Practicum Evaluation Summary The practicum learning agreement created between the masters of Science in nursing (MSN) student and the instructor was approved for the goal to perform in the role of a nurse educator at the Domiciliary Rehabilitation Program at the Orlando Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). The population of the Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Program is veterans with multiple and severe medical conditions, mental illness, addiction, or psychosocial deficits. Military-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can negatively affect the veteran’s well-being (Health Services Administration, 2010). A final evaluation of the practicum learning used the Orlando VAMC evaluation form. The teaching program method was appropriate for learners. A detailed reflective analysis in the portfolio included results from a final meeting with the mentor, administration, mental health team, and educator. All favored the educational program to improve nursing standards of care for veterans with PTSD in the rehabilitation program. Encouragement to expand the teaching to nursing staff on all mental health departments and in the orientation program for newly hired nursing personnel was made by the mental health chief nurse. The outcome had few strength and weaknesses in which to learn from. The weaknesses are personal areas of improvement that can be enhanced with continued experience as an educator, optional training aids available at the VAMC and continued evaluations for improvement. Another weakness of the project was the small learning experience as compared to the nursing population at the VAMC. MSN Program Student Learning Outcomes A quality assessment process from up-to-date journal reviews can provide the decision-making for new interventions in patient care. Evidence-based decision-making requires the integration of the best available research evidence addressing specific clinical questions (Kranke, 2010). This educational needs assessment will cover the hospital I serve in. It is a full service, 139 bed community hospital located on a scenic campus in. The hospital staff pride ourselves on providing the highest quality care in all service areas. Our intense focus on customer service and patient safety has created a unique healing environment. In addition to our personalized care, we offer state-of-the-art technology and a medical staff consisting of the finest physicians in the area. All of the patient rooms are private and we provide free, convenient parking in a safe neighborhood. We have also achieved top scores from the Joint Commission and the State Department of Health and are accredited Chest Pain Center. The hospital is partially owned by physicians. Needs Assessment The nursing services provided at my hospital include a number of clinical services in areas such as bariatric care, cardiology, robotic surgery, the day hospital, pediatrics and a number of other areas. As mentioned above, the hospital is a full service institution that is well awarded and provides a lot of services. However, even in great institutions, things can be improved for the approximately 200 nurses employed on staff. From the research that this author has doen, the geatest gap in our hospital's educational needs (and possibly the most expensive is the lack of knowledge of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) amongst hospital staff nurses. Cook, Walser, Kane, and Woody (2006) did a study that had a goal of getting clinicians to accept Seeking Safety and evaluate its efficacy when treating veterans, in hopes of bridging the gap of parallel services at the VA to treat comorbid SUD-PTSD. This study reinforced the old ways of "cannot teach an old dog new tricks" because of how difficult it is to influence clinician behavior in routine medical care. A more passive approach was taken via a daylong interactive staff training in Seeking Safety, where clinicians were informally surveyed on their willingness to co-lead groups with the study. One article that was obtained through the Journal of Clinical Nursing described a study that was conducted in an outpatient hospital setting by the Department of Veterans Affairs in San Diego, California. The study was qualitative in nature and involved the use of a Mantram Repitition Program for the purpose of managing the symptoms of PTSD in veterans and evaluating its effectiveness. The participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups for comparison purposes: a Mantrum Repitition Program in addition to the usual PTSD care and a usual care group where Mantrum repetition was not offered. There were 71 participants in the MRP group and 75 in the UC group. The majority were male with ages ranging from 39 to 75. The focus was placed on the MRP participants. I will methodically analyze all parts of the study to assess the validity of the article, by contrasting and comparing the information provided, with previous literature. I will try to make sure that recommendations provided by the authors are congruous with nursing practice and beneficial to the advancement of it. I will as much as possible provide in depth detail of previous studies on the same topic that either support or contradict the analysis provided by this study and its authors.
The purpose of this practicum is to provide this nursing education student with the opportunity to participate in the teaching/evaluation of nurses at various educational levels in the hospital setting. This focused practicum involves course preparation, actual classroom teaching, evaluation methods (testing, conferencing), and participation in meetings. This practicum will provide this student with a variety of teaching strategies, knowledge, skills, and evaluative approaches designed to promote a productive and effective learning environment within the hospital setting.
