Poverty has been one of the biggest obstacles for Vermonters in the past and present. (http://www.spotlightonpoverty.org/map-detail.aspx?state=vermont). There are many factors underlying a high level of poverty in Vermont (and in varying degrees elsewhere), beginning with inflation and a high cost of living. Housing costs are high in Vermont, where home heating is expensive. And in some areas in Vermont there are mostly low salary manual labor jobs. While Vermont’s unemployment rate may be low, underemployment is a big factor in poverty. http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/money/2014/05/22/poverty-rate-tells-another-story-vermonts-economy/9381625/. Thus, Vermont has, for example, great dependency on school lunch programs and food stamps, as the Free Press article just cited shows. Many poor Vermonters fall into the category of “deep poverty”—living at less than 50 percent of the federal poverty line. https://www.google.com/search?q=poverty+in+Vermont&newwindow=1&client=gmail&rls=aso&authuser=0&ei=J0ceVtLZGsjo-QHD-ryYCg&start=10&sa=N&biw=1271&bih=639 Making matters even worse, there is often less spending on grade school education in rural areas in Vermont, which tends to lead to students being less prepared to compete for higher paying jobs, again leaving lower paying, often menial jobs. http://vtdigger.org/2014/01/13/report-finds-childhood-poverty-vermont-increased-25-percent-since-2007/. Childhood poverty remains a big problem. When children are poor, they often have greater health problems as adults than those with better nutrition as children. Their educational achievement is often worse than children who are not in poverty, leading deprived children to lower income jobs as adults. Kids growing up in poverty are at larger risk for lead poisoning.
The family poverty rate is 25.9% which is also greater than Baltimore City by over 10%. Lead poisoning is a factor in child health in Southern Park Heights, this relates to poverty rates because if families weren’t poor, they wouldn’t have cheap lead paint in their homes negatively affecting their child’s health. The poverty rate also affects birth outcomes, if they can afford it, they have the ability to receive prenatal care which provides healthier pregnancies and baby deliveries. If the poverty rates weren’t so high, the life expectancy of the neighborhood would be way older. If the people of this community could afford proper health care and could afford better quality food, the average life expectancy age in Southern Park Heights would be higher than 66.7 years
In 2004, a Texas man named Cameron Todd Willingham was executed for murdering his three young daughters by setting his house on fire. This conviction was based on faulty forensic science which assumed that the fire was caused by arson. There multiple fire science experts who reviewed the case and became opposed to Willingham’s execution stating there was no evidence to prove that the fire was intentionally set. In 2010, the Texas Forensic Science Commission released a report admitting that Willingham’s conviction was based on “flawed science”. One of the witnesses during the trial who was an inmate at the same prison as Willingham testified that Willingham confessed to the killing while in jail but later on recanted his statements. Willingham’s
If a child is living in poverty statistically they are more likely to to suffer ill health in later life and also be unemployed and turn to crime and substance abuse this will then cause their children to then suffer and the cycle continues.
Appalachian Poverty Poverty is a global problem, and it has existed from the beginning of civilization. Hunger, homelessness, and lack of health care are major aspects of this world-wide dilemma. Many countries are in complete poverty and a majority are third-world countries. Within the United States of America, a land of plenty, there are also pockets of extreme poverty. Governments around the world are trying to solve this huge problem.
* Poor housing- One of the side effects of poverty is poor housing. People on low income are often dependent on local authority housing. This may result in overcrowding, for example being housed in a bedsit or home with insufficient bedrooms. This means the child has no privacy, or personal space. They may struggle with homework and course work because of the lack of a quiet space in which to complete it. The housing provided may be of a poor quality – suffering damp or be in disrepair. This could have a detrimental effect on the child’s health – causing asthma or frequent colds and coughs. It will probably be in a less desirable area or could be in an area with social disorder problems. This may result in the children becoming isolated, as
The state of Mississippi is so poor that they are ranked last in there Per Capita Income a year. In the Mississippi Delta, some people mostly African Americans live in conditions nearing 3rd world poverty. Homes are ramshackle, food is scarce, and there is standing water and sewage in some places
Poverty is a common social issue that has troubled nations for thousands of years. While nations like the United States of America have worked diligently to eradicate it domestically, it still widely exists.“According to the U.S. Citizen burow 47.6 million citizens living in poverty. With 20% of those households living in extreme poverty.”(PBS.org)
The United States defines poverty for a family of four as being less than $16,036 per year, or $4,009 per person (Leone 12). People find themselves under this line for an innumerable amount of reasons. Some of these causes are under one's control and others are greater factors beyond an individual's power. Each family or individual person has unique and separate reasons for living in a state poverty. There is no way to try and define them all. Focusing in, three main topics arise that encompass the most predominant reasons for a person to fall into poverty. Education, family life and influence, along with the business cycle may work individually or together to cause poverty. These three leading
Some states lack opportunities to their citizens like education, health, jobs and other various forms of opportunities that characterizes such states as poor states. Though American refer to them selves as meddle class as discussed in the class, there are many below whose earnings are so little for the daily life and they are still bellow the poverty line. This did not sound reality to me when I first hard of poverty in America
In 1998, more than 13 million children (19 percent of all children) under age eighteen lived in families with incomes below the official poverty threshold. Although children age eighteen and under represent 26 percent of the United States population, they comprise nearly 40 percent of the poverty population. Despite a steady decrease from 1993 (23%) to 1999 (17%) in the rate of children in poverty, the United States still ranks highest in childhood poverty among all industrialized nations.
However, this system of measuring poverty is flawed because if a family makes a dollar more above the set limit, they do not qualify for financial help from the government (NCCP, 2008).The poverty threshold is an inadequate measure of whether people are considered poor or not. Current poverty measures are flawed because it assumes how much a family spends and does not accurately include family resources such as Earned Income Tax Credit (NCCP, 2008). The way that the government measures poverty is based on outdated information that was set in the 60s. Because it has not been sufficient to keep up with the standard of living, those who are living in “high cost cities like New York and those who live in rural areas of the country” (NCCP, 2008) are barely getting by.
To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell and The Flea by John Donne Two of the poems in Best Words are seduction poems, rather than love poems. Compare these two poems by analysing: - · Each poets intention · Form of the poem · Language used in the poem · Your reaction to the unromantic poems. ‘Let me not to the marriage of true minders/Admit impediments, love is not love’, is one of many famous love sonnets written by William Shakespeare.
Health is another issue that has been examined as a potential effect of living in poverty. A large amount of literature links low income to child health problems with studies showing that children in poverty are at a greater risk of infant, child and adolescent deaths (Children’s Defense Fund, 1994) along with malnutrition (Miller & Korenman, 1994) and numerous other health issues. These health issues can also be linked to the low quality living environment, as children in poverty are more likely to be exposed to toxins such as lead along with poorer air and water quality. These have been found to lead to cognitive deficits in children (Holgate, Samet, Koren, & Maynard, 1999).
The family and media are two institutions that influence one’s attitude of sexuality, and consequently sexual behaviors. Of importance is the discussion between parents and adolescents attitudes regarding sex. Interestingly, individuals begin to perceive themselves as sexual beings during the age of adolescence, yet little research has been done on sexual behavior in relation to identity formation (Chapman and Werner-Wilson, 2008). However, Chapman and Werner-Wilson found a low but significant negative correlation between parental influence and adolescent attitude regarding sex (2008). As parental influence and discussion regarding sex increased, adolescents' attitudes regarding sex became negative in tone, expressing less comfort
Poverty can lead to serious effects. Children who grow up in poverty are likely to have frequent health problems than the children who grow in better financial circumstances. For example, infants who are born into poverty have a low birth weight, and they grow up with mental or physical disabilities. Not only are they sick, but they are most likely to die before their first birthday. Children who are raised in poverty might miss school often because of their illnesses, and they have a much higher accident rate than the other children. Nearly a billion of the world’s population can’t read nor write. Poor families experience stress much more than a normal family does. They are more likely to be exposed to negative events such as illness, job loss, death of a family member, and depression. Homelessness is another effect of poverty. Homeless children are less likely to receive proper nutrition, protection and they experience more health problems. Around 1.4 million children die each year from lack of access to safe and clean water and proper nutrition. Homeless women experience a high rate of low birth weight infants as well as miscarriages. Families who do not have homes receive much more stress than other families. They also have disruption in school, work, friendships, and family relationships. There are other effects of poverty such as drug abuse and addiction, child and woman abuse, debts pressure, and increase in crimes.
