There have been many changes in the media’s influence on foreign policy and reception of events since the Cold War. News outlets are now more proactive in reporting stories and happenings due to improvements in technology. However, the media’s newfound proactively, political sway, and audience influence are not always used positively. While media is the first resource for informing the population, it also forces governments to act prematurely, manipulates audiences through selective reporting, and skews the representation and idea of certain groups. First of all, the media acts as a catalyst for swift, governmental action, such as in the case of foreign policies, through the manipulation of the public opinion. Post Cold-War, journalists were able to criticize foreign policy and incite the population to view some policies more critically or negatively. The journalists’ reporting angle and tone highlights certain aspects of policies that they want altered while avoiding to weigh the entirety of the law or change. One group the media is currently focusing on is refugees and the refugee crisis in Europe. The media portrays refugees as vulnerable individuals with little or no resources. The media portrayal of refugees persuades viewers that refugees are poor, incapable, and put pressure on society to support them. In reality, the status of refugee is a political and legal status with no connection to social class. However, media coverage of refugees has even changed the refugees’ idea of their place in society. For example, the global community and majority of refugees believe that refugees should not engage in any form of commerce in order to better their social situation (Malkki 381).
