The child will continue with their behavioral challenges if they are not addressed in the appropriate manor. Not understanding the lagging skills that the child has and not helping them with new skills and tools to control their feelings, emotions and actions, the child will continue on that path and could even become worst over the years if it continues to be ignored.
The role of the school social worker is to listen to the issues that the children provides them with and trying to find solutions to their issues. The school social worker could provide them with different techniques to manage their thoughts, feelings, emotions, and actions. The school social worker could also create group activities with other children who have behavioral challenges. Through these group activities the children will be able to see that they are not alone, that there are other children who feel the same way as them, other children who might have the same structure at home, feel that they are not being listened too. According to Sugai, et al. (2000), saying that positive behavior support is “optimizing the capacity of schools to address schoolwide, classroom, and individual problem behavior is possible in the face of current challenges but only if working policies, structures, and routines emphasize the identification, adoption, and sustained use of research-validated practices” (p. 133). This relates with the Greene (2014) because if everyone in the school is not on the same track, they would not be able to assist and help the child with their behavioral challenges. School social workers also work to develop, enhance, or maintain a close working relationship between student families and the school, advocating for the family in a variety of situations,(Martin, 2014, pg. 278).
The duties of School social workers include meeting the needs during crisis situations. To have the knowledge of classroom management and behavior intervention. As well as assist teachers and school personnel in identifying difficult times during the day and developing a supportive plan to address issues. ( NASW ,2012) School social workers possess skills in developing behavior plans for individuals and groups who may need additional support through the crisis period and/or after. (NASW, 2012) School social workers are well informed regarding relevant resources in the community. (NASW, 2012) They can provide linkages to resources and referrals for students and families as well as teachers and administrators who may need more assistance during crisis. (NASW, 2012)

If a child does not understand his/her behavior or does not have control over it, it can cause fear in the child and break down confidence and self esteem. This can impact on other areas of life, such as the ability to complete tasks and schoolwork, to make friends and to deal with stress. This is why the early treatment is very useful.
The School Social Work branch is incredibly unique. The social workers often have dual responsibilities, helping as a social worker and as a therapist of sorts. School social workers are also the liaison, helping parents, the school board, and the administration work together and work better for the students. Schools are constantly changing and updating lessons, where the money goes, and school social workers are the ones to help the school board and administration be the best and decide what is best for the children.
I first read the article about positive behavioral supports. I gained an insight about the importance of knowing and observing the child. If we do not carefully do observation, we could misunderstand why a child is behaving a certain way. If we do not understand the why, then we cannot solve the problem. We need to know the purpose of the behavior so we can teach an alternate behavior that provides the same purpose as the undesired behavior. We as teachers can also lessen the amount of times a student is exposed to the trigger which causes the behavior. If we do all of these parts we can help a child overcome the negative behavior and replace it with a positive behavior. I am going to practice looking at what trigger’s Matthew’s bad behavior so that I can avoid those triggers. This will help me learn the process so I will be a more effective teacher when I have my own classroom.
Children that show behavioral problems have negative effects on themselves but have negative effects on anyone they are around, such as teachers and other children. Challenging behavior puts children for social and education failure now and later in the future. A child with behavioral problems can affect their cognitive and emotional development. Social work within the school system is an important and necessary asset to have. It helps many students with a severity of problems that children and adolescents face, whether it be at home or at the school itself. The role of the social worker is to establish a working relationship between the school and the family. In addition, they also help make sure that the child’s needs are met, whether it be their academic achievement, social, emotional and behavioural competence. By observing the child in its environment, they establish what needs that child might have and they figure out how they can utilize that perspective on the child to ensure that they perform to the best of their abilities academically or socially. We are looking at the different polices and job duties that a social worker faces while working in a school, whether it is a child with mental health related issues or a child with learning disabilities.
