronnie as he is homosexual. The behaviours shown in the movie are learnt behaviours, the discrimination shown in the movie shows that white characters are acting on their judgment against the black characters with no substance behind their behaviours, and no real reason for them to be acting that way. It is clear that Discrimination is a
Racism, prejudice, compassion and love is what you get when you break down Remember the Titans. The movie deals with a high school football team that's been integrated and the team has to learn to deal with each other. This is true not just for the players but the coaches as well. They have to overcome huge obstacles dealing with racism and prejudice within the team, school and town.
Teamwork is an extraordinary characteristic for any organizations or groups to strive to its fullest potential. According to the Greenberg text “An organization is a structured social system consisting of groups and individuals working together to meet upon some agreed-upon objectives.” In the movie Miracle, the theme of teamwork is portrayed through the Men’s Hockey Team’s head coach Herb Brooks leadership in training recent college graduates to play hockey in one of the most challenging competition in the world, which were the 1980s Olympics.
