The effects of Western Imperialism are significant in both positive and negative ways due to the everlasting conflict between the two countries. Imperialism is a country extending its power and its influence through the use of military force. An example of this was in Africa, where there was a great amount of racism when the Europeans colonized them, treating them as slaves and neglecting to give them basic needs for survival. The imperialists, when it came to China, were the British. Between China and Britain, there were two wars, the infamously called First and Second Opium Wars. The British wanted to do business with China after seeing the market potential because of the population, as well as the significant growth in population, which was 330 million people, over the past two centuries. The agricultural production in China was not able to keep up with the rapid increase in population. Despite this, in 1793, the Chinese emperor declared that he would not trade with outside barbarians for they already possess all things in prolific abundance. Western Imperialism had a great impact on the lives of the people of China and their sufferings will never be forgotten. Opium is a highly addictive drug which the British had been growing due to it being very profitable when put in the market. By 1832, China’s opium imports had become over 23,000 chests. Opium was illegal in China and was being smuggled in. The people of China were buying the opium from the British, using silver, which had kept China attracting much of the world’s silver supply for many centuries. This silver outflow caused many economic problems for China. China found itself with millions of addicts and decided to suppress the use of Opium. Thus, the First Opium war began in 1839, when the British were offended by the actions of the Chinese. The war ended in 1841 with the defeat of the Chinese and the Treaty of Nanjing, which opened five ports to European traders among many other restrictions. After the Second Opium War (1856-1858), more ports were opened as well as many more humiliations for the severely weakened Qing Dynasty.3 The Chinese were struggling to defend themselves during the Second Opium War due to internal pressure, mainly from the
