The “Other” vs Establishment
As a members of the “other,” children find power in liminal space and use this power to attack the establishment and attempt to overthrow it. In Munro’s “Sredni Vashtar,” Conradin uses the power of his imagination to create a god as a weapon. Conradian uses his god to give his guardian, who symbolizes the establishment, a toothache and then to kill her. In Ruben’s The Good son, Henry finds his power in the clubhouse and his mind uses this power to create weapons and mental strategies. A liminal space is a place between civilization and wilderness, with both the “other” and the establishment having power. As a shed is a liminal space, Conradin is not under control of his guardian so he is free to connect the power of “other”. As an act of creation, Conradin uses the power of naming to gives his ferret He uses red flowers and red berries as a symbol of sacrifice to give power to his god. Red berries and red flower represents the symbolic blood of sacrifice. These symbolic sacrifice show that Conradin is still connected to the establishment. Henry manipulates his mother by using her love of him as a child and takes her into the wood where he confesses about killing his brother and pretends to run away. Horrified by what her son become, she gives chase and arrives at the cliff. Henry shoves her mother over the edge and pick up a large rock with intends to throw down at her.The rock is yonic symbol representing the power of the “other”. However, Mark the member of the “other” defence the establishment by attacking on Henry with the aim of saving Susan. This give Susan enough time to climb back on the cliff. In the fight, both Henry and Mark rolled over the cliff and hold by Susan.Susan has power only to save one child. Henry try to manipulates his mother by saying “I love you, Mom”and want to kill Mark. Susan know how much Henry is harmful to her and her family. She let him go and save Mark. In other words, Henry have so much blood on his hand which does not give him chance to return to
