Positive Reinforcement

Reinforcement is described in the textbook as, “The occurrence of a particular behavior followed by an immediate consequence” (Miltenberger, 2012, p. 67). The two types of reinforcement are positive and negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement occurs when the stimulus is introduced or increased, causing the behavior to intensify. Negative reinforcement means that the stimulus is removed or decreased, causing the behavior to intensify as well. In Exodus 15, Moses is leading the Israelites to the other side of the Red Sea so the people can begin a new life for themselves. God directed Moses to a tree which he casts into the water and it becomes sweet. God tested them saying, “If you will carefully obey the Lord your God, do what is right in His eyes, pay attention to His commands, and keep all His statutes, I will not inflict any illnesses on you that I inflicted on the Egyptians. For I am Yahweh who heals you” (Exodus 15:26, New International Version). If the Israelites promised to submit to God’s plan, then He promised He would not inflict sickness upon them. These people reach Elim, where there are an abundant amount of springs and proof that the Lord will take care of them (Allen, 2002). This Scripture can be used to explain positive reinforcement because God is rewarding the Israelites with water to drink because they were obedient to Him. This Scripture proves that no matter the obstacles we encounter, God can transform then and use them for good in our lives. He uses our obedience to Him to contribute to our mental, emotional, and spiritual health. God uses the bitter times to test His people and see if they will still be obedient to Him even in hard times. God can use the bitter things in our lives and turn them into something
